I just noticed that my drawing actually does look like a normal airfoil, so I will try to remember to attach a better picture later when I´m near my own PC. :-)

John,

I've been following your build with interest. Always nice to see scratch or scaled up/down projects.

One comment regarding your 91 FX: they are widely rumored to cause the fuel to develop bubbles due to vibration at the needle valve assembly on the backplate. There was a revision of the engine by OS and the later ones were made with a standard backplate with a bolt on assembly for the needle valve. From factory it came assembled on to the backplate but was easily removed and attached to some other location on the airframe. This solved overheating and dead stick situations which were being widely reported. If you take a look at the current engine on Tower you'll see how the engine looks now.

Your engine appears to be of early vintage with the backplate and needle valve as part of the same assembly. It might be worth checking into a replacement backplate and needle valve so that you can locate the latter somewhere else on the model. I believe that a simple ply plate on the side of the cowl would be a fine location. It's just a matter of getting it off the engine case.

You might find this thread of interest:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147756

I have one too but I bought it from a friend and have yet to pick it up (a year later...). When I do later this summer, I'll probably do the same on mine if its of the older vintage.

Keep up the great work and thanks for your thread.

David.

Hi David,

It`s funny you should mention this, as the owner of the engine was telling me he was never quite happy with the way the engine ran in the previous aeroplane.

I`ll look into this some more and thanks for the heads up

@ John: I plan on sheeting the wing in one go with an already assembled and sanded sheet, but I have yet to decide my plan of attack.
This is the first buildup wing I have made since 1990 when I built my first model. Ever since that time I have been making foam wings which are, to me, both much easier and quicker to build. I actually wish I had done that here too.

At first I planned on making a fiberglass cowl using the "lost foam" technique, but I think I will try making a fixed wood cowl first. I should be able to mount the engine bolts through the hole in the plywood nosering when the spinner is removed. But as you say, there is not a lot of room so I may have to revise that plan...:-)

Foam wing would definetley be quicker and easier. i take it your to far into the build to change it ?

Very nice builds going here. I just started a Super Hots 60 from the Santich plans the other day. Doing the wing now and it is very easy and straightforward! I would like to see more on building up the wood cowl-I am building from plans alone....no instructions whatsoever so I am not 100% sure how to proceed with the cowling.

Thanks!

I`ll do a step by step on the wooden cowl if it will help.

If you have a small disc sander it will make life a lot easier.

What airfoil is the hots wing built around?

It seems to be a symetrical section with a touch of double reflex induced by the previously mentioned 'stuck on' ailerons, not sure how technicaly accurate this is.

Yeah, unfortunately I am. I´m ready to sheet the top of the wing after which it will be turned over and sheeted on the lower side.
But if it turns out to be twisted or otherwise unacceptable I may bite the bullet and build a new foam example. But for now I still hope that the builtup version is OK.

Looking forward to your cowl tutorial as I´m a little unsure of how to go about it myself.

Yeah no problem, it`l be next week though as i need the exact spinner to be used and it`s on it`s way from tower in the US to here in the UK, and it may take a week or so.

A few close up pictures of the wooden cowl on the small 'HOTS' to give you an idea of what to expect on the bigger one.

Someone asked about the airfoil used on the Hots, so here it is from my drawing, along with a few pictures showing the latest progress.
Hopefully I will be able to sheet the top of the wing tomorrow.

So....what do you guys think about a Saito .82 powering the .60 Super Hots? I have a spare 1.00 but also have a couple .82's as well that I'd like to use. I know that the 1.00 would be more than enough.....Opinions??

Flygilmore,

I flew my .60 Super Hots with a Super Tigre .90. I think it was just about right.
Have fun!

Todays progress.
Got the wing sheeted on the top side, and freed from the table. Hope I can get the lower side sheeted tomorrow so that I can check the fit on the fuselage.

The fin/tailplane assembly have also been glued to the fuselage and a "spine" for the rear top sheeting has been glued in.

I don´t know how effective the rudder is so I have made room for 45° throw which should be enough.

Trial fitting of the engine.
Looks like I´ll have some work cut out for me in trying to fit a balsa cowl around this lump. :-) Another option would be to make a fiberglass cowl. It´s quite a lot of work, but would give me the room to fit the engine I guess.

FANTASTIC !!!

Looking at your pictures, what i have is not a million miles away which is quite reasuring. Are the four cut outs on the top of the wing for servos ?

Coming on a treat and your not that far behind me.

I decided to weigh the basic wooden airframe and i`m well chuffed it came out at just under 3lb`s

The bottom of the wing covered.

I managed to finish the wing completely over the weekend but my phone has 'chucked' it, so no more pictures untill thursday i`m afraid.

The cutouts are for servos. The aileron/flaps will be mixed so they work together as ailerons in the normal mode, while in landing mode, the flaps will be lowered while the ailerons will be raised a bit to maximize the drag for short field landings.
If possible, the elevators will be set up as "ailvators", or as a deltaplane setup, working with the ailerons. That should boost the roll rate despite the quite small ailerons.

In it´s current state my example weighs around 5,3lb without engine, and I´m estimating a flying weight of around 12 to 13lb which should be OK for a 35cc engine. Your example, being a bit smaller and lighter, should fly well on your chosen 15cc glow.

Thats a interesting control set-up you describe there, i`ll be keen to hear how that works out.

Made a start on the colour trim on the wings while i`m waiting for the spinner to do the cowl.

Not a great picture but you can see the centre line i`m using to get the position of the stars on the blue stripe on the top of the wing.

A centre line through the circles for the stars parallel to the cord of the wing to ensure the point of the star in the correct place.

The angle of a 5 point star is 35deg, so i made another card template to make marking them out a lot easier.

I think i need a new PC, the amout of time it`s taking to upload images is getting silly.

The stars marked out ready for cutting with a new blade in the knife. i taped the two sides together face to face with masking tape so i could cut both at the same time.

All cut out and stuck on the wing.

Again, another card template cut out for the 'cockpit window' with the two pieces of solartrim face to face and cut in the one go.

My method of applying the large pieces of trim is to cut a fingers width out of the backing paper which allows you to move it into place and then rub on the exposed trim.
