Casey,

excellent work on the exhaust stacks. Reg. power the OS 1.60 would be the best choice for size and power. The Moki 1.80 is too much and will stick out. ELectric power is definetly a possibility, there are a couple of other guys building this 109 with outrunners and sound systems.

Thank you Jose,

You're giving me some very nice stuff to start with, you make it hard to mess it up too bad lol....

I do like that rust paint though....

so do you know what those other gents were using for power by chance? I do believe that I'm going to beg these guys to help point me in the right direction for electric, as they seem quite informed on the subject! That way I don't have to mess up the beautiful work you've done.

Also, as you have flown this plane, what do you think of the use of a gyro on the rudder? Do you think this would help with ground handling and take offs?

Casey

So so far I've decided to start with the Eflight Power 160 for a motor. I'll decide on the ESC, and lipo's shortly though. I want the biggest lipo's within reason for max flight times, keeping in mind weight at the same time somehow.

on power 160 you want to look for 6s paired up for 12s to take adavantage of full speed and power. For flight time a pair of 5000 mah packs ought to get you close to ten minute flights.

this is what I was thinking of going with, running 2 in series...

ZIPPY Flightmax 5800mAh 6S1P 30C

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9935&Product_Name=ZIPPY_Flightmax_5800mAh_6S1P_30C
and going direct with a NiCad 6 volt to rx/servo's
that should be a good start and give me plenty o flight time I would hope.

I believe the e-flite 160 is the right choice for you, but, please keep in mind, E-flite states the voltage range is UP to 10s.
I have had a friend run one on 12s, but he also had the throttle limited via the radio to 75%.
I am sure there are several ppl that have run the power 160 on 12s, I just wanted you to be aware that the specs say 9s-10s:

I have flown the 109 off both gas and electric I really think that the electric power has tamed the 109 for me, especially on take off.
The 109 you just have to fly it to the ground and not try to 3 point it. I found if you fair it for a 3 point landing you are bouncing it down the runway... It is not a crosswind airplane either. It can be flown in a crosswind but you are at a disadvantage with the gear setup. MHO

I would spend the money and get the Castle Creations 85 HV for the 160. They have good customer service and I have not had one fail on me....

Thanks Ty, I appreciate the input!

You know I think your right on the landings too. Funny thing is that as I understand it, on the full scale a 3 point landing was actually how they were taught to land it. No wonder so many were lost or damage on the ground.

Casey

I have seen the 79" span Platt 109G6 @24lbs fly with an OS 108. In fact I have an unfinished Platt plug I started, then stopped working on it when CMP put out the 71" span one. CMP has a 108 in it @ 12lbs with retracts. I just got an Evolution 120 stroke that will be put in my other CMP 109 that I am bashing the @#*!! out of.

What I am going to do for the CMP with the 120 in it, is the same thing that I have done in my 48" span 109. Put an alum extension shaft on it.

In my 48" span 109F, the engine sits in the oil cooler and is not exposed at all. I post a pic later.

I don't thing I will get the CMP engine into the oil cooler, but it may be far enough back to keep most of it in.

Draw back is, you have an extension on your engines crankshaft, more chance of bent crank on nose over. On the small 109, engine mount is designed to break away instead of damage the engine. It has worked twice already. The question I will answer shortly is " will the extension shaft work in the larger model as well"?

48"span 109F/G

Excuse the untidy engine compartment. Its the test model.

Currently flies perfect. The extra mass on the crankshaft did give us a few surprise benefits. The engine idles smoothly and forever. And more importantly on a 109, the engine revs up slower, smoother and makes the pull to the left easier to control.

The batteries are fine and are what I have had for the last year. But, I also have some 25c and 30c batteries that provide better punch for not a lot more money. I think the 30c zippy flightmax 5000's are $51 or close to that. But...the 20c will work well in anycase.
The gyro will work just fine
That esc is not useable in an airplane. Its water cooled for use on a boat. It needs incoming water which is picked up by a tube outside the backend of the transum just above the motor. It is then expelled out the side of the boat hull. At least thats how its setup in the v-hull boat I have.

The CC 85HV is a good esc for sure. I use a turnigy sentilion 5-12s 100amp esc for more head room, but then again, Im not using Castle esc's on the 10s setups cuz of cost. The CC 85hv should be fine right up to the max amp rating while some less expensive esc's should not be pushed to the absolute max rating to keep them happy. The setups ive used usually draws about 68-75 amps full throttle with one setup running 91amps.
The good part about using CC esc is support. If it blows for some odd reason, ive seen castle replace them.

I'd take it!

looks good and I have to say that this is going along my first thought process. Moving the motor back to allow the head to hide like yours and using a prop extension.

still like the idea...

Yep...those are the exact ones im using. Good thing too is that can be used for 12s applications so if you ever got this motor you could use the same esc:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5139&Product_Name=Turnigy_80-100-A_180Kv_Brushless_Outrunner_(eq:_70-55)

Its a 7000watt max motor. Yup 7000. Basically a 60-80cc gas motor equivalent. But...lol..to get to 7000watts, youd probably need a 200 amp esc

Reg Electric power I will have to find out for you. Reg, Gyro: I think it can really help on the take off run, I'm not sure how it would work for flying. Like Ty said, the 109 doesn't like Xwinds. I found taking off and landing in grass helps a lot.

I believe I will set up the gyro on the rudder and assign it to a switch as told to me prior in this thread. That way I can turn it off for flight. I do know that some guys do fly with the gyro, but then again, I'm sure they are well versed in setting them up.

Casey,
You should consider this with the tail wheel. I have not had a torque problem with the electric 109 but i did with gas. Think about putting your tail wheel on a seperate servo and channel. This way you can slave the tail wheel to the rudder. Then when you taxi the plane out and get it straight down the runway, you turn off the tail wheel. This allows you to use full rudder eithr way without effecting the direction of the tail with the tailwheel. The biggest problem is trying to use rudder with the tail wheel on the ground. You end up over correcting. This is fixed with the tailwheel on a different channel....

Thank you very much for running that by me. I had read about doing this awhile ago in a top flight P-40, (another gem on the ground lol) and to be honest had forgotten about this. I think that its a smart thing to do for the 109...lets face it, everyone agrees this plane is no fun on the ground, so whatever you can do to improve it, is a good thing I think.

I will plan on this in the build.

I really need to sit down a do abit of planning lol

Casey

Thanks again Ty and Jose for the input

this plane deserves a good set up.
