Has anyone built a Balsa USA 1/3 scale J-3 Cub and modified it to use a wing tube??

No

Do you plan to eliminate the struts? I personally don't believe the BUSA cabin structure will hold up very long without struts if that is what you had in mind. Just my opinion.

TonyI talked to you several times when I was building a 1/3 scale super cub. It turned out to be a beautiful plane but was such a pain to put the wings on, defenatley a two man job. I sold it to a guy in FL. Was thinking of building a J-3 and wondered if I could design a wing tube into it for ease of assy. Any thoughts? Jerry

I think the wing tube will be difficult to start on the Cub due to the wing size, the wing is almost 6' long. A person tends to gasp this wing near it's center of gravity, near the middle. The tube socket is 3 ' away and out of sight, since there's no lead on the tube, the socket must be dead nuts to start on the tube. My project is still in the paint shop so I'm not speaking from experience but i think one with a socket would still require some help. I do enjoy talking with other modelers at the field anyway.
On number two I will use longer 1/4" x 3/8" spruce to provide additional overlap on the window verticals to increase strength. Both deeper into the fuselage sides and higher into the stub wings. Rather than a tube, I might consider making the wing spars longer and designed to slip into a rectangler box in the top of the fuselage. Or possibly even the opposite, such as the Hosteller Decathalon, the wing spars form the top and bottom of the box with 1/8" plywood sides, the spars are wrapped with glass near the root. The spar in the fuselage is 1/4" plywood that slips into the pockets in the wings.
Your thoughts?

It will be tricky to do, but possible. You would have to beef up some parts on the airplanes, and make a new system for the wing struts. I've done wing tubes on all my airplanes, and thats exactly what i have to do, and not a problem yet. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

If I build this I would make it a clipped wing Cub. The struts would still be functional and the only differece would be the additional wing tube. It would be more of an locational thing instead of functional. I picked up a 1/4 scale Hangar 9 arf J-3 and that is the same design I would build into the 1/3 scale. The wing tube is a fairly small dia. 3/4" and fits just behind the front cross member on the upper front of the cabin. The wing is located with the tube and also a rear dowel and then (2) screws each side from inside the cabin into blind nuts in the wing. Would also try to fit a Zenoah T-80 under the cowl. Might have to split the cowl and have the heads stick out each side. Any thoughts?? Thanks, Jerry
