I'm going to build my sliding canopy rails at this point. I did it after the fuse was fully sheeted on my P-47 build and it was harder than it needed to be. I'm really liking this Dremel router table with a cutoff wheel. We used it earlier to cut out the cowl flaps. Here I'm using it to slot 1/8 brass square stock to make the rails. I picked up a piece of HO scale train track to make a slider on the canopy frame. This is a hybrid of what Luke did on his Royal Corsair build and on his CMP Hellcat build. Sliding canopy has been covered to death on the forum, but I thought the Dremel tool was cool. I'll post after pics shortly.

Here's the link to the Dremel Shaper Table at Tower. I'll edit this later tonight and add some picks of the rails soldered to the brass backing that will get glued to the inside of the canopy if I get that far.

SMUGator,
My Dremel is a 400 series and Tower says it only goes up to the 395 series. I got my Dremel in 2004. Do you think it will still work with the table? I'm going to order one if it will. What Dremel do you have?

I don't have an opinion on compatibility, so you should probably e-mail Dremel or Tower on that question. The Dremel that I'm using in the router table is probably at least 7-8 years old.

SMUGator,
I called up Dremel here in Wisco and they are sending me the table with the adapter that will make the 400 series work with it. Thanks for the info. I meant to ask you when you were cutting the cowling where you got that thing.
I was at an airshow yesterday at New Garden Aviation (Matt Chapman's home field). They had the "Marine's Dream" Corsair there and I climbed all around it and got almost 100 pictures of it. It seems to be a Goodyear model FG1-D. Attached are a few samples. If anyone is looking for details on a particular part of the aircraft, let me know and I'll see what I have. I also took video of it when the pilot started it, rolled out on the ramp, opened the wings and flew it around. I was so close to it, that if he had lowered the wings, I would have been knocked in the head with the left wing tip. I had goosebumps for the rest of the day and I can't wait to finish and fly my model!

How will the rail work?
cheers Bob T
Cool pics, Mystar! It's always fun to be able to put your hands on these awesome airplanes!
Got a little more work done tonight on the sliding canopy. The HO train track rails are soldered onto a brass backplate. The holes are there to facilitate gluing to the inside of the canopy with RC 56. It's just dry fit at this point but hopefully the pics will give you an idea of where I'm headed. Again, I can't take credit for this design. Luke covered it in detail. You can recognize my designs. They are the ones that only work on the 3rd try if at all.

Those are real clear pictures - do you have any close-ups that show the fit of the cooling gills to the cowl? I'm intrigued to see if there is much of a gap opens up between the front (hinge line) of each gill and the edge of the cowl because of the curve in each. The fit looks so good in most photos but I think it will be hard to get a good fit on the model.

Hey,
Thanks for the nice clear pictures of the sliding canopy. I have been wondering whose method I would use. Let us all know how well it slides and if it would work with a medium torque mini servo. I'm making mine servo operated on my 1/4 scale.
