If you have converted a Herr Texan from wet to dry, I would appreciate hearing what motor, gear box and battery combination you used.

Hi Frank,

Actually, I am working on converting the Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan to electric power but that is a much larger .60-size version of the famous WWII fighter trainer.

The Herr AT-6 Texan is a 1/2A size, 36" wingspan that weighs about 19-20oz. I would suggest looking into a geared Speed 300 power system that is commonly used on electric planes of this size. They are inexpensive, light, and provide plenty of power for a 20oz model.

GWS makes them in there EPS 300C series. You can view them here at [URL=http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/electric_rc_power_systems_107407_products.htm]AeroMicro[/URL].

You can also buy a different style gearbox for mounting halfway through the firewall called an MJ (or MP Jet) gearbox at [URL=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/gear280.htm]Hobby Lobby[/URL].

The gearboxes come in different reduction ratios for various prop sizes. If you tell us the ground clearance of your Herr Texan, we can determine the gear ratio and prop size that is best suited for it.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if what I now have, would do the trick, which is the GWS EPS300C and Speed 300/MP Jet gear box. I was thinking of ordering the MP Jet bruchless 25/35-20 and their 4:1 gearbox. Having experience with their .061 diesel, I know that this combo would be a quality product.

Maybe I'll go with the Speed 300 and give it a try. I can order the bruchless if that doesn't work.

I have been playing around with electric off and on for many years and am now in the "on" mode, getting all "charged up" after attending the KRCC E-Fly, in Kingston, Ontario. There were 42 pilots who brought an average of 5 planes each, including Keith Shaw, the head guru. Talk about sensory overload!!!!!

Keith has some really nice stuff! We see him at the NEAT Fair down in Whiteplains, NY every year.

What were the gear ratios on your speed 300 gearboxes? One gearbox may mount easier than the other depending upon your cowl size and space needed from the firewall.

I have one of the MP Jet 25/35 brushless motors. So far, it has held up well and provides awesome power for my Alfa Models P-51 with a 3-cell Lithium pack.

The box is a 4.1:1 on my Speed 300 and I'm using a APC 9 X 6, with 7 & 8 cell 600AE's on a 30" span roll your own profile 3D style model. It works great and I would think will do well in the Herr Texan. I'm making up a shunt to read the amps to calculate the watts, so I will know what I'm doing. I've just been reading mags and web sites, just guessing so far.

Just sold my Cox engines/parts collection and am itching to spend it on a new "E" drive system. There are so many choices out there, all coming in just the last few years. Makes you wonder what the next few will bring. The new "out runners" like the Nippy sure are interesting.

I meet a modeler from France, who told me that there and in Germany where he flies, 90% off all R/C model airplanes are "E" powered. I do think it is the future of the hobby and for me has kept the hobby interesting and fun after 35 years of flying R/C.

I'm not sure about Utopia Hobbies but your geared 4:1 system with the 9x6 prop should work nicely.

The new 3-cell Kokam 1200 pack being sold at Hobby Lobby would work well on that setup too.

Hey Greg,
I am new to the electric stuff also and I have a 1/2a Scale Edge 540. I am looking for a drive unit(Engine, Gearbox, Prop) combo that will suit the plane. I want to have plenty of power so I can fly aerobatics. If you could help me with this I would appreciate it. Thanks

I built and flew the herr texan. It's a fantastic plane. Mine was glow power and started off with a AP Yellowjacket .15 on the nose. Then later put on the norvel .074 which was lighter and had no performance decrease. I plane to build another one for the norvel .061. Back to the topic, the texan sits low to the ground with the stock landing gear and the ideal prop is a 7 inch. As I recall the 8 inch would plow dirt/pavement if the tail lifted too high trying to pull over a rock/object. I built mine light and it was around 20oz when done compared to the GWS Zero I had before that which came in around 16 oz. I would almost say the 300 power system would be underpowered for this config (especially on anything less than 8 cell). The texan has a flat bottom airfoil so that helps and maybe playing with props could make the difference but I think you wouldn't penetrate much wind. If you built it as a 3 channel (ail,ele,throttle) and forgot about the landing gear and just belly landed you would save several ounces and then it would probably work decently. Use AAA 720ma NiMh 8 cell pack (best for the 300c power system) if you go that route and make sure you have venting for the batts because they will get warm.
