Hello, I am getting ready to start building a Tiger2,and am looking for some input on what to expect. This is my first kit, and I am in no hurry, as I still have my trainer to fly. I am going to put an OS 61fx, and JR components in it. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Loren

Hello, Vegas Mossie

I've built 3 Tiger 2, and I can tell you that is a very nice plane. The wood is not the same quality of SIG kits, some warps, be careful sanding all the ply parts, the die cutting is of poor quality. The plans and instruction manual are very good. The flying characteristics are outstanding, and is easier to land than your trainer, you will develop many new skills wit it.

Regards.

I just built a Tiger2, and I thought it was a great kit. In my case, the wood quality was excellent, and the cutting was very good. I thought I might have been spoiled because my previous kit was laser cut, but the die cutting of the Tiger2 was fine.

If I had to do it over, I might have used two aileron servos. This is partly because I must have gotten a drop of glue or something where I shouldn't have, so my aileron torque rods are quite stiff, but torque rods are basically a pain.

I tried to use the supplied nylon hinges, couldn't find anything to glue them easily, finally threw them out and went with CA hinges.

I have an O.S. .46 FX on the front of mine, and had to use a few ounces of lead in the nose, so you might be perfect with the bigger engine. You'll need to find a way to supply more ground clearance for the bigger prop, though.

If I had to do it over, I think I would have upgraded the push rods for the tail surfaces. For the throttle and nose wheel, the supplied stuff is fine, but I wasn't too happy with the amount of friction to the rear. The instructions for installing the control rods is non-existant, which really annoyed me. The servos mount pretty close to the rear end of the access area, so I couldn't find any way to secure the front end of the rear push rods. Anyway, it's something to think about before you get the covering on (unlike the way I did it). If this is your first kit, I would take the time to install all the servos and control surfaces before covering anything. This is a bit difficult with the Tiger, because you don't glue the tail surfaces on until after covering them, but you can use some screws to fit everything together. It's time consuming, because you have to take everything apart to cover it, but I think it will be worth it, since it's so hard to change things once the covering is on.

I wasn't too happy with the fuel tank platform. It appears really clever, the way it snaps in, but when I snapped mine in, it tore the Monokote on the side, which wasn't too cool. You might want to just glue little balsa rails on the inside of the fuel compartment.

The hockey stick patterns on the plane were the hardest trim design I've ever done, but was worth it in the end. The plane looks great at 5 feet away. I was hoping it would look better closer, but I guess I've still got a lot to learn about covering.

I've only flown the plane once, and it was really really windy, so I didn't do much more than circle around and land, but the plane seemed very easy to fly, even at full throws. It's really a very good looking plane as well.

I built a Tiger 2 three years ago, and I thought it was a good quality kit. It too was my first kit. It went together real well. I thought the parts were of excelent quality. The model flew real well. This is a perfect second plane.

Unfortunatly I got cocky, and tried to do something beyond my capabilities, for the level I was at. After raking up the parts, I took them home in a garbage bag . I was flying out at the site by Lake Mead, at Hemenway Point.

Good Luck with yours, it will be a fun flyer.

You'll really like the Tiger 2. I have one that is over 6 years old. I'm going on my second engine, an OS 50SX. The 61FX should provide outstanding power, however, the 46FX may provide all the power you need if this is your second plane.
I had aileron flutter with mine (torque rods not strong enough). Strongly advise mounting servos in each wing. You'll get much better response and it's easier to do when you're building.
Beef up the stab by adding 1/16" balsa gussets between the framework. A friend had it collapse on his while holding during runup.
Have fun!

Thank you for the replys, I really like all the tips. But, it turns out that the kit is a Tiger 60, not a Tiger 2.

rickfly52, how do you get out to the site by the lake? I looked for it once, but no luck. I will be at the Silver Bowl tommorrow, w/ my trainer. My neighbor does have a Tiger 2, and he echos the sentiment of the rest of you, he loves it. (although, he has a 61fx in it) It really moves. He loves to do low, fast passes over the runway. Anyway, thanks again for the tips. Loren
