Default Ziroli Panther

Now that my F-16 is finished I thought I'd start on my next project, a Ziroli Panther. I bought the fiberglass fuse that was for sale in themarket place.

Dementions of the Panther:
Scale - 1/6th
Wingspan - 72 inches
Length - 72 inches
Projected weight -20 to 22 pounds (ready to fly)
Power System - Schubeler DS-77 HST (18 to 20pounds of thrust)

Ispent the morning driving around to the local hobby shops collecting wood (it's getting hard to find wood anymore). Ispent the afternoon cutting out the fuse formers. Istill need to cut the lightening holes. For size comparison, there's a couple of photos of the 1/6th scale Panther fuse next to the 1/8th scale Sky Master F-16,

Kirk

Hi Kirk,
Looking at your Panther makes me envious!
I built mine from scratch ...could really have used a fiber glass fuse.....
Good luck with your project

Kirk,

Can't tell you how this makes me sick!!! LOL. I have been building one, off and on for the last 10 years or so and it is all built up. I have it ready to glass finally and I, like any one else who's built one can testify as to how much work is involved. The glass fuse was not available when I started mine. I have heard nothing but great things about this airplane. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I have built one from the glass fuse you have. I have the details on my web site. Google my name is easiest way to get there.

The top portion of the rudder fin on the fuse you have is wrong. It has a hook effect at the front top of the glass. If not fixed it will make a big bump in the leading edge of the fin where the glass and the balsa builtup fin meet. it needs to be cut off and straightend.
If you have not glued the front section to the main fuse yet, don't. Make it removable for access to your batteries. otherwise it will be hard to get everything in the nose that needs to go there, past the nose gear and airtanks.

Thanks Pete. I like your Panther. Ifollowed thebuild thread a couple of years ago. I've always wanted to build the Ziroli Panther but the thought of strip planking the fuse always gave me pause.

Thanks Nick. I like the detail on your Panther. I plan to do the same. Is your cockpit scratch built or a kit?

Thanks Mike. I know what you mean. I don't have the time to do the strip planking. Good luck on the completion of your build.

Ziroli must have sold a fiberglass fuse for the Panther at one time. The Ziroliplans that came with this fuse included a seperatetemplate sheetfor the fuse formers as well as the regular builtup plans.

Today I ordered the laser cut short kit from Laser Design Services. The cost of the short kit was worth the time saved not having to cut out the rest of the parts.

Looks like a great choice. I've built a couple of RBC Panthers and I swore off ever planking again after those

I wonder how hard it would be to convert this into a Cougar

Thanks Ken. Good to hear from you. Several years ago I built the RBC Yak-23. After that build, I had my share of planking.

My cockpit was scratch built. I scratch built another one for my PST panther, which is based on the ZIroli plans. Both also have sliding canopys that work from the transmitter....................

A little more progress. I laminated carbon fiber to the lite ply formers to give them more strength for very little weight gain.

Kirk,
Wow, you've come full circle....seems like forever ago you built a beautiful aeronaut panther. Can't wait to see how this one shapes up. I've always liked the panter and thought ziroli had the size bang on.
Did you laminate the ply with CF cloth in a press, or did you use something like the dragon-plate pre-made sheets on a sheet of ply before cutting? Looks nice.
