Greetings,

I know that this topic has probably been beaten to death on RCU and Spadtothe bone but I need help. For some reason, I can't get consistent bonding results when working with CA. Sometime it works for me, most of the time not and I find myslef going over joints several times in order to get a good bond.

I have tried flashing with flame (my least favorite method), flahing with acetone alone, scratcing with sandpaper followed by a acetone wipe and the last technique was using a water spray. I like building with coro but this is getting to me. BTW I am using extra thick CA applied in little dots.

Thanks for any help

Chuck B

I've only tried thick once. It worked, but not 100%. I've tried thin, and it works better, but still not 100%. I use meduim (zap-a-gap or Handibond),water, mist, dots, and haven't had any trouble.

Cbreeze, I too am having CA bonding problems - I scrub the surface first with a scotch bright pad and mineral spirits, then dry and put drops of CA and mist the other surface. This works for me about 50% of the time. I have had zero luck flashing and have melted some coro! Maybe I'll try scrubbing with mineral spirits first, acetone next and then try the CA and see if that works. I wonder if there are any other adhesives that work for gluing coro to coro?

Anyone ever try contact cement? I think (besides the noxious smell) it works good for other similar things. Cabinet laminate apply to both sides (cabinet base and laminate bottom) and let them dry. WHen they contact each other WHAMO! they are glued.
Worth a try....unfortunately I dont have any coro laying around...

Make sure the surfaces DON"T move after they make contact.

"Hybond" is a good contact cement, I'v also seen alaphatic resin used too (wood glue)

I think the acetone is the culprit! I read a few places that acetone will cause CA not to bond, someone correct me if I am wrong?

Use a hot glue gun and put a little hot glue at key holding points. hold for a few seconds. The Hot glue will hold the two areas together until the CA cures. I like to use this method also with goop, prob more then with CA.

Hey Swede,
When using Welder Adhesive do you do any special prep to the coro, or just glue it?

Quote-Anyone ever try contact cement?

I use Contact cement to join wing pannels and ailerons to coroplast. I first prep the coroplast using the falme/flash method followed by wiping it down with Windex, or Formula 409 window cleaner. So far this method has worked well for me. (Knocks on Balsa)

I use Elmers Pro-bond for gluing the wing spars, this creates a strong solid joint.

Another thing, that All-purpose Welder Cement is great! I found it all Wally World for under $3, it seems to be the same type of stuff as Goop and Shoe Goo.

As far as using CA for gluing coro to coro? I don't know... some guys must have the formula down, because I have had problems with even medium CA peeling away, witch means no sticky.

By the way, I'm in the process of finishing a Avistar Trainer Clone, inspired by the Spadet 40. Pics to follow if anyone is interested. I am thinking of calling it Corro-star or Spadistar if the name hasn't been used already.

I have been building and flying Spad since last summer. mostly electrics (Mugi and Zagi Clones). I finally converted to to Glow engines and purchased the Avistar ARFwith th OS 46FX to power the thing. My first thought was "ok this is going to turn into a pile of kindling unless I perform a SPAD clone, and practice on it first."

Tileflyer, interesting response and it did make me think for a minute. I have used acetone as a wash to "flash" my coro in the past and it worked well as an alternate method instead of the flame thing. On the other hand, I have used CA to clean up CA fog on some of my covering jobs on my balsa models. Not sure what my problem here is or why CA would work well in one application and not the next.

Reason I decided to use extra thick CA was to get the longer set time. The wings I have been building are 48" wide. I thought I would need the max working time to get the trailing edges glued and set in one piece.

Can someone please explain exactly how to use water as a kicker? Do you CA one piece and wet the other surface and join? or do you CA the bonding surface then attach them and then spray on the water as you would use a normal CA kicker?

I have been really excited about this SPAD thing but am getting a little frustrated regarding my gluing problems. I know the answere here is probably really simple but just don't what it is or what I am doing wrong.

Thanks to all who respond, hope we can figure out what I am doing wrong.

You hit it right on the nose

I would switch from acetone to mineral spirits for cleanup.I use Welder more than I use CA now.I just take a green scrubber pad and odorless mineral spirits and "sand" the area I want to glue. Then wipe excess off with a clean cotton towel or rag.I apply the Welder to one surface and touch to the other area to be glued.I then pull apart and let sit for 10 minutes and attach the two parts together.I have built about 6 planes this way,and the Coro will fail before the glue-joint.One other thing make sure you use fresh CA and not old stuff.Keep your CA in the fridge until you need it.

I experimented with Thick CA once with poor results. I myself like thin and medium ca's. When you use water, lightly mist the opposing coro (not the one you put the ca on) so that the water and ca meet exactly when you bond the two together. Also, keep in mind that while ca cures quickly, and you can release your clamps usually within minutes, it doesn't reach full strengh for a good 24 hours, so keep this in mind when testing.

Tileflyer,

Thanks for the tip. How long does it take for this stuff to dry/setup? I guess I will be off to Walmart.

FrankC29,

What kind of working time do you get with the thin or medium CA? Would there be enough time to do the trailing edge of a 48" wing in one shot?

Working time, like for repositioning? Pretty much none. You have to get it right the first shot, that's why I recommend using something, like a 2X4, to bring the wing panel down and make contact, so that it's done in an even manner, and don't release the pressure for a few minutes, this insures against the joint popping apart in places.

No. Sometimes I rub coro with mineral spirits, sometimes I don't. It seems to hold nicely either way.

The Welder takes 24 hours for a full cure acording to package label and semi-cured overnight. I have built a plane with Welder one night and flown it the next morning
