Status: offline 		For skinning, gorilla glue would be good. To glue teh foam parts together, it is not suitable, as you have to cut through foam, then through glue, and that makes a mess, with a wire that stays too long on the foam while it works it's way through a glue joint in another spot. Believe me, i tried it with gorilla glue!

Status: offline 		The hot wire goes right hrough the 77 adhesive with no problems,  I am going to sheet with Gorilla glue today,will moisten first.

Status: offline 		Well I have gotten a little futher. Cut the lower airfoil so had to slip them on the fusalage to see what things would look like.

Status: offline 		Kris you are undoubtedly right about wire cutting through a glue joint. The wings I have made required no places where wire cutting went through a glue joint. They weren't this big though, just 60 sized pattern wings. The glue was used for skinning balsa to foam joints like leading edges and basically everything in the wing except I used little dots of 5 minute epoxy to glue the foam rib blanks to my jig before cutting the top contour.

Status: offline 		What do you think of the glass work? I'm planning on build a 1/4 scale CAP 21 at some point and was planning on getting the glass parts and canopy from them, but I've heard their glass parts tend to be heavy. Did you get the wheel pants as well?

I just weighed it and it came out at 9 ounces even.  I did not get the wheel pants from them as I had an extra set from a GP Extra 300 that was just the right size.  The canopy is very solid and not floopy at all.  I have been hapy with all the stuff that I have ordered from Fiberglass Specialties.

Ulrey TOC Laser is near finishing stages (i.e. Lots of time consuming detail stuff left to do). All the major construction is done. Motor and cowl mounted, hatch finished with only the hold down tabs left, removable stab/fin done, wings done.
Lots of sanding & covering left to do. Some pictures attached.

I just pulled out the one I started building back in the early '80s. It is bigger than the 1980 version at 98.25 inch wing span and 1615 sq. inches. The plans are dated January 19, 1981.

The wing has foam ribs and was built for me by Wayne. I built the fuse and tail from the plans. I also have a glass cowl, wheel pants, aluminum gear and a canopy. Since I switched to all E-power last year, I am converting this one to "E" also.

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread, just wanted to share what I'm working on.

Status: offline 		The wingspan on mine is 85.5 inches so I must have the earlier version. Could not find any date on the plans. Hope to get it in the air here sometime soon. The weather has been so crappy I have just been bulding and have not been out to the field yet.

I have the BIG Laser like yours. I flew it in the 1982 TOC. It was powered bt a Tartan Twin 2.6 motor. I just finished a converson to electric. I'm powering it with an ElectriFly 50cc motor and a CC HV Ice 80 speed control. I am currently trying different battery combinations and prop sizes. The airplane flys very nice, is NOT a 3D airplane but performs precision aerobatics very nicely. If all goes well I hope to fly it in the Classic pattern event in Chicago in May. They are having a recreation of the early TOC. When I get a good battery/prop combo I'll let you know what it is. I've included photos 'back in the day' and some current pictures of the conversion.

The old baby looks good. I was at the '82 TOC and saw you fly it, Larry Ott here. I was hoping to get an invite that year, but I crashed before the Masters and couldn't get the backup going well enough to place in the top 10.

I bought a Tartan Twin for mine then sold it when I put the plane in storage. I just pulled it out of mothballs a few weeks ago and dusted it off. I was thinking it wouldn't be good for 3d with the small control surfaces, but I am just going to use it for IMAC so it's okay.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind, i.e.; what is the AUW and what kind of amps are you pulling, watts? I was thinking the CC 120HV, but if the HV80 is enough, it will save some weight and a few $.

Thanks for sharing.

Status: offline 		I'm getting close on mine too. May have it ready to fly next week. Needs a little more trim applied, locating battery tray, installing wheel pants. It weighs about 13.5 lbs with batteries, AXI 5330 FAI, CC HV 85 esc. 10S 5000 mah batteries. Planning to take it to Chicago for the Classic TOC also.

Are you sure that was 1982? Because I think it was 1980. My first TOC was 1982 and I placed 4th with a 100" Laser. I don't think you flew in that event, but I may be wrong. 1978 was the first TOC using scale aerobatic models. You flew the Super-Fli and Dave Brown flew the Zlin 50. A number of USA guys flew the Ed Keck Spinks. I think Dean Koger had the first 88" Ulery Laser with a Chapman or Cline .90 belt drive. I do remember the first 100" span Ulery Laser with the .90 drive and it didn't have enough power. After it crashed when a battery disconnected Wayne built the smaller one. 1980 I think was the first time the 100" Ulery Lasers were used at the TOC, mostly with the Tartans.
