Ok...

so I'm quite excited about building Jose's 80" ME 109F "Fritz". At this point I'm still alittle undecided on the scheme that I will finally choose, but I'll show the few that I've narrowed it down too, and perhaps with all of you're help, I can make a choice.

here are a few shots of Jose's 109...

Hope you'll all follow along, and all of you 109 guys...don't hesitate to jump in with any and all of those tips you've learned...

Here are a few of the schemes that I've been thinking of doing...I live in the northern California Valley and I'm surrounded by mountains, so I want to choose something that will show well in flight here...dunno yet.

couldn't wait to start something so I cleaned up all of my resin parts and went to work on the exhaust stacks. I used a method of "salting" the piece in between coats of paint to achive the look of rusting. I don't think it turned out too bad...

I first used red oxide primer, then used a fine paint brush to wet the stacks, grabbed a pinch of salt and let 'er fly. This gave me a rather random covering of salt on the stacks.

Next was a light coat of flat black....

then after waiting as long as I could stand, I used and old tooth brush to rub off all of the salt....

all in all, it turned out rather random, lighter in some area's, heavy in others. But for the most part, I'm happy with it.

thank you Zero...I must admit, although I've known of this method for a while now, this is the first time I've had the pleasure of having a plane large enough to go "scale crazy" on.

I actually was inspired by TomCrump in the RE: for that 'in service' look thread on how he did his stacks...I had completely forgotten about using the method until seeing his stacks he posted in that thead...(an excellect thead I might add, lots to learn there.)

I'm glad that I refreshed your memory. I picked up the "salt trick" idea from a plastic modeling website.

I'm especially glad that you used it on a Luftwaffe subject. We gota keep LW birds in the air !

Well now, I've got Scale Retractable Landing Gear, Oleos & Air Kit(Sierra Giant Scale) all comming from from Jose, as well as the Scale Wheels with aluminum hubs. I plan on making my own scale retract for the tail, as nothing is offered.
I also plan to do the Working Slats and Flaps with scale deployment.
I'm still undecided as far as the powerplant goes...I would love to go with a gasser, but I really want to keep this bird as light as possible. Dunno.

Looking good Casey!

I did the salt thing on my 102" Meister-Scale BF-109 stacks. It's a great technique.

Hi

I'm a really big fan of the "F/G" versions.

Your method for the headers looks good. On my urethane headers I made, I used a stiff brush and stippled my base coat as it dried to give it a more cast iron look. Then a bit of fine rust look with paint and chalks.

Also, I made an experimental 3 blade adjustable pitch, scale flying prop that as of yet has not been perfected. Need more power and blade "airfoil" modification. Made a mold for static urethane blades at this point with these. Made a composite spinner as well.

And our little 48" span composite "F". A challenge to take off, but really flies nice and fast with an OS VF .46

Will check in regularly to see how its going.

Steve

well to be honest, I've been looking at mine and although they have a randomness, they dont have the "blend" I was looking for. Actually the look you achived was more of what I was going for....so

I have alittle time today, I think I'll go for Version 2.0 lol

Steve,

Nice work there on your 109, and good to see ya. I know you have plenty of experience with composites, so anything you have to add would be great.

Ya the take off's the only thing I'm really concerned with at the moment....

Casey

off to redo the stacks....

I just really looked at all of the balsa and ply-formers, all laser cut. I must say that its the best I've ever seen! Everything cut nice and crisp, and every part laser etched with the part number. Very nice indeed!

I must say that everything I've recieved so far for the 109 has been "top shelf" stuff thru and thru....Jose has really put together a great package for the modeler as far as I can see.

I have only started on the "extra's" ie. cockpit kit, bomb plylons, static prop. Jeff is currently finishing up my wing, and the fuse is ready to ship. I can tell you this much, he is a great guy to work with, and I think one can't go wrong with his Jug. So I guess the short answer is no, I have not started it as of yet. I plan on a detailed thread on that build too.

David,

I must say, those stacks look increadible....so good I had to redo mine thanks .....

I wasn't happy at all with how mine looked after seeing yours, my colors were not right and way too much black...so I repainted with testors "rust" and I'll try again with the salt today....how did you get such a nice stipple pattern?

Casey

I know its all in how i lay in the salt.....

Casey,

Go with the Green Heart scheme! It looks great! What will the final weight be on the plane? Could you go electric? I ended up going electric on my ESM LA-7 as I just didn't want anything sticking out of the cowl. It would be tough to fit a gas motor inside that 109 cowl. You might be able to get a inline glow motor inside. Electric would be easy. My KMP Stuka is electric and has a similar cowl at the 109 and fits inside easily with the batteries behind the firewall.

Are the wings foam and built up?

Keep up on the posts!

Jeff

The wings are built from nicely laser cut balsa and ply...it seems to be a very user friendly set up, all nicely done. I think the prototype came in at around 17 lbs. I going to try to go as light as possible, but will probably be about the same.

As far as powerplants go, yes electric would keep everything in cowl, but I don't know if I want to spend another 2 grand on electrics for 10 min of flight time, and battery's that will need replaced. I have several smaller electrics and I'm a big fan, but I do believe that there is a point where the size of the bird makes electrics less of a perfect answer. Dunno, I'm torn. I'd love to keep it all in cowl or as much as possible.

I held my G-45 up to the plans, and to be honest with you, I can't believe a G20 or G26 wouldn't fit. I'm not sure of the actual specs on either as of yet.

Casey

Casey, I've got an OS 1.2AX in my Platt and the fins are fully within the cowl. The only cuts are for the muffler pipe and an air hole to vent some air flow thru the opened radiator in the bottom. Ground tests show power to be good, and the weight is about the same as you'll end up. I think you might get away with an Evolution 26cc, but that would be about the limit of a gas motor that would fit in there I would bet. I would say go with an OS or a Moki 1.35 2 stroke. Really nice quality stuff in the kit.
