Hi Tom

Sorry mate trust me I,am not trying to start another engine bashing thread. I,am just intretested in this engine like your self cause I would like to use in my new pilot rc sbach 342 when it arrives next month so I have been reading as much as I can on its performance. I was looking at other egines before this one but I like the YD and I see a lot of potential in this engine after break in it should turn big props easy and with steady revs which is great. I just follow this thread and hope to put some good info when I get mine and run it on my new plane. and at the end of the day just like your self the most inportant part is to have fun and enjoy to fly thats the best bit.

thanks regards cisco

No worries mate. I understood you the first time and like I said that it wasn't directed at you. That statement has been brewing for a while and it would have come out sooner rather then later.
Good luck with the Sbach. I think it will be a great combo. That is about the same size and weight as my Extra.

This is probably the last video of this combo for a while. It's ready to go to Joe Nall.

I like it thats a better way of washing the gunk of the plane he does it so easy I think I may just not try it and use a cloth.

Hay Henry

I have only skimmed thru this thread and only saw one mention of a pits stile muffler(ozz only) So now that my arm has healed from you forcing me to buy the YD-A 56 at Toledo and another unscrupulous seller sold me a bird to put it in I thought I would try to find all of the bits and peaces for a next winter build, So have you come up with a quality pits style muffler as yet?

Got great oss and ass at or club on the quality of the engine. may put in on the test bench for a tank or two just of giggles to see if ti will run

And thanks in advance

Hey Bob. J-Tech will make you a Pits muffler for your YD-A. I hear that a Pits muffler made for a DA-50 will also fit.

Question for Henry:

I spoke to you at Toledo weak signals about the better mid range torque curve of your new YD-A engines. I can't wait to buy one! I just wondered if you had any thoughts about whether or not the new engines might like a 3 blade prop as well as, or better than the normal 2 blades props we usually use?

Hey iliveonlytocrash

The YD-A's love the 3 blades. One our distributors from Australia, mounted a 22/8 carbon fiber tri blade on his 56cc and is getting some spectacular performance from them. Go ahead..the engines love them.

Cheers
Henry

Better than that, - 3 blade 22x10
Well beyond what you would expect from a typical 50cc class engine but goes great

Yep, I can vouch for that - A Biela 22/10 3 blade.

I remember Toothpicks face when he flew the vertical on that plane - he was pretty happy. The plane had been "set up" for a scale event complete with a lot of things to add weight to it.

Hey Tim
Post away your questions....

Here is the link for the guys to see the video you fella's made using the JC28cc and your new MX30cc aircraft.
This is a well made video that highlights the abilities of a very aerobatic and yet very easy to fly aircraft. The aircraft is a perfect match to the JC28cc engine. You did a great job.

Henry, quick questions ...

You're now showing the new yd-a 23cc engine, and you also show the jc 28cc engine.

Is the jc 28cc the same as the previous 28cc that you've been selling but that you are not any longer?.. In other words, are you just clearing out old stock of that engine or is it one that you will be continuing to handle?

I note that the price of those two engines are the same, that they weigh almost exactly the same, and I can conclude from that that they are pretty close in size as well. So in a couple of sentences, can you explain what the "new" 23cc engine has over the jc 28cc engine?

I had been waiting for the new yd-a 23cc engine that you're replacing the previous 20cc engine with, but at the significant jump in cost, I'm not sure it makes sense anymore over other similar engines. I was assuming that the new yd-a 23cc would come in at around the same price as the former 20cc engine you were selling.

Great!  Then I'll send my customers here to join the discussion!  I have several local people who are getting the MX2 combo with this engine and EVERYONE loves this little engine!  It's machined looks - it's reliability - it's performace!

Thanks again for posting the video!  I'm going to have a revised one with more flying and better angles pretty soon.

Tim

Hey Highflight

The JC 28cc is the only one we have sold in that size range..... You may be thinking of the Aerovate 26cc which we oem'd from rcgf once. KMP is handing the Aerovate line now.
All the stock of the 28cc is current and we have no plans on discontinuing this engine. This is a great engine. Steve and I worked together with JC Engines on this current design. It has met our needs totally. We do work closely with the factory to assure quality, and we do have their ear and they are responsive.

The YD-A engines will be our premium engine line and we will continue to offer the JC 28cc. (it is an awesome performer).

OKAY... the new YD-A engine line....
The YD-A line of engines (23cc, 32cc, 38cc, 42cc 56cc, 64Twin, 76Twin, 84Twin, 112Twin) have been designed and are built specifically for aero flying....

Some history first - Steve and I started musing about developing an engine(s) about 2 years ago. At that time we were both sole distributors for another chinese engine manufacturer. That relationship could have been extremely lucrative but different ways of looking at product and quality put us on the track that we are now.

Being engineers we know what it takes to produce an engine. Being rc flyers we know what we needed to design INTO the engine. We can tell you that pretty well most of the current crop of engines being produced in asia, are built based upon cost, profit, max rpm. Quality is a subset of profit and it is a variable.

We took our knowledge and brought out the 56cc and 112cc engines. These are built to
1. Provide a torque curve that produces thrust were it is needed - in the mid range - where 90% of the most flying occurs.
2. Design a cylinder that is unique in design -it is ours - the molds are ours - and we produce them for us only. Lots of other benefits too. We are beholden to no one.
3. Chrome lined cylinders - for long life
4. Quality components
5. The ability to use a wider range of prop sizes - for example the 56cc can swing a 24" prop (perfect for IMAC and for scale projects).
6. Lower over all maintenance requirements - great for the weekend flyer...who just wants to fly and not think about anything except having fun.

The characteristics of these engine are different than what guys are used to flying. Steve and I realized early on that we are going to have a time of it educating flyers. RC flyers have been fed the line that rpm is the holy grail of engine design and performance - the higher the better. It ain't. Engine HP is another fallacy. Just look at how the "A" line of RC engine manufacturers market their engines......

Based upon our success with the 56cc and 112cc, - the designing spree took hold. You learn a lot from customer feedback and from our flying experiences. We put this all in the design matrix. Steve designed and produced prototypes of the above mentioned engines, and he and his guys have been flying the crap out them for the last 4-5 months. Neither Steve or I want to bring an engine to market that will not meet the expectation of the users - and this includes quality of design, and performance envelopes that are best in class

In addition to the above features of the 56/112 engines, we added even more features. Some we can't talk about because Steve is working out some patent issues with the pertinent companies. But the overall result is that the upcoming YD-A engines are superior in performance envelopes to the engines that we have been comparing them with. And yes... Steve is (has) putting the engines on a dynamo-meter to get the pertinent data.

Yup.. that is a boastful statement... Almost arrogant too....And you can believe that those statements will be challenged by many........and those challenges will be met head on with facts and data. I know that Steve can't wait for this either....lol...

The new YD-A's will be manufactured to high expectations.
So what will you get for the money...
1. An engine that will work right of the box.
2. A fantastic performance envelope suitable for the weekend sport flier as well as the IMAC flier or the scale builder
3. Made in the west.. not the east.
4. The ability to use larger dia props in each engine range
5. User options for changing the exhaust location - the exhaust can be left side, right side, or rear exhaust.
6. Oh... and the ability for us to offer an option were a customer can have a customized performance envelope manufactured into the engine that will fit the aircraft. This will be an extra cost, but just think of the different applications we can tune the engine for! I heard Steve talking about making an engine specifically tuned for Pylon racing....cooooool stuff.
7. No mid range burble

OKAY so to answer your initial question about the YD-A 23...
This size of engine is growing in popularity because a lot of the glow fliers are switching over to gas. And the 1.00 ci to 1.80 ci glow engines are being replaced with this 20cc size gas engines.

The size dimensional size of our 23cc size is the same or slightly smaller than the current crop of 23cc engines available. Weight wise too.. similar.... The 23cc is a smaller package than the 28cc we offer too. Once the final manufacturing order is given we will update the engine weight and dimensions. We are using a worst case engine weight right now.

The 23cc will be a premium engine. It will offer a performance envelope that you will be able to use over a wider range of aircraft. The YD-A 23 engine is not being built to compete with manufacturers who base their products on price first and the rest second. If cost is a primary concern, then look elsewhere. If quality, performance envelope, ease of use and cost of overall ownership is part of decision matrix then these engines should be considered.

We want to offer a line of engines that have a consistent build and "feel" across the lineup. The engines come with a good accessory package too. For example.. all the YD-A engines (including the 56cc and 112cc) ship with an ignition cut-off switch and an ignition battery on/off switch - $35 retail value. We are also working with XOAR propellers to offer custom YD-A props that are tuned for the particular engine.

Once the intro dates of the engines get posted by Steve, more in depth information about the engines will be forthcoming too.

Sorry to take so long in answering your question Highflight!!!!

Cheers
Henry

Where else do you get an intimate knowledge of the product like that!  That's why I started offering the JC 28 in the first place... I saw how Henry stood behind his stuff!
