I got the motor on today. I put four washers behind the backplate to make sure the motor can breath.

I put LG on it, .060" musicwire made into a big staple looking thing, pushed through the floor of the fuse, then bent out and bent again for the axle area. After I bend the "staple" I push it back up to where It's just under the wing hold down dowel. I box it in with balsa and lots of Ambroid, that way the whole side of the fuse take the landing loads.

I used a dowel at the front and two magnets at the back of the wing to hold it on.

Right now it balances at about 50% of the wing chord, the battery should make it balance correctly.

I like the color and also those crosses! It's definitely got that classic look.

Nice "scale" choice Rich. Makes a change to see one other than red. Forrest Green is another "Scalish" color that should be tried.

After letting the plane sit all summer waiting for a day when I decided to take my nitro planes out, I thought I really want to fly this, but just don't want to deal with the nitro mess, so I put a electric motor on it. I test flew it today in 10 mph winds, it flew perfectly no trim necessary at all. Due to the gusty nature of the winds I didn't do much slow flight other than landing. I found the little sucker just won''t roll. I get it to roll about 170* and that's it. I may have to put more down throw in to get it to roll through 180*.

I put one of these in it:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5358

Its a 2000Kv motor, so with the 7x5 prop and a 2 cell 650 mah Lipo I have on it I'm getting ~14000 which pulls it well during 15minute flights.

That is really funny because I did the exact same thing! I put on an E-Flite 250 and a 2 cell 480mAh pack. Did the same thing to my 1/2A SST. Took the TD off and put on a Himax outrunner with double the power of the TD and none of the hassles. I also have a Brodak Flite Streak C/L that currently has a Fox .35 Stunt on it but will be switched over to electric as soon as I use up the gallon of fuel I bought for it.

Well, maybe we will have to rename the forum "1/2a glow planes converted to electric".
I finally finished my old Ziroli Sukhoi, but installed an outrunner instead of the TeeDee 09 R/C
that was slated for it.
And I just converted my old "Stick" funfly type plane that had a Cox Dragonfly engine to a
2000 kv outrunner. Also got a bunch of ".020" size micro outrunners from HK to install on
my Piper Vagabond, Dicks Dream, and my Littlest Stick.
I tried the stick yesterday, but it was a 2 second flight as I was not at all prepared for
how crazy responsive it would be. I last flew it about 10 years ago with the .049.
I guess that 10 years later my reflexes are not what they used to be.
Anyway, it's ready to go again and it WILL have dual rates or heavy expo this time.
Dave
EDIT: FYI This wing in the photos was recovered with 1.5 mil Doculam and painted with Krylon Fusuion.
The original transparent red Solarfilm did not tolerate the direct sunlight through the attic skylights very well.
Somehow the rudder was spared.

I gave up on that type motor, I bought 8 for $6 apiece, and some extra prop shafts. I smoked one, but I bent 4 prop shafts just landing. I tried changing the prop shafts, but I bent the new ones putting them in. The few I haven't destroyed are going to be used only for pusher apps now.

My crash bent this one. The 8" prop in the photo is too big for it, I realized that quickly enough
to save the motor. A 6x3 seems OK though. This motor is $4.50 and I got it because
it would spin a 1/2a prop at TeeDee RPM's. But I agree, the bell motors may be a fools bargain.
The plane was sure moving out on the 3 cell lipo and the Graupner 6x3 I had on it. At least for the 2 seconds
it flew before I screwed it into the dirt.

Try cutting the shaft back with a Dremel tool so you can use a split collet prop adapter. Push the adapter right up against the can. With the back face of the adapter pressed tightly against the can, it helps support the shaft and you will have less "sprung" length and less chance of bending the shaft with light bumps. However, if it does bend, it is usually behind the bell and the motor is either toast or due for a replacement shaft.

At least they don't call me "Mr. Bendy Shaft" any more.

Rich

Your Stik looks pretty spiffy - I really like your choice of colors. It's a nice deviation form the standard red.

Andrew,
That's exactly what I did to it last night. It's very slightly bent behind the bell as you said, but it's usable (see update below) again.

UPDATE - After transferring the prop and driver on an identical new motor, I have decided that the crashed motor is
now unacceptably out of balance. $5 down the tubes!

I haven't succumbed to the appeal of the dark side with my LaStick yet. In June I upgraded it from a TD.010 to TD.020 power. It is a match made in heaven and I find myself flying it more often these days. Seems to fly with a lot of authority when it's scooting along properly. As for the lack of roll ability, I haven't experienced that with my setup. The rudder and dihedral are set as per plans. These little Sticks are great flyers. Long live'em.

Yea, I think I just don't have enough elevator throw.

I really wanted to fly some Cox engines but when I got into it I remembered all of the reasons I got out of glow in the first place. And I'm talking about the bigger glow engines which run so much better. Plus my BL setup has so much more power than even the TD .020 I had on it. These engines will always hold a special place for me but I'm afraid the only time they will make a sound is when I take them out ocassionally and run them on a stand.

That being said, I'm glad there are guys out there that are flying them. I just don't have the patience for it any more.

Keep it up guys.

Mike
