I figure that it won't be too long until someone says, "wow, isn't it heavy to build solid elevators and rudder?" To be honest, I'm kind-of interested to know the exact weight difference too. I was on my way to the post office, so I took the vertical fin/ruddder assembly and the stab elevator assembly and dropped them on the postal scale. Everything is hinged, actuated, shrouded and ready to glass. Weights are:

Fin/Rudder - 1.90 oz
Stab/Elevator - 5.30 oz

If anyone else is at a similar point in the build, I'd be curious to know what those assemblies weigh when built, actuated and hinged "by the book."

Tom,

I got you now. I'll do a mock up and check it out. It sounds like it should work fine. When did you get your engineering degree!!! Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know on the weights soon.

Made a little more progress this evening. Chris finished assembing the scale tailwheel and I made the extra formers needed for the tailwheel assembly and fitted the air tank. As you can see, we still have to modify former 10 some more to get the tailwheel to retract properly. Playing with the retraction mechanism for the first time was pretty cool. Thanks Luke!

Hi SMUGator,
I have been following this forum since I started my TF Corsair. I find it wonderfull that everone is willing to share their idea's and comments as well.
Since I've started, I believe that I'm a going to want to attempt the rear wheel retract. However, I have seen these retractable assemblies and am wondering if you or anyone has some dimensional drawings that you or someone would be willing to share?
I assume that these will work on a pull- pull system,correct? If so, how do you control the rudder, since the plans have the rudder feed coming off the rear wheel assembly?
Any input would be greatly apperiated.

I did get drawings from Luke (aka Dionysusbacchus, Bentmetal, and Adonis) last year, but agreed not to repost them. He has been around a bit lately, so perhaps he would be willing to share. The tailwheel is a pull-pull set-up. I'll be adding a separate independent pushrod for the rudder.

I had a little bit of time to spend on linkages tonight. The rudder is pure vanilla and much more bulletproof than the TF set-up which is a major PITA to set-up and a nightmare to service. The bit hanging off the torque rod is a guide that will get glued to the back of F-10 to add some lateral stability. The horn is just made from 1/8 brass tubing. All very simple.

Question, would it be possible to control the rudder off the same bell crank assembly, thus elimanting one push rod. Or do you think that this is getting back to TF's configuration?

Hi Sam,

I do think that a bellcrank on the pull-pull is the way to go. It's interesting that you ask that question as I was just playing with the geometry last night. I think I'm going to mount the bellcrank near the bottom of the fuselage just aft of the wing saddle. The pull-pull lines will be heavy monofilament or spiderwire, so they can just go slack in the belly and stay out of the way when the tailwheel retracts. I think it would be possible to do with a single bellcrank, but my initial feel is to go with two pushrods off the rudder servo to keep the linkages as linear and simple/serviceable as possible.

here is some pic of the ribs and drawing of the wing panels. I tried the "F. Pierce" method, using primer. I still have to clean and sand them, and do a last coat of primer.

More progress on the scale tailwheel linkages. I get grief from a few of my buddies that I'm always trying to McGyver things together to save $2 or a trip to the hobby store. Well, they're right. I didn't have a stock bellcrank lying around, so I fabbed one up out of a servo arm and a leftover bearing from a set of Robart wheels. That's the first couple of photos.
