I had posted this in the incorrect fourm on the gas side - I hope the mods can delete the first thread and go with this one:  http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9652078/anchors_9652078/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9652078

First time poster - long time lurker. Today I had a very unique failure of the PZ P-51 BL. It advertized itself in the following ways. I was doing some pretty hard 3D and when I went to put in a replacement battery, the wing was holding on by a prayer.

Thinking the screw  was bad, I removed the old one and threw a new one in, which secured it again to the fuselage. What happened afterwards was nothing short of horrific. Was out with my brother and his wife just zipping along, when at about 50 feet up there was a loud bang. The wings separated at the leading edge gap at the fuselage and floated down
Into a tree line - which happened to be a swamp.

The fuselage was now full tail boogie straight down and buried itself 2 inched into the wet earth. The recovery effort consisted of sticks. 10" bricks, frisbees, soccer balls, but finally the wind felt pity and set it loose. Happy Saturday to everyone.

Caution to those who are not familiar with the way New Yorkers speak, with certain words used as commas: these are videos of the crash and recovery effort.

The last video is a post mortum of the failed part which caused the crash. If this is not a known failure mode, I hope it raises awareness that it is. This came from a brand new wing with 10 flights on it. The previous wing had hundreds of flights on it before I had it retired. The specific part is the plastic collar insert that runs through the front of the wing with the screw that goes into the fuselage. What happened in this case, the collar pulled loose from its mounting - and remained firmly attached to the fuselage. The wing, now with nothing to support it - became part of the project "get out and walk", with the fuselage burying itself at around 80 mph face first - and the wing floating down undamaged - minus the collar.

Wolf, thank you for sharing your experiences. My web system won't play your movies. Could you show more still pictures of the flawed system? A little Carbon Fiber tow material should be able to fix the problem area.

I just bought a new back up GUNFIGHTER and was very thrilled to find it weighed 2 ounces less than my original version after some structural improvements that did not include addressing the problem you discovered.

I love to use this airplane to introduce potential new fighter pilot enthusiasts to PF warbirds. Please help me get it right.

Your writing style ads color and fun to the activity. Don't let PC squash your variety of inspirational fun.

I've seen that one before, but I also now have a similar failure to add....

Failure mode created by fliying full speed (approx. 100mph) and flipping over into inverted flight.  At that time, wing immediately separated from fuselage and fluttered safely down to the field, while fuselage performed pretty good imitation of a really high-powered lawn dart and traveled another 150 yards or so before burying itself about 4 inches deep into the grass.  (airplane specs:  Rimfire .15 motor, Phoenix Ice 60 ESC, 4S 2650maH 40C (80C burst - 202A!!) battery, APC 9x7.5E prop, main wing stiffened by gluing 3 stock spars together and epoxying into stock location, H stab stiffened with laminated brace made of 1/32" light ply)  I just keep coming up with new and interesting ways to break this plane, then improving it and trying again at a higher rate.  Ultimate "goal" is to rip wings off in level standard flight (wonder how fast it'll have to go to do that?)

    iborsteins,
Hard to believe you found the Revell 1/72nd 3-view to make your paint scheme! We used to hate that model as kids, it was the most inaccurate P-51 plastic ever produced. Brings back memories.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
    Chris...
