The Twin Otter is a rugged 2 engine prop aircraft by the company De Havilland
was constructed. The machine is in all regions of the world at home from the tropics to the
Arctic Circle, the pilots appreciate their reliability and good handling qualities. Hangar 9 has
this aircraft in the military version with attention to detail incorporated into the model. Whether
Electrical or Verbrennerantrieb, the Twin Otter is prepared for both. Big Flaps
allow vorbilgetreue approaches.

Status: offline 		This plane has made it on my 'Must Have List'; the manual shows using Evolution 36 2 Strokes, I wonder what 4 strokes would fit and work on this plane without having a bunch of engine protruding out the cowls, like the Rocker Arms/Valves; although the RCV 58CD without any Rocker Arms/Valves may work, about the same size as a 40 size 2 Stroke and without a big Muffler common on 2 Strokes.

Any problems with battery fit within the nacelle, or with CG problems when using 4S 3500mah cells ?

I have already purchased a set of EFlite Power 32's and Eflite 60amp ESC's. I was planning on using this combo in a Dueces Wild. Plus, the cost of the Dueces Wild was dropped down to $159.99.

But, then I accidently came across this thread. Wow.....what a nice looking aircraft.......plus it's scale and it's big !

If I can use this power package, I'll be pre-ordering today !

No issuews with the CG or battery size you mentioned in the nacelles.

I pre-ordered mine last week. Should be here by late March.

Has anybody else taken the plunge for this UV-18 Twin Otter ? It looks like a nice version.

I still haven't made up my mind about power..........electric or glow ?

Mine arrived last Thursday. Most of the hobby shops should have one in stock by now.

Had a lot of fun taking all of the parts out of the box. Wow.....what a nice looking aircraft ! I had been tossing around the idea of using a pair of Saito .56 4-strokes, but then decided she's going to be electric powered.

It's going to take me awhile to put this one together as I'm planning on fabricating parts and adding a lot of extra scale details.

Spent time this afternoon poking a bunch of holes through her for the exterior lighting system. I counted 7 exterior lights from pictures I found on the internet of the real Twin Otter that Hanger 9 used as a model.

I thought something looked missing on the front of the model, so I've decided to attempt to make up a set of windshield wipers blades and linkage. This could be a challenge.

At first, I must mentionned that I am pleased that a company finally introduced probably the best entry-level, scale like, multi-engine .

With regards to the powerplants, a pair of Saito FA-40 with the Evolution 3-bladed props would give you a reliable, smooth and quiet airplane.

A few years ago, when I was contemplating getting into multi-engine, I decided to scratch built a 6' wingspan DH Twin Otter to be powered by a pair of Saito FA-40/Evolution 3-bladed props.

At a weight of 8 pounds, it's been a joy to fly so far after 275 flights. I've also used the same pair of engines in a Aerotech DH Mosquito. [6' wingspan & 9.5 lbs] in which I've logged just over 100 flights.

About a mounth ago, I bought another new pair of Saito FA-40 as they've been 100% reliable so far.

The only inconvenience that I've found is if you plan to install them inverted; the carb is not reversible. To avoid having the engines protruding and to keep the look of the streamlined nacelles , I had to installed them inverted in my twin. On the other hand, I had to rework the engine mount because the fuel tank was interfering with the installation of the control cable as I had not much room to set the R-6 fuel tanks .

This new kit from Horizon Hobby is incorporating a lot of neat and practical features that modellers will appreciate, i.e: Quick release radome, rugged landing gear, simple and efficient flaps systems, 2 piece wings, etc.

Maybe there's another thread about the Otter here at RCU, but I sure can't find it.

Status: offline 		Mine is 95% and should be maiden flight this Sunday. Went electric with two Turnigy 50x45 890kv with 12x8 APC props and Turnigy Kforce 80amp ESC and Rhino 4900 4s batts. She came in at 13 pounds and balances surprisingly rearward, this was totaly unexpected as the motors and batteries are ALOT bigger than speced. Time will tell if it a bit too much or an ok flier.

"Too much or an OK flier ?"

From some of the reports I've read, it flies like a big trainer.

I'm scaling mine out, so it won't be ready to fly for a while. So far I've got about 75 hours into it.

Give this a few hours for youtube to get it done and it is the first full power run up of my Otter. It will be able to hover...


Opened up this so the speed control could be placed beneath the battery tray so it had good air flow.



The battery box is very full.

Glad to hear you like the way it flies !

So...........you overpower your stuff too ? So do I. As I always say, you can NEVER have too much power............hey, if it's too fast you can always throttle it down.

Yeah, I hear Ya. I originally had planned on the 4-strokes for mine, but then decided on using the EFlite Power 32's. EFlite made installing their recommended Power 25's fairly easy to install. Installing the more powerful Power 32's in mine took some effort.

As far as flying time ? I can't help you out there........mine's still under construction. I'm attempting to scale mine out so it looks like the Otter in the picture.
