My most memorable near miss was about 10 years ago with a Goldberg Sophisticated Lady. I used to live in Maine right by the ocean, so a nearby beach and cove was the only large open area without trees. I had flown here many times before with no problems. I go and do the usual pre-flight, everything good. Fire up the old .049 on the power pod and prepare for launch. As I give it a hearty toss, my thumb brushed the switch for the receiver. Good thing I had it trimmed nose up! It actually flew beautifully hands off, making large, lazy climbing circles to the left. I just kept watching, waiting for the engine to stop. It had gained a couple hundred feet of altitude before the engine quit. Fortunately it had just turned towards shore as the engine died. I watched it slowly descend as it came back in, just hoping it would stay out of the water. It came cruising over the beach about 30 feet high, now headed for a marshy area. It ended up hanging itself by a wingtip from a sapling, dangling over some water. Quite an impressive thing to have watched, and lucky to have the plane back with only a few small rips in the covering. The plane survived several more years until it was retired and given to someone else just getting into R/C.

Well, you'd think that I had enough sense to move it after that, but I didn't. About a month later I gave it a toss, once again hitting the switch on the receiver. This time the engine quite about 2 seconds later, giving me a cold swim 50' out to get it. Pulled all the electronics out and washed them with fresh water, followed by WD-40. Only lost one servo. The plane was just fine after dying out. After that incident I decided to move the switch.

I always make sure the switch is on in the rear position on all my planes for just this reason!
