Hello,

Just wondering if any new warbird kits were displayed at the Toledo Show.

I am trying to decide on my next warbird and am hoping Top Flite has a new giant scale product in the works.

The Yellow P-40 fuselage was on display and it looked great. It was all fiberglass with loads of detail and panel lines molded in. It looked better than the Ziroli P-40 fuselage although it is a little smaller. I believe the Yellow will be 84" span while the Ziroli is 94" span.

The fuselage is made the same way that the Yellow F-16 and F-18 Twin were made. Fiberlass cloth, carbon fiber reinforcments, installed fuselage formers, and gray coating. Looks good.

Yellow said that the P-40 should be available in July 2002.

I asked around at the TopFlite/GP booth and no one knew (or was saying) anything about a new warbird kit in the works. You would think with all of the interest that they could pursue a Hellcat or possibly an ME-109 kit in the GOld Edition line, but alas they either don't seem too interested in doing so, or do not have the expertise. I don't believe the latter to be the truth.

I saw the Century Jet 100" Corsair and it looked very nice and it was getting a lot of attention from the crowd. CJ should sell a lot of them. The one they had on display, I believe, had a Quadra 75 in it but I'm not totally sure. I grabbed the price list from the CJ counter if anyone is interested, but I'm sure CJ has this info on their website.

Thanks for the updates guys. Yes you would think Top Flite would come out with a few more warbirds or at least retool the Zero and Bearcat of red box fame. That hollywood zero was lame but the old (real) Zero was very popular and who doesn't love the Bearcat?

I wasn't at Toledo so can't comment on what's coming. However if you want to do a really scale P-40 stay away from the Ziroli. Its got some outline problems particularly in the top view and the way the wing fillet meets the fuse, especially on the glass fuse.

Pica was showing off their new 1/8 corsair. It looked real nice for a 60 size and they stated it will build faster and lighter then Top Flight's corsair.

I examined this one pretty closely. It looks pretty good as most of century planes do. I think the panel lines are a bit too wide. The wings are skins of glass with a full length spar glued in. For some reason when this type of construction is used the builders just gloop a bunch of glue in and hope for the best. Needless to say it looks sloppy. I think I would try to fix this if it were mine. The center section of the wing is built the same way with a more substantial spar, and a bunch more dripping glue. It has a deep cutout in the spar for the gear leg which either cracked on the test plane or they were trying to prevent it from cracking on this one. The overlays used were strong enough but the craftsmanship is not the best. The outer panels are attached to the center section with an aluminum channel and a flat blade setup that is probably strong enough. I would make sure however. You have to cut out the gear door area in the wings and replace it with special ones supplied in the kit. For a plane this big I would think the doors would have a nice scale liner but these were just plain molded sheet. The doors worked ok. The Tail wheel and bulkhead are very heavy. You have to install the bulkhead yourself. Because of this weight so far back, it must be balanced with a very large weight in the nose. The guy said the plane weighed 36 pounds so it is not all that heavy. I think the engine was a 4.2 or 5.8. The fuselage was well done and very strong. The fin is molded in and again the interior structure is not what I would expect for the price. He had a nice scale prop but the hub was too small Otherwise not a bad plane, abit pricey but you could get away with out paint if you wanted.

Fell in love with the Hanger 9 60 size P-51 ARF. Looks real nice and will be released the end of the month. Plane comes with 5 colors of Ultrakote, interior, retracts installed for $259.00. Hard to build for that price. Came home and ordered one through my local hobby shop.

i looked at the hangar 9 p51 and from what i could see it looked pretty good. i couldn't see the retracts very well because they had it hung on the wall so you couldn't move it. but they looked only fair. they seemed a little small, and the wires looked like 5/32 or so, which is small in my opinion for a 60 size. so i would be careful with these gear.

the pica corsair is definitely a sport corsair, and it looked like it should build quicker than the top flite. however it did not have the bent gull in the wing- the wing has a sharp bend there instead of the gradual bend the full size corsair has. however you might be able to bash this a bit to add a bend there, but the flaps are 2 piece flaps not 3 piece. its designed for century jet retracts which i won't use so this pretty well rules out this plane for me.
