Status: offline 		I am not sure why type of service history this tank had, but the painting and metal effects look great. My only comment is that it looks like it has been sitting on a target range for a decade, You nailed the worn look of a an old tank.

Status: offline 		שלום -Interesting but where did you get your info for this model? The IDF never used Pershings in any converted state. Israel used Shermans and Centurians then went to M-47, then various models of the M-48 and finally the M-60 until they developed the Merkava.
Many Russian T-55 and T-62s were captured and were converted and upgraded and there were AMX-13s and a very few Cromwells and M-41s, but Pershings with PRA, no.

I too could find no photo reference for this model, though I am sure it could have happened.

If you hadn't stated this was a desert scheme, I'd think this was an extreme weathered and aged tank. I can see the desert now and the after affects of succumbing to harsh desert sandstorms. Kind of a bit reddish though, like it ran through Alabama clay which give the impression of rust vs desert sand.

OK, I missed 23 rivets by miscounting

Alan, The tank really looks great and the weathering job is fantastic. Is this from using baking soda and windex? Whatever, it s very nice job. It really looks like a real one that has been sitting down range for a few years., great job.

No Pershings were used in a desert environment. I have also been looking for other IDF Tanks to build, only thing in the planning process and do-able now is the AMX Sherman. That cleff turret is gonna be fun. Now if someone puts out an M-47 or 48... Or a Centurian...

That makes no sense. Nobody claims that 97's were made from converted PIII's. PC used some PIII parts to scratch build one. A copy of an actual tank that rumbled around, not a paper panzer.

97's weren't made from PIII's, nor were they made out of plastic.


Nice weathering job though and I compliment Alan on the nice looking unique model.

I wish I had a tenth of your talent-actually, no, I wish I had any talent!  I have seen the rubbed/shiny metal effect used on model railway locomotives in raised areas which would have suffered more scuffs and abrasion. It really lends the impression heft and solidity to your model.

Status: offline 		Jeff, please show me where a Type 97 is available? I CONVERTED a Pz III to the 97....same as I did with 7 other Pz III variations, including a functional ausf M Flammenpanzer, Sig 33 and Su-76i. No one ever said that Japanese tanks were made from German Pamzers. There are couple guys out there that have made nice Cromwells from T-34 and other tanks chassis.....that's not to say that all Cromwell,s were made from Pershings or T-34s. Not immagination, but proper utilization of modelling skills to produce a tank that is not otherwise available.

I have no bones to pick with Alan, but was merely inquring as to what reference materials he was using, as the IDF never used and M-26s in any form. He does amazing work and it's a pleasure to see his stuff. We have been corresponding on other tanks and his reply was very cordial and we remain on a humorus and helpful plane. I have recently dug very deep into the IDF as I expect to be serving with them soon and I have aquired a nice reference library of IDF Armor. Not many people are familiar with Israel of the Israeli military and for that reason, I posed the question and qualified the reason therefore.

Status: offline 		I used just about every technique I know to paint this model. In order of application I:

Painted it olive green using a spray can aerosol probably equivalent to car paint in strength. Sprayed on some Uncle Sam Stars (it already had some paint on it as the model was second hand).
Sprayed it with hair spray.
Painted it Tamiya desert yellow with an airbrush and sprayed on same Isreali markings.
Let it dry a few days and then using a sponge and brush I wet it with distilled water which then eventually loosens the hairspray and made the desert yellow come away in nice irregular flakes. I wanted to see more of the green and also hints of the USA stars (to show its previous owner) however I think I either laid on too little hair spray or too much desert yellow as not as much came off as I wanted.
Dark wash with white spirit and oil paint.
Dry brushing with oil paint.
Highlighting to all edges with a sponge in Tamiya Buff. I might have used some Tamiya Dark Yellow too just for variety.
Rusty scratches to all exposed corners and edges with Tamiya dark brown but leaving some of the Buff behind.
Overall rust flecks with a sponge in Tamiya Nato Brown.
Rust and dirt steaks with artists pastel chalks.
Matt varnished the whole model.
Exposed metal edges and scratches with a sponge, firstly with Tamiya Steel and then again but just on corners with Tamiya Flat Aluminium. You must not matt varnish metal colours otherwise that simply turn grey and lose their metal lustre.

I was inspired by the artwork on the tanks in a computer game I play sometimes called Theatre of War. There the artists have textured and and coloured their models very realistically and they really look like operating working metal beasts and I wanted to capture that look.

It only takes a bit of machine gun fire playing over a tank, plus an artillery barrage or two and a sandstorm and a bit of dirty street fighting and even a new vehicle looks old and battered in no time at all. Especially tanks that actually see a bit of real war.

Status: offline 		Well I think the end results are very impressive and after studying it, a lot of hard work went into this project. With a little creative licensing, you have came out with a tank with ERA and convincing weathered to look like it fought in the desert.

As for a Pershing being there or not, who cares? There was and is all kinds of strange and unusual stuff floating around in that AO, and unless you saw and touched each and every AFV there, one can not say for certain such and such a tank was or was not there. In '67 there were Pzkw 4 longs on Golan, in use by the Syrians, some of which were destroyed and some captured by the IDF. Who would have thought that?

Sometimes, it seems like people are so hell bent on wanting to be seen as an expert, and just spout off facts (often inaccurate facts too) they forgot that half of this hobby is fun. If you're not planning on modeling a particular historical tank that has lots of pictorial reference, then go ahead and go wild. The only limit is your imagination.

That's all I was trying to accomplish, not arguing or wanting to be ganged up on either. He wasn't dressing a monkey up in a suit and calling it something else, which is what was done with the Panzer III. I guess the pot can call the kettle black.

Status: offline 		I put some sandbags on it, they are removable, they are little cloth sacks filled with plaster and left to dry rock hard once molded and pressed onto the model.
