RE: 1/3 FOKKER DVIII Scratch Build
I finally finished the stab and elevators last night. Your pics were a very big help. I'm trying to stay with the original plan with a few exceptions. I laminated the rudder and elevator ends because I've never done that before and it was definitely a learning experience! [&:] The last thing I did before closing the shop for the night was to frame up the left wing panel. I have a short kit cut by A&M Models. I informed Alex that I was going to make the wing two-piece and he cut the wing tube holes for me and made all the spars SOLID so I don't have to use any webbing. Once I get it all together I 'll post a pic or two. And by the way, how much gas you need to build me a set of landing gear? Keep up the great work!

rcnats, be nice to see when you post the pictures up, as for landing gears by the time I get the gas, flux, brass, 3/16" music wire it would be easy $75, than once it is assembled it would have to go in a big box plus shipping, so it is something to think about, not like if you were near buy you could drop the stuff off and pick it up.

Ok here are some pics. My work is no where near your craftsmanship but that's ok right? The first pic is of the wing showing the solid spars. The next one is a closeup showing that the front spar is two pieces of lite ply that I laminated (starting enjoy this ) to make one piece. This way I don't have to add any webbing between the ribs.

I proudly present my version of the stab, elevators, and rudder. Like I said earlier I trying to follow the plan as much as possible. I like the way you did the control horns for the elevators. I'm going to use cables like on the original and use a dummy setup for the ailerons. Now if I can just remember to take the wax paper from the cabinent to my work shop I can start gluing the ribs in place .

Thanks. I really appreciate your comments. I work from 8:00 -5:00 M-F and try to get it a couple of hours in the evenings. My work shop heater has been working overtime!. Once the wings are framed I'll move on to the fuselage. Your pics are once again a very big help. From now on I'll try to match your skill .

What a great build job. I only hope my D.VIII's come out near as good.
I actually have three different sized D.VIII's, one from CTDesigns in Germany, a 1/6th scale, two from Balsa USA, the 1/4 scale and this big boy here... I very much like the design of the flying razor!

WATCHOUT - if you are using Ron Weiss DVIII plans, I bent all my wing strutt 5/32" wire using his front view as a guide, what a mistake!!
He shows 15-1/2" from fuselage centerline to the mounting strap at the end of the strut, I intalled my wing strut mounting tee nuts in the wing as indicated on the wing plan at 13-1/4" from the wing center, the mistake is that the struts I bent are all 2-1/4" to long because the spread on the mounting strut is not 31" as shown on front view but rather 26-1/2" if you follow his wing plan, so the builder is on his own to work out the discreptancies on this issue.

WOW!!!! Too bad you had to find this out the hard way [:@]. Thanks for letting us know. Sounds like you now have to do some serious realignment to the struts and the wing. I wonder if anyone else who has built this plane (per plan) run into this problem?

I have the struts re-made and mounted, if I were to do it again I would have glued a groved wood rail across the top width of the fuselage for the struts to fit into, as it is you can see that I installed wood blocks for the strut end to go into, what a disaster it would be if the sides were lite ply with a hole drilled for the struts, how long would that last in the air?.

Great recovery!!!! I think I might do as you mentioned about the groove. It sounds like what I did with the Nosen Gere Sport. I now have three projects on three seperate building boards. I think M-W-F will be for the DVIII, T-T for my Ultra Hots, and Sat for my Parkinson "Barracuda" DF. With all this fun how can I have a boring week? Keep up the awesome work!

That is what BUSA does. They have the light ply fuse sides, but the builder glues a block of hardwood that is well supported from the rear and is big enough to handle the load. And thats only for the minor struts. The major struts have blocks that run the width of the entire fuse.

Normaly I do the same, that is run a grove block across the width on top, the plan has the struts going through holes on the side, another draw back is the first top front strut is hampered by the rounded sheeting getting in the way of the strut, which is not the scale location.. I am not impressed with this set of plans at all !!, the first build you always find the weak spots, any way with all the mistakes in the plan I am working around it so I do end up with a real nice looking airplane in spite of it.
BUSA plans though not intricate is by far much better plans to work with.

Hrm... I just took out my plans and had a good look at them.
You are right. They are very off scale. I'm wondering if I should even bother, and just build the BUSA Razors and give this one a skip... thats a lot of work I just don't feel like fixing.

Merlin - call a spade a spade, the plans are crap!!, I am to far into it to turn back, I would be in trouble with these plans if I did not know how to build, I would of been much bettter to enlarge BUSA 1/4 scale plans, Only reason I went with Weiss is some air heads or plants posted how great it was, I won't get sucked in on this kind of build for myself again.

Merlin - What a bummer, maybe you well feel up to building the cut kit latter. As for me I am going to set the plan aside from here on and use my documentation to kick everything into place. I have decided to go with a simpler paint scheme to get this thing completed soon. I have applied 21st century white pre colored fabric for the tail, added some rib stitch details and painted the black stripes with rustoleum black spray paint.
