How 'bout an answer kind of in the middle? I'm a snowmobile/ watercraft tech by trade; we use starting fluid occasionally, but we always feel guilty afterwards. The problem with it is that it washes the lubricants off the cylinder walls and bottom end bearings, not a good thing. If your engine is not drawing fuel sufficiently while choked, I'd look for problems with pump diaghrams, dirt in the carb, or small leaks in the lines. So I'll waffle a bit and say occasional use is probably okay, every time is not.

You don't have to put enough in it to start a Farmall tractor. A split second shot with the piston at BDC will do it. Only fumes go into the lower end, if anything at all.

I am new to gassers and had much trouble getting my US41 to start at first. If your engine is brand new you will need an arm like Joe Montana to hand start it without a jumpstart or spring starter! Mine wouldn't even start with the spring at first. Needle settings are very critical, 1/16 or 1/8 turns are all that is needed. Set the needles at the manufacturers suggestion and beg or borrow a big starter to get it going and loosened up. After a few runs, spring starts and good strong hand slaps (with a glove!) will be possible. Starter fluid will only succeed in rapping your knuckles harder. Good Luck!

I have been known to use WD-40 as a starting fluid in both glow and gas engines, but don't tell anyone. I figure it's got a little lubricating quality to it too.

I would think you have checked to make sure you are getting the correct amount of spark to the plug at the right time.Spark, fuel, & air in the right amounts at the correct time is all it takes, very basic I would think. You have checked the mag for correct working?

I agree with diablo, WD-40 is the way to go. Use it in
chain saws, lawn mowers, any gas engine. It will not
wash down the cylinder wall, and as far as I can see
it works just as good as starting fluid.

John, if the G62 has a magneto( I am only familiar with 3W and Da) a local flier found out he had to "Slap" the prop to generate enough speed to get a spark.

He always wore a glove, positioned the prop just behind the firing point, then slapped the prop. Don't have to do this with engines with ignitions.

Might give that a try.

JohnVh, Don,t worry about using starting flud in your G-62. Almost all the starting fluids on the market now have lubrication in them. Never use starting fluid on a hot engine though. dmac

I helped a friend break in a G62 on a Giant Aeromaster. It was a bit cranky(pun intended) on the first two or three starts. We finally found that choking the thing real wet, would make it fire on the first or second flip. However there seems to be that fine line that you can cross, and flood the engine. When that happens let her set and dry out awhile. When you continue to flip a flooded engine all you accomplish is building arms like Arnold Shwartznegger. Seems like this is a great running engine, once it is broke in though.
