The things we tried to do here to get the wings to mate with the belly pan properly and hide the scale hinges didn't work out well. The belly pan ended up looking like a pregnant guppy. So I sawed it off and did it with the stock ribs. The TopFlite design is so flawed in this area that I don't think I can fix it. I'll end up with a little bit of the hinge visible. I'll post some photos when I get it re-planked.

I'm glad I redid the belly pan. It doesn't approach scale looking, but I think you would have to recut 3/4 of the fuse formers to get it right. It's a little depressing to have the 1/6 enlarged Royal plans hanging on the wall and to compare those outlines to the TopFlite. In any case, I'm fairly happy with how the hinging of the inner flap worked out at the belly pan. I think I'll go ahead and extend that flap a little bit to fair it into the fuselage a little better and hide most of that hinge. I'm thinking I'll just work something up out of the balsa stock TF sent for the flaps and ailerons. It looks a little rough in the photos since I just added a little microballoon mix to blend a couple of spots a little better.

I thought I would also put in a little bit of a plug here for the "Tubig sander." I haven't seen Tim aka tubig post over here too much lately. I think he spends most of his time on RCSB now. A few years ago, he posted this idea for a sander to make the grooves to inset the 1/64 ply hinge gap covers. I made mine from a bit of landing gear rail that I didn't use on on one project or another. For the Corsair wing, I had to cut off a little bit and make a mini sander to go around some of the curved edges. I think the photos turned out a little bright, but these things make perfect slots for the hinge gap fairings. On a straight wing, they work like magic. Hope it comes through in the photos.

Tom,

Thanks for that last post!! I've thought about putting covers on my Corsair like this, but wasn't sure about how to go about it. This looks great! Will have to look at retrofitting mine.

Hi Tom,

I only seem to use the little "tubig sander" once or twice a year, but it is one of my prized possessions and has a special place so that it doesn't get lost. Tim, if you are still following these forums, give yourself a nice pat on the back from me!

I didn't get around to glassing this weekend, as I got caught up doing some other things. I only got the hinge gap covers on the wing installed. I had my postal scale out, so I decided to see where I am on all-up weight. Missing only the receiver and battery and main gear door assemblies, I'm at 8lbs 7.4 oz prior to glassing and painting.

It breaks out to:
Airframe - 4 lbs 5.8 oz
Cowl with operational flap assembly - 9.8 oz
Engine and prop - 2 lbs 10 oz (that RCV is heavy)
Retracts and wheels - 13.8 oz

If we can do a good job with the glass and paint, I feel good about coming in under 11 lbs all-up. I'll be interested to see how much each of those steps adds to the airframe weight. I feel good that all of the significant weight we've added is in the nose.

Has anyone ever come across a website that sells or can make scale looking wheels? I've haven't seen a single tire on the market that looks exactly like the hub thats on a corsair. Plus some of the tires that do come close, wouldn't fit because they are too wide. I'm open to suggestions

Does not loving my model that much make me a bad person?

Hi Michael,
Wow, those are some really fine looking wheels. I do believe either Corsair Jock or SMU Gator had determined that 4" would be very close to scale. However, they found that most wheels would be too wide, and close to being too large of a diameter at 4". I believe, and don't hold me to it, that they came up with the size of 3 3/4"diameter.
Do you think AAA would come out and fix a flat at those rates? LOL

Yeah I've come across those already. They dont look scale IMO and they are pricey to begin with. The price isn't a deal breaker, but if I'm going to drop that kind of cash, they better look like a real tire. I already had that site bookmarked and planned on contacting them at a later time if I couldn't find any ready made alternatives.

Here is a pic of what a corsair rim looks like. I figured I'd have to contact a machine shop and have something made and perform surgery on a premade set of tires for the rubber part.

Its really driving me nuts all these sites saying "yeah we carry scale stuff" and when you do a real one to one comparison, they aren't even close.

The ones from Sierra Giant are exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, they don't make them small enough. I'll probably add them to the list of places I'll contact to see if they'd a smaller set. It seems insane to pay $200.00+ bucks for a set of tires, but I'm sitting here thinking about all the detail I'm adding to mine and how crappy its going to look sitting on the ground with some plastic foam tire. I'm not saying that its bad for anyone else, I'm just looking to enter this plane in competitions.

No, not in WWII they didn't - you are looking at a Korea era rim.

That is not a fact in our case. We advertise scale and back it up - you can check documentation against 99% of our scale line and will find they are modeled after a specific version and researched thoroughly. You can't manufacture every version for every aircraft - in some cases there are a dozen different wheels. In fact new tooling for the Corsair coming out this summer will also have scale brake detail on the strut side like we offer on many sets.

We have made the version of wheel you show before - and not one wanted them - not enough demand. Actual Museum Corsair with WWII wheel is below.
