Mmmmm, landing R/C no a carrier; would a 40 foot hull do it? What a hell of a project. I'l be satisfies with something about six feet long. I saw a twelve foot Destroyer for sale that I'd buy, but the shipping to Bermuda would be through te roof...................more dreaming CKS

Just for practice, next time the flyers in the bunch go to the field draw out a deck with chalk or flower or something about 10 foot wide by 50 foot long and try and land and takeoff in that space. It's a lot easier sounding than it is but great fun. Also good way to shape up your flying skills.

Well we pretty much have that in hand at the moment. We have ten acres of hard surface to fly from and the run-ways are all macked out. It's a great way to practice cross-wind landings; doing a carrier 'deck' on a run way whould be cool. CKS

I sometimes fly off a abandoned concrete access road that is 300' long and 12' wide, with a 10' deep drainage ditch on each side, and there is always a cross-wind.

We use this field on days that we feel the need for a challenge. Kind of like a carrier landing because the choices are soo limited.

And when the drainage ditch is full, you really go into the "drink".

Hi Guys, since life itself is a challenge, i don't need it when I fly, I progress at my own pace.
I don't know about a catapult........an arresting hook would be OK. I'm gonna' talk to the club about doing something like that. The pilots will have to be kinda' elevated to be able to see the 'deck'........it's not control line. CKS

I think it would be even cooler to have an assault ship
this way I could part a hover or some other cool amphibs and also land a helo

What I'm going to be doing on sunday might be a good test of how arresting gear works with rc airplanes. Im going to have a thick strink attached to two disc-brake pads (12lbs each) whick are going to be on two different sides of the runway widhth wise and the line taut in between them, supported by two 5-invh redwood stakes which are pounded into the ground. When a plane lands, the line will slide off these stakes. The airplanes is going to be a pbf (it has two advantages for this kind of experiment: strong and Cheap) with the tailskid bent forward so it would work like a tailhook . I will send some pictures (if I don't forget) of how it looks like.

Hi, yeah that seem like a good idea. We have ten acres of concrete to fly from so setting that up should be a breeze. Lemmy know how it turns out. CKS

I have been doing much on my project lately, but I have restarted it now. I will use chain instead of brake pads, so the farther the airplane goes, the more weight its pulling, so it stops gently. I have also designed a retracrtable tailhook/tailskid, which would be retraced on the ground, so it would be a tailskid and would be vertical in the air, to catch the wire, and would be powered by gravity or a small spring.

sorry i meant for when your landing over water
if you just let the hook fall on its own weight theirs the chance it will wip up as you try to grab the cable and miss if your not carfull you end up a sub

id put foam in the planes you plan on doing this with untill ythe landing part is well proven

Nah, I'm using a PBF, so cheap and easy to build, if it goes down, I'll build another one
I just need to get the servos and the engine inflatable rafts.
