Dave,

I shaped the foam to the proper size per the plans. Then I taped it onto the plane with painters tape. I covered it completely with the tape. I used the same foam that I made my stands for building with. Then I put Saran Cling Plus wrap over that and stretched it tight with the tape. Then I just wetted the wrap and laid a layer of 1 1/2 oz. cloth over that. I got it nice and wet so I would have some thickness and for final shaping. I didn't want to sand through the cloth. The reason they don't include it with the kit is cost for one and also they don't show the installation of a TW retract where you need a hollow space. Here are a couple pictures of the foam taped on before I covered it completely. Actually the Lost Foam method is supposed to be where you don't use the wrap and use acetone to disintegrate the foam. To messy for me so I made up my own method. The whole process took about 2 hours not including curing time.

Barry,

Thanks for the lesson! How hard would it be to add the tail hook notch?

It wouldn't be hard but it would weaken the thin glass. I'mm going to dremel out the area that you see when the hook is up and then just add a hook's end piece. It will look the same as if it were real.

Made some more good progress on the RDS system. I made some mounts based on the HEMS described in the RDS instruction manual. The aluminum brackets fit over the top of the servos and are held in place with 4-40 bolts and blind nuts. The mounts are 1/8 lite ply and spruce. They are epoxied directly to the bottom spar and are supported further in the front with basswood support stringers. All very strong, light and simple. It will become even stronger after sheeting. The HEMS mount provides me with about 1/2" of fore/aft adjustment to perfectly dial in the RDS "sweet spot". I replaced the stock servos I had in there with digital sport servos. (72 oz/in BB) I'm moving on to the flap servo mounts next.

I'm really looking forward to see how this works out. I picked up the RDS setup for my upcoming P-51B project. If it works out well, I have a number of 60 sized projects I'd like to use it with.

I tried something extra, I mounted my rear retract today but added a limited ability to take a punch from a normally solid mount. I tried different springs and there positions to let it move but control it's arc against the cylinder. I just don't have Lukes and others talent to build a retract with a spring into it so I opted for this, cause it was simple and replaceable. I mounted the slave cylinder toward the wing to keep as much weight as I could forward. Thanks for posting the weight warnings to keep it light in the tail. I have a RCV 120 to hang out front which is going to be nose heavy otherwise one should build over the wing for balance. Rocketman I think said one extra ounce in the rear needs three added to the front.

I believe it's more than 3:1 ratio

I've completed final fitting and testing of my Robart retracts and custom tail retract. Here's a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dC-YJRmQbM

The lighting was bad so it's a little hard to see the tail wheel.
I have the flap servos installed so I'm going to sheet the wing bottom next I think. I also need to start bracing the fuse front so I can carve out the cowl flap area. I'm cruising along pretty good.

We're finally getting back in the saddle after taking the whole summer off from working on this build. Did some more work on the bottom of the fuselage front. We've looked at a number of different options for using the Keleo exhaust, but to match the full scale lines, we would end up having to rebuild the exit pipes. I think we are going to use it as-is and try to get as close as possible working around the shortcomings. Here are the drawings we're working from on the fuse front - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5856514 . We also laid up the glass for the aft bottom section of the fuse. This section will remain detachable until the tailwheel doors are cut out, hinged and actuated to our satisfaction. Everything is at an ugly duckling stage at this moment, but it felt good to spend a few hours in the shop.

Tom, great to hear, many will be following along as the mods progress on this thread.

I'm glued; not wrapped to tight but I'm glued.

Barely enough progress tonight to be worth taking a picture of. Cut the aft section of the fuselage bottom away from the mold and rough sanded it. The photo is the initial dry fit. I'm actually pretty excited about making the tailwheel doors. Compared to the beating I've taken on some of the mods like the cowl flaps, this should go pretty quick and easy.

I don't know if this was addressed already in this thread and if it was, this may a bit redundant. Top Flite warbirds which are set at 0,0,0 are typically set at 2,2,2 if you look at the actual center line of the airplane so they will fly level at cruise speed. Now I have not checked this on the Corsair personally but thats the way the P-40 is set up..You may find that the center line on the model is different then the one on the real plane so your measurements may be invalid. Just food for thought.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll make sure to measure from the true centerline when marking gear doors and panel lines. Won' t matter on the fiberglass bit since I'm going to fully blend it in. I couldn't find a convenient panel line in order to make it removable.
