Looking for appropriate material for wing struts. "V" struts, not cabanes. Hope to find something of appropriate size and shape for a 1/4 scale aircraft. Aluminum, spruce, bass or whatever. Will have to be about 26" long minimum.

Woof,

I was in need of spruce also. One of the moderators gave me this link. Hope it helps. They sell spruce cut to dimensions by the foot.

They had exactly what I needed for a 40% I'm building.

Spruce has been the standard for areas requiring structural strength for may years. However, good Spruce is getting harder to find and more expensive.

So it came as a surprise to me that Basswood is almost identical to Spruce in it's load carrying ability. I've been using Basswood instead of Spruce for spars and wings struts in my giants (including a 1/3 scale Nelitz Cub) for many years.
There's a chart I saw somewhere that compares the two in various ways and, again, they are almost identical in the ways that are important to us.

The only trick is that, just like with Spruce, you want to pay attention to finding clear material with straight grain.
And unlike Spruce, it's a lot easier to find and a heckuva lot cheaper too.

Hey what about molding fiberglass around foam? Or balsa? I use shaped aluminum Im thinking maybe 26" of aluminum could be unnecessarily heavy, same goes for spruce, when glass and carbon fiber are options now days. Its just an idea Ive thought about trying myself. Just havent done it yet!

If you're worried about the grain runout or other wood quality issues with spruce or bass or whatever then just use it as the fairing for a music wire core that properley takes the tensile stress.

Use two 1/2 thicknesses with the wire at the 1/4 chord point. Bend the eyes into the ends and solder as required or use something a little heavier and solder over a 3 or 4 inch length to a bicycle spoke to accept a 2-56 clevis. Other options should be presenting themselves by now if I haven't hit the nail on the head.

Wire take tremendous tensile loads but in compression it'll be the wood that will prevent it collapsing so design accordingly.

Check the Sea Commander site. We make and sell structural streamlined aluminum tubing. It is made from aircraft grade 6061-T6,with .035 wall. It's much stronger and lighter than most other material on the market.
