This bronze head MVVs 40 recently made it's way to me.

I suspect it is one of the (up until now for me, mythical) factory MVVS 40 diesels.

That is exactly the way my MVVS .61 Diesel head was constructed but it lacked that purty paint job.

My MVVS 40 * which now has a davis head) the factory head did not have the dome that the compression screw fits in , just flat no tommy bar, that must be an early one. the 61 is gone, bore and stroke increased to a 77 , do not think a diesel head for it , (Pe Rievers site) martin
the 15 is history

MVVS "bronze head" .40 (6.5 cc) diesel on the bench.

Non OEM carb did not throttle particularly well. It will be replaced with an MVVS carb for the next running session.

Re-ran the above MVVS .40 engine with a current specification MVVS R/C throttle carburettor. 11.3 x 8.2 prop fitted.

It did not perform any better.

It did not sound happy.

Even with the contra-piston adjusted as far out as possible, and a rich setting, the engine ran over-compressed. Very dark exhaust goop with black soot spots, no matter what I tried.

Disappointment. I removed the head. One standard aluminium head shim had been fitted. Contra-piston noted as being 2 mm up from flush.

Time for plan "B".

Earlier in this thread Bob Davis offered an old stock MVVS .40 diesel conversion head to anyone who wanted it. Back then I contacted Bob, and we concluded business. Head duly delivered and put in box with engine.

With engine still in the stand, DDD head was taken out of its packet, and installed in a trice.

Re-start.

Result - complete success. Easy adjustment, light honey coloured exhaust oil. DDD allen head compression adjusting screw setting non critical; but linear and positive to adjustment. Screw ultimately set about 1 mm above bottoming out. Hand starting a breeze.

Remedy for factory head? Rubbish bin? No. Will we will sort it? Yes. Too much fun to be had not to! Also, too easy.

I will skim the factory head chamber a small increment (using my friends lathe). However, firstly, I will just buy more shims; or make a thicker one or two, just for fun, from the skin of a can of my favourite summer drinking pilsner, in order to raise the deck by small known measures.

Then, skim factory head button once value is known.

Video of run with DDD head installed:

No surprise on the preformance of the Davis head over the MVVS both my MVVS 40 and 61 wear them the 61 came with the stock MVVS head and was replaced with the Davis
Ditto on all my Irvine 40 diesels, all replaced with Davis , much easier to adjust and more power than the stock ones
If you are considering a non-classic diesel it might be wise to pick and buy one * that Davis makes a head for Fox ,OS etc check the list of available heads on his site martin

* Glow that he has heads for

Derek, you are running more than 11" diameter and more than 8" of pitch and wondering why it sounds overcompressed?

Take it back to an 11x6, rinse and repeat mate. You should be getting about 12000 rpm with this prop.

Might just do that with an APC, RAM, Master Scimitar, or other light load prop.

That old Thunder Tiger prop really is a club. My four strokes liked it back in the day.

It is interesting that there is no squish band or combustion bowl in the MVVS head. Bottom of button insert and contra are dead flat.

I'd have thought 9600 for a diesel .40 was pretty reasonable (PAW .35TBR does about 9000 from memory). In Fiery's video it's doing about 8500, which again seems ok for an 11.3x8.2.

My tach batteries went flat as I left them on after my last bench test session. One of those "Hmmm" moments as I fronted the blades and switched on [>:] .

I will replace them and re-run the MVVS using a lower load fan to get some figures.

Will post further to update findings.

Hi Derek, I've got an audio tacho app on my phone, so can get readings from YouTube vids etc. Quite handy. (Your Irvine 20 was doing about 10600 btw).

OK all had a little time so pulled the MVVS 40 Davis head off the shelf and did a re-run today . fuel DAVIS ABC

Wood zinger 12x6 8700
wood XOAR 12x5 9900 Did not believe this shut down restart still 9800-9900
wood XOAR 12x8 8100-8200

compression very good had to set about 2 turns open to get rid of the overcompressed rattle then it hummed
main needle about 2 1/2 open did not mess with low speed needle running about 2800 idle instant pick up to WOT

I know should run apc plastic and revs will be better Davis tells me this all the time martin
