I got my idea from some bodyshop training I once took. They generally mark the primer filler coat with flat black quick dry paint thats more or less spattered on. This way they knew how deep they were sanding. When the paint spatter was gone it was time to put another layer of the primer. To make a long story short I use a charcoal pencil on the leading edge darkly right at the tip - the no sand yet zone- then shape by eye not to much then, I lightly shade the leading edge and use a long sanding board to finish it up to final sanding time. This helps give witness marks so you can both hone your skill as well as see how much room you have sand to get those irregularities out. Its getting late. I hope this is usefull to someone.
