John,
It's the 38.5% version, NIB. For what it's worth, I also have a 52/70 if anyone is interested (no fire sale, though).

And yes, would not mind selling the NIB 38.5% Starlet. Nearly have the other one done, currently fitting a sliding canopy at the moment. Did a laminated ply frame for the canopy ala Faye Stilley. Thinking perhaps to fly it before finishing out the cockpit - perhaps just do the panel for now. Have not found a reasonably priced 35-40% full-body pilot.

John, UPS shipping was $90 and I'd say that is preferable to Greyhound. I'll also double-box it and pack with plenty of dunnage to protect the contents. Let's split the Paypal fees and call it $500 even?

Yep, new-in-box and as original as they come. I'll tape down some of the contents and fill it with balloons etc to protect everything.

Just finished up this Corby Starlet model, I've had it on and off the front burner for four years now. Finally had the time.

Hope you like the photos. I just love the looks of this model, and I can't wait to see how she flies. It is the smaller version, and I powered it with a Saito .62 which I had on hand. Came out a little above the advertised weight of 7.0 Lbs, it came in at 7.6 Lbs, not too bad at all, and closer than most of them usually come out to the advertised weight. I had to add 7-1/2 ounces of noseweight, so she technically came in spot-on except for that little detail! I added a sullivan steerable gear to the back, which didn't help the weight.

Thanks, Marcus and Chris.

Chris, If I'd had a 70-size engine handy I would have used it, and that probably would have balanced out just right. I also had some problems with the DS821 servos I put into it, a number of them sheared their splines the first time I ran them back and forth. I ended up replacing the elevator servo with another servo I had handy, which was a JR8611A (overkill, but free since I had it handy), and I know that it's a heavy Metal Geared servo, probably twice as heavy as the DS821 was. I replaced the two sheared DS821s in the wings with two of the JR 126MGs, and those are also heavier than the 821s. Add that to the Sullivan steerable tail gear I used, and it doesn't take too many little items like that to require some lead in the nose.

I thought I did well only having to add the 7-1/2 ounces. The important thing is that she's well-built, with good servos I can depend on.

It's one of the few ARFs where I didn't feel I had to open the belly up and reinforce the tail section. That's a big plus to me.

Can't wait to see how she flies.

Jim

Jim I am sure it will fly very well.

I am figuring out how to get some spare time next year to build a Starlet, but a bigger one. Possibly using a DLE-111, which will allow for something between 50% and 60% scale.
The real one looks like a gown up RC model, the building technique is very similar so this will be as ambitious as any giant scale project. Main difficulties will be building the mold for the cowl and for the canopy.
Everything else is plain woodworking.

Congrats again and happy flying.

Marcus

TexasSkypilot, was curious about those DS821's. They've been very attractively priced second-hand and I've acquired a number of them, but have yet to encounter any problems. JR says their trouble with broken splines was the use of thread locker - was that your experience? Or did they just shear "unprovoked"?

Redball8,

Totally unprovoked. On one of them I had applied a small amount of CA to the screw threads, but that was 30 seconds to 1 minute before running it back and forth. That wouldn't have been enough time for any kind of plastic-attack to occur, and I know about a million guys who use CA on plastic-shaft servos to hold the screws. They do this because threadlockers like Locktite tell you on the bottle not to use them with plastics, as they can attack certain plastics.

I can't imagine that JR would put out servos that are adversely affected by CA glue!

I have anywhere from 6 to 12 other DS821 servos, and they all seem to work fine, with no issues. I was astounded when this batch just started shearing ther splines.

Kellermann,

Good luck with your giant project. I considered getting the 38% version, I was looking at models to use with my Syssa 30CC gassers. But to be honest with you, With my Giant Super Sportster and my GP Super Stearman in my stable, I just don't have the room for it, and I had to pass. I used to get every giant I liked, and then figure out later where I was going to keep it. That translated to a p***ed-off wife, because I was using our guest rooms and every inch of our garage, corners of my (our) office, etc. But it didn't end there. I bought an F-250 truck, a trailer, and then I had to store the trailer (and later on, when my company had me driving their truck, I had to store my truck). I figured out once that I had almost $50,000.00 into my RC stuff and transportation for my stuff. No wonder my wife was ticked off.

For the past two years, I've been divesting myself of every model and still-in-box ARF and kit I didn't have immediate plans for, because I took stock of the room I have, and figured out which ones I could keep and ultimately store/hang, etc. I'm at critical mass now, and as much as I'd like the 38% Corby, I know it would end up inside the house in one of the rooms, and that's ruled out now. On the other hand, I now have the right to tell my wife that my plane-shop (garage) isn't a place for her to get rid of stuff out of the house any longer. All additions must meet my approval, just as the planes stay out of the house. Things that used to end up sitting around are now trashed, and we get to use all of our space.

If you have room to build it, store it, ways to transport it, etc., then by all means, go for it. I'll live vicariously through your photos of the project!

Jim

Exactly! The truth is, the elevator didn't shear, but the rudder did. I moved the DS821 to the rudder, and put the metal-gear servo in for the elevator. No elevator, no plane. No rudder, no big deal.

I was very pro-DS821 up until this event. Just a step above what we used to call standard servos, and still reasonably priced. I won't be buying any until JR says what was wrong, and what they did to fix this. I never thought I'd say it, but for standard servos, I might have to go and buy some other brand, because I don't trust these.

The good news is that the ST126MGs are just a little more, and way more powerful, and metal gears don't fail. But they are heavier, and in a situation where ounces count, they're not the best substitution.
