Just ordered my first Kingtech from Dreamworks. Look forward to trying one out and experience the success with my own.

Plane is ready and will post experience of performance after flown

lookilook -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/6/2011 11:08 AM)

excellent choice Kevin, i have 15 flawless flights on it and last week did my first unwanted touch and go...landed at centre of runway and fast and decided to full throttle and 30 meters later i was up and flying ...hope you enjoy it as well!

You will enjoy the K-80. It is a very strong engine.

What are you putting the K-80?

Post some pics and video you can.

Great Stuff SeaLance,

What adjustments did you make to you Fadec so the Jet Cat Kero Plug will work on the K-80? What is your battery drain like?

Cheers

Ken

Going in an F16 for testing and if all goes well. Build a new yellow twin with 2 of em.

JLink125 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/17/2011 8:58 PM)

Im getting ready to start my new k80, any thing specific I should watch out for on the first start? Should I use a UAT on the test stand or just run a regular du-bro tank converted for kero? This turbine seems to be really easy and reliable from what I've read, can't wait to crank it for the first time!

Jetpilot24 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/17/2011 10:20 PM)

Jlink
You will be fine with just the DuBro tank on start up. Make sure to use the fuel filter.

No UAT needed for test running. Only thing needing to be checked before the first run is the thermocouple; make sure it is not inserted into the tailcone more than about 3mm. They tend to get pushed in during shipping.

JLink125 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/18/2011 1:55 AM)

Awesome thanks for the info, I thought the probe looked a little to far into the tail pipe.

marquisvns -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/18/2011 3:04 AM)

Yes, anywhere between 2 to 3mm will be perfect. Also, get a paper cup to prime the fuel line, you don't want to flood the engine to cause a wet start. Good Luck,

Barry

JLink125 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/22/2011 7:55 PM)

This may sound like a dumb question but I'm trying to get as much info on my engine before I run it so I don't mess anything up, with that said Barry you mentioned using a paper cup to prime the fuel line. How should I go about priming the pump and the line and what is the proper procedure to do this? How do I make sure not to dump to much fuel in and wet start the engine? Thanks Justin.

Justin you would disconnect the fuel line from the turbine and pump fuel into the cup using the pump test mode. I would suggest finding  a field where turbines are flown
and let someone help you. BTW where do you fly at?

JLink125 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/22/2011 11:55 PM)

Ok now I get what your saying, I thought you leave the fuel line connected so that's why I asked how do you know when to stop priming. Right now I have just started flying out at Gilman Springs (flown there once with my edf's) and I'll get a membership out there I think, it's nice and the people are cool, a few guys fly turbines out there, where do you fly?

ira d -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/23/2011 12:00 AM)

Gilman Springs also. Currently myself and three other guys fly turbines there.

JLink125 -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/23/2011 12:15 AM)

oh cool! I was going to fly tomorrow with mike if he's going, are any of you jet guys gonna be there too?

kevinthoele -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/23/2011 12:22 AM)

Needing some help with my K80 Mine will not start on first spool. It takes several times and then a big pop and sometimes it will finish start up sometimes not. I have adjusted the gas from 30 to 70 and no change in starts 5 points at a time. It usually ends in big propane fire and already distroyed one bypass. Once it does run it flys beautifully 5 in total in an Avonds F16. Problem is I have gone through 3 bottles of powermax and 4 glow plugs for 5 flights.

What set up are you guys using for start gas? Glow power etc.?

I love the way the engine runs when it works but it is tooo scary to start and I need help to correct the problem. Todd has given me some help but not there yet.

I would love to get this thing figured out as I want a Yellow F18 Twin with 2 of them in it.

Advise?

Kevin,
Sounds like perhaps a glow adjustment may be in order.... Pull the plug out and make sure there are two coils well teased out of the plug. Then adjust the glow power up two points and lower the gas to the lowest setting you are able to get clean ignition without a POP. If this still is an issue, please let me know....
Todd

kevinthoele -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/23/2011 4:16 AM)

It is currently at 2.2

I will change to 2.4 and try Sunday to start again. Starting with the gas at 35 and go up in 5 point amounts. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks

kevinthoele -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/23/2011 4:17 AM)

The manual mentions 2.6 to 2.7 is this way to high to start?

Im not sure who will be there tomorrow, I normally dont fly on sunday except sometime I may come out mid to late afternoon.

kevinthoele -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/24/2011 4:08 AM)

Todd,

The increase in the glow voltage to 2.3 lets me have light on first spool. I am having problem with big flames during start still. Need advise as to what to adjust next.

It now lights and begins running up but big flames are coming out the end of my tailpipe during start up. Once it goes to running the flames go away and all runs normal.

I have seen a few vids of start up and none of them have the big flame starts.

Thanks for helping me sort this out.

causeitflies -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/24/2011 4:40 AM)

Are the big flames from the gas lighting, or after the fuel ramps.
If from the gas, reduce this percentage. If flames are from the kero then reduce the pump start voltage.

kevinthoele -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/24/2011 4:45 AM)

Hard to tell as both are running after ignition. Any suggestions as to find out which to do first?

marquisvns -> RE: KingTech K-80 (1/24/2011 7:36 AM)

Kevin, sounds like you have way too much propane pumped into the chamber, K-80 and many other turbines don't need a whole lot to be light up. The ratio between propane and oxygen has to be proportional. The slightest will be able to get the chamber lit and it is then that you want to introduce a bit more to get it up to over 100C and then the fuel ramp will take over.

Are you using on board or external? I find external really is the way to go, nice and simple, plus you could really increase the propane when it is most needed, and that's after the initial ignition.

Barry
