red66Baron -> 5 channel Rx; 2 independent ailerons (7/18/2003 2:24:17 AM)

Hi,

(I am somewhat new around here, so I first posted this in RC-servos etc not in this Hitec group; sorry for the x-post).

I just got a Hitec Eclipse 7 Transmitter.

I have an electric soaring plane with rudder, elevator, ESC (channel 3), left aileron and right aileron. This means I need the Acrobatic setup on the Eclipse 7, not the Heli or the Soaring setup.

In Acrobatic, according to the Eclipse 7 handbook one of the 2 aileron servos must be on channel 6 (channel 5 is for landing gear).

Can I somehow finagle the Eclipse 7 (via mixers maybe?) to address the one aileron servo on channel 5 - thus getting away with a 5 channel receiver, rather than having to buy 6 channel receivers with an unused channel 5?

thanks,

dm

Welcome!

You can set it up in GLID mode with the 5 channel for ailerons but you will only be able to have an on/off switch for the motor. If you want variable throttle then you will need to set it up in ACRO mode but you will need at least a 6 channel RX.

Mike.

red66Baron -> gear switch? (7/19/2003 6:39:46 AM)

Thanks Mike,

OK I tried that. The ESC works well when I am in ACRO mode and control it over Rx channel 5. I then go to GLID mode and try to control the same ESC over channel 3 by moving the GEAR switch forward. Nothing.... Any suggestions?

thanks.

Channel 3 is the Rudder D/R switch in GLID mode.

red66Baron -> still drawing a blank (7/23/2003 8:08:40 PM)

Mike

sorry but I am still drawing a blank.
Let me summarize:
1. the Eclipse 7 is in GLID mode
2. the ESC is connected to Rx channel 3
3. all components (ESC, Rx, Tx, etc work in ACRO mode when I switched there)
4. you say that channel 3 is on the Rudder D/R switch (tried that, nothing)
5. manual says that in GLID mode channel 3 is on the GEAR switch (tried that, nothing)

so net net:
the prop does not run

I looked if I have to program either the GEAR or the RUDDER D/R switch to make it move channel 3; cant find anything to that extend in the manual.

I am totally stumped now.

I'm sorry... I don't use the GLID mode for powered gliders and my memory failed me. I was close though, but it's the elevator D/R switch not the rudder D/R.

Mike.

red66Baron -> elevator (7/23/2003 9:27:25 PM)

Mike,

I think I played with that one too. Does it "just work" or does the ELEVATOR D/R switch need programming to control channel 3?

red66Baron -> tried again (7/24/2003 4:19:50 AM)

I just tried it again and the elevator D?R switch does exactly that: switches dual rate on and off on the elevator but does nothing to the ESC on channel 3. how do you tell the eclipse to use that switch for channel 3 rather than for a D/R change?

MikeMayberry -> 5 channel Rx; 2 independent ailerons (7/24/2003 5:28:32 AM)

It should just work... plug a servo into channel #3 and see if it works.

red66Baron -> getting closer (7/24/2003 6:24:13 AM)

thanks Mike,

now we are getting closer. I plugged a servo into Rx channel 3 while putting the ESC on channel 5. The ELEVATOR D/R switch clearly throws the servo on channel 3. The aileron stick controls the ESC on channel 5!

Pull out the servo on 3, plug the ESC back in. Nothing. I assume the ESC does not like the on/off switch? May be I need an on/off type ESC rather than a proportional one? (though the servo was proportional and did go from one end to the other).

Try setting the EPA's on CH3 to 125%

red66Baron -> 5 channel Rx; 2 independent ailerons (7/25/2003 5:46:53 AM)

Ok, thanks for the hint. Tried that; EPA now for channel 3 at 125%. Motor does not move.

Are you sure it will work with a proportional ESC rather than an on/off switch?

MikeMayberry -> 5 channel Rx; 2 independent ailerons (7/25/2003 8:23:27 PM)

That would make so difference. It should have the same travel as the stick would. Check the travel with the servo and see if it is reduced. If it is then maybe the ESC won't arm itself. What ESC are you using?

Mike.

between EPA and channel reversing and some other poking it finally worked. Thanks for sticking with me thru this.
