Interesting question. It looks to me like the scale drawings are somewhere between 90-100 degrees. If it makes you feel better, the Sierra gear are also 100 degrees. It should definitely help with ground handling.

So in a gear down position they are angled slightly (seems to be about 10 degrees) forward? Past parallel with the main spar?

Falling behind schedule,

I thought that we would almost finis these planes at about the same time Tom. But with the rib areas I am way behind you. I can't even see your dust anymore. Are you going to do the ribs?
This is my last simulated rib area thank God!

I'll be simulating ribs, but doing it a little less dramatically using primer to build them up. I posted the link to Tom Pierce's thread somewhere, but I don't feel like looking for it right now. I got in a fight with the wife and am in a bad mood. Chris is back from his holiday in the Ukraine, so it was nice to have some company in the shop tonight. We finshed up the switch panel, the remainder of the strip planking on the fuse top and finally popped the fuse top off the glass. I also had to adjust my canopy rails a little bit to get the canopy halves to meet flush. Don't follow the stringer with your forward rails. They slope downward from back to front.

acesfrenchy,

I wish I had. The rib areas are drawn on the sheeting and then I tape the edges to prevent going to far when sanding. They are there as a guide. I sand the inside down 1/64" and then cut 1/64" plywood into 1/8" wide strips to make the ribs. After that I fill the whole area with thinned down lite spackling and let it dry for 3 days. Then I sand the area between the ribs into a concave shape. It's about a 2 week project for each rib area. This is the last one I have to do. It's taped and ready for sanding down the entire inside area. I just don't have the motivation anymore on this one mod to stay at it very long. If I stuck with it like the first and second areas it would only take about 5 days. The concave shape between the ribs will give it a sag effect for the glass, so it looks like fabric. I hope I explained that clearly. If you have a lot of patience do it but if you don't try the primer method. I don't know how SMUGator is going to make that look the same but I will wait and see. If it looks good the way he is going to do it I will try that on my Don Smith 120" WS 1/4 Scale F4U-1D Corsair. Thats my next build if I ever get this one done. I've been working on this build for 5 months and haven't even got the wing done. The fuselage is still waiting to be built.

Gibbs,

You could always do what I did when I got tired of working the wing. I found a convenient place to stop and set it aside to build the fuse. My patience was much restored by the time I got back to it. The fuse is a quick build, depending on what, and how, you're going to mod it, of course!!

tessex,

I always finish one before starting the other. Plus when I get to the wing saddle I have to at least have the wing sheeted. Nice thought though. I guess everyone builds in there own way. I'm just old fashioned and determined. This is my determined look!!! .

You guys who are hiding the hinge lines with 1/64th ply. How do you still get the range of motion on the control surface? The ply sticks out and interferes with it. (especially the rudder where the strips are on both sides.

This is just kinda stuck in place after coming back from a party where a lot of red wine was consumed, but hopefully it will give you an idea. But if you read the thread, you know that we didn't do our rudder hinging or build by the plan.

Tom,

What did you use for hinging? I don't think I saw that part or I missed it. Could you show me a picture of what you used? Also payment sent yesterday.

Thanks,

Barry

Unfortunately we didn't shoot any photos of the hinges on the rudder or elevator. The hinges are G-10 with a piece of 2-56 rod as a hinge pin/torque rod.

Tom,

What is a G-10 and could you just explain how you did it in detail. Maybe if you drew a scetch that would help me a lot if you are willing to go to that effort. I need help here. I wan't to hide all the hinges and the horns on my 1/4 scale. On the 1/8th I just want to hide the surface lines.

Help me Tom,

Thanks a bunch,

Barry

hey Tom,

are you gonna leave your rudder the way it is? not fabric covered with the ribs visible?

Hey Barry,

I tried to upload pics from the Corsair book to help you with the light system, not very clear tho... if you need more info, let me know, that book is full of detail.
As for my ribs on the wing I will go with the build up primer, I let you know how it turns out.

Pascal.
