I was thinking of buying the Great Planes lancair with 80" wingspan but realized that the wing is one piece. Why dont they make such large wings as two piece so that they can be transported easily. How do you guys carry 80" wings in your sedan?

It is lighter and simpler to do it in one piece.

I stuck my 76" Sukhoi in my 94 Toyota Tercel without rear folding seats.

It can be done with enough perseverence!

EUQOR has the rite answer except that he's missing
only one word..............CHEAPER !! ...and that's what ARF'S
are..........CHEAP. ARF might mean "all ready to fix"

As far as transportation, up till 2 years ago I always had
9 passenger wagons......now it's a long bed Ford Ranger
with a cap.

Roby

why not modify the wings too be able to transport the wings in 2 halves?

PLan the job out correctly and i bet that you could do it fairly easily and save money on buying a trailer/ bigger car

just my 1.5 pence

falconwings, in my experience i have come across many wings that are transported in 2 halves. Virtually all the time the wings will be of same strength whether they be in 1 piece or 2.

I have converted a wing into a 2 half wing before and was told to make sure it can withstand the same stress as the whole wing as it was. I got out some weights and stressed the thing to its critical edge, same results after having the wings as 2 halves.

As i said, providing you do a good plan of it, 2 wing halves can be made effectivley and strongly out of the full wingspan wing.

One of the reasons that the Lancair is a one piece wing is because there needs to be an opening in the bottom of the fuse (wing mounting area) to install all the R/C gear. There are no hatches for access on the plane, nor does the cabin roof come off for access (like TF Bonanza). The only access to the models interior is through that opening. I am sure that plugin wings could be developed for this plane, but alteration would have to take place elsewhere also.

Just one guys opinion.

VTOL,

you are right, I did modify in two projects: a Giant Stick (Quadra 42 power) and on my BIG HOTS (Zenoah G62).

But for sure you add some ounces to the project.
