I'm breaking in a new YS63FZ.

The engine will start right up for the first time. However, after the first run its a little more difficult to start and after its started it stops when I remove the glow battery.

I took the plug (OS F plug) off and its full of fuel. When I connect the battery it takes a second or two to burn off the fuel and start glowing red.

Is this an indication of a bad plug, my first thought, or I'm running this engine too rich? I have the low end backed out one turn and the high end open 1.5 turns. The pump adjustment is flush with the case.

The engine is mounted sideways on a profile plane.

This is my first YS so I'm learning.

Sounds like it's way too rich on the low end....

Too rich, or too much pressure.

Lean the low end or turn the regulator screw in 1/2 turn.

It is very common for an engine to die when doing the breakin when the glowplug is removed. This is caused by the engine being very rich probably on the bottom end. This is not a bad thing though. You want to run this engine rich till it has time to seat the ring properly. I recommend following the instructions that came with the engine. You will probably have problems starting this engine till you learn the starting procedure for a YS engine. With the glowplug not attached flip the engine over 10 times with the throttle closed completely to pressurize the tank. The repeat the same procedure except with the throttle open fully. This feeds the fuel to the engine. Now set the throttle to the idle position, attach the glow plug heater and start the engine. You might have to give a little throttle to get the engine started but never more than 1/4 throttle. Good luck.

Yep, way too rich on the low end and probably too rich on the high end also. This is perfectly fine for breaking in a new YS. No need to worry.

As already stated -- it's too rich! The last 63 that I tuned for a friend was 2 or 3 turns rich on the low end! He was so angry with that engine that he was about the send it back. Pinch the fuel line at idle and see if it smooths out. I did this until I got I got the low end close and it made a HUGE difference!

Thanks fellas. I thought it was a bit rich. I'll get it taken care of tomorrow.

I took the plane to the field yesterday and messed with the engine for a while (even had a help from an experienced ys guy).

We didn't have much luck.

This morning I took the engine off the plane and put it on the stand.

Its running pretty well now but the needle settings have me confused. But this may be normal for a YS.

High Speed Needle: 1 turn open

Low Speed Needle: 6 turns open.

When I ran the engine on the stand I kept leaning the low end until the muffler quit spitting fuel. I still have lots of smoke coming out so I guess there is plenty of fuel/oil going through the engine.

Do these settings sound normal? By the way I'm running a 13x4 prop for testing.

I'm running a second tank through the engine as I type this. The above settings must have fixed my problem.

The engine transitions very well and runs perfectly when the throttle is wide open.

That's a lot of turns out on the low speed, does it speed up after you pull it down to 2,000 rpm, if so the low end is too lean, my .53 FZ and .91 FZ are both about 1.5 turns out on the low end.

Rich,

Quick question: Is your regulator screw flush with the housing?
If your low end needle is out six turns tells me that your regulator screw is out too much. Also the low end needle works in the opposite direction than most engine. CCW is leaning and CW is richening. So I am assuming that your low end is very lean to compensate for regulator screw being too rich. I hope this makes sense.
