Well, I ordered one of Spylinker's 800mw wireless cams yesterday off ebay ($23.88 + $25s&h). Pretty inexpensive camera to get started with, I'm anxious to give it a try. I'm looking at mounting it to a Hanger 9 Solo Sport Trainer. Any recommendations or tips on mounting as well as getting good quality video from this inexpensive system?

Thanks,
Jason.

Me too!! I just recieved mine!! (I ordered two 800mw systems as they work out so damned cheap) and the dude didn't even use a smart-ass postal service so I don't have an import tax on them!!

And for your info.. I'm totally impressed by the picture quality!!

Fubar's raising the bar a few notches at a time... and it's maddening!! All I need now is something to record the signals, and then to work out how to make wmv movies... and I'm set to play

3D gimble system for camera steering is on the drawing board too... and It'll weight the same amount as the ballast I use on my Sagitta Project 2 on medium sindy days... Fast Sloper movies here we come

Thanks for all the Great tips and advice Fubar...

N.

Lets see.
You want to get part of the plane in the field of view for a reference point but thats up to you. My first one showed TOO much of the plane, my second one showed none and I was told that was hurl inducing. Hehe.
You want as little of the prop showing as possible because the CMOS camera will translate the moving prop into a series of horizontal lines such as those in my "Eyelectra" video. Those lines were the Master Airscrew 12/8 folding prop passing in front of the camera. We thought it was electrical noise from the motor at first.
Wrap the camera in as much foam as possible to isolate it from vibrations.
Shield the camera from glare. It hates direct sun into the lens less than sunlight shining across the lens. I inserted my Spylinker camera about an inch into an EPP hood/pod on my slope glider and about an inch recessed in a balsa housing on my Electra.
Mount the rx on some kind of pole such as a length of pvc pipe. 6' or better if you can. You want the rx antenna above your head and the heads of spectators. 1.2ghz doesnt like traveling thru trees, vehicles, and bodies.
You can pretty much stick the tx anywhere you want but for aerial video, it works better with the antenna on the tx pointing downwards. For our latest outing (video coming soon) my father used a CCD camera and the Spylinker tx and just taped the tx to the side of his PT-40 with the antenna pointing downwards. Worked fine. You can stick the tx on top, bottom, the side, wherever it works for you and just bend the antenna to aim upwards or downwards.
THE FOLLOWING IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!:
If you decide to modify the system wiring such as removing all those RCA plugs be aware that there is a 5v regulator in the lead going to the camera itself. The tx runs on 8v but the camera itself runs on 5v. The regulator is inside that rubber bead between the RCA connector and the camera. You can remove it with an Xacto knife or razor blade if you are careful. The little PC board has the connections labled if you need to resolder it.
I left the system stock for my Slope Glider but modified the wiring for my Electra. We found out about the 5v regulator the hard way when my father rewired his for a direct 9v feed and smoked the camera. Other than that, your setup is going to depend on what you mount it on.
Post those videos!

Hey Fubar-One, thanks for the info. I'm excited to get the camera, hopefully it will be here in a couple of weeks. Should be fun and I will be sure to post the videos.

Thanks!
Jason.

Just got a 200mw ebay-cam yesterday and it works pretty good. It will go on my plane tomorrow and test flight tomorrow night. Got it hooked up to a Sony TRV-103 digital 8 for recording tests show good results from inside light source can't wait to see what the pics look like.

Mariner,

As long as the camera itself has the input record function it should work. Most do but there are a few that don't. My sony has the RCA composite jacks on it as do most that have the ability to record from an o/s source

What he said!
Other than that, its just a matter of camcorder taping quality. My father uses Hi-8, I use digital 8. Happens to be what we had.

Well... I'm still on the lookout for a video camera, and I'm gonna start machining the bits for the camera mount before too long.

most people suggesta cheapo Hi-8 with Line-in capability... i'm just searching the flea markets for cheap ones at the moment...

A 3 week holiday back in the UK should delay things nicely, but I'll have a good laugh getting things up and running when I get back!!

Seyawl,

Nick.

Hey.... finally got Fubar's new Vid to download... Sweet!!!
It made me wonder if i need to bother to make my camera mount pan up and down as well as the 400 degree rotation I have planned.... hmmm... not sure I'll bother... but on the other hand.... might be fun... :

I still havent decided to add a tilt to my camera mount (I have everything I need) or just install a second servo into the fuse and mount the camera on that from time to time.
I figure the vibration effect will increase with the camera hanging from two different axis' but really havent tried it more due to laziness. I have my Kadet balanced right and the rx is buried pretty well. I would need to dig out the rx so I can make another channel hookup for the tilt. Probably would need to get another BB servo too.
It worked well on the bench in the mid build tests but I dropped the idea figuring I could add it later. Now Im just lazy. :
I figure the vibration effect will increase with the camera hanging from two different axis' but really havent tried it more due to laziness.
I rekon the vibration point could be ruled out and left for you 'Nitro' people.

I'm one of the people who actually appreciates it when my flying wing gliders are attacked by Red kites... and that happend a bit here in Sweden if your flying in the right areas (and that won't happen with an MDS 58 screaming away....)

So.. No power for me, therefore no vibration.... hopefully. (I've mad a bit of effort to design out anythings that might cause wind-based vibration, .... (warning.... impending geekyness) infact i calculated that 'camera mast' at 6 inches long (random figure) WOULD vibrate and probably snap IF I managed to get my glider to peak approx 800mph......

So.. that's no problem... I'll just have to fly around with the air-brakes on...

Plus, as I get to machine all the bits myself, I can afford to design it with ridiculously high tollerances.... and make sure I hit them.

(sometimes, I just LOVE My Job!!!)

The camera mount so far will be rotated by a standard Fut' S148 servo, geared up by one of 3 mechanical systems.. not yet decided. This will rotate the 'mast' on which a camera and a Graupner C341 mini-servo will sit. The tilt servo (mini) will work through it's normal range, giving an approximate 120 degrees of tilt, and the S148 will hopefully allow 400 degrees of rotation.

The reason i don't mind pissing around and fixing all of this? I have yet to get my hands on a video camera that will record stuff... so.. I have time to kill!!

have a sweet weekend,

N

Flying gliders isnt easy for me due to lack of open usable field for launching. I do have an Electra that I am playing with tho. My problem with it is due to vehicle problems I am having at this time. Strapping down a 2 meter wing in the bed of my GF's truck stinks but my PU with the shell is down for the count right now so the glider experiments will have to wait.
You are fully correct about the Nitro/vibration relationship tho!

I just got the 200mw system delivered today. I only ordered it 3 days ago

I was expecting a plastic camera but was surprised to find out it was metal. I guess that makes it very robust but a little on the heavy side for the park-fly type planes.

Are the pinhole type lighter?

I went for the non pinhole type so to get the best possible image quality.

Does anyone have both and can you let us know if there is a real difference?

Cheers, Katipo
