My first flight ended in a minor crash landing also(over shot the runway).I had no one to help me launch or nothing,so I did it myself. It really was a rush and I was shaking for a good while after I had landed.Once you get comfortable with it and get that engine on the pipe you can really have some fast fun.

My fairly stock WEBRA 50 blew up either a 8x9 or 8x10 APC prop on a bench run, so do take care.

I have about 15 flights on my Magnum with a Jett 50 turning a 8.5X8.5 pylon prop. Estimated speed about 150 based on lap time around the field. The plane sure turns heads, and quickly at that. People just can't believe how fast it is. I use a buddy to launch because with the pylon prop it takes a second or two to start flying.

Good luck with any of yours.

Nick

I have been trying an APC 9x9 on my OS AX .46 powered magnum with an 8.5cc tuned pipe. I am getting a static rpm of around 16,200 with 15% nitro. It sounds like it really unloads some in the air probably another 2000 rpm? I have been trying various props. I have an APC 8X9, 9x8, 9x9, 9x10. With any of these props its amazing how much speed this thing carries. With the 9x9 it will climb right out of my hand. Actually on the maiden flight I hand launched it my self at about a 30 deg angle. I read that some people noticed that it rolls to one side after launch but I have not noticed this to be the case on mine. As it was accelerating climbing out for about 5 sec when it looked like something seperated from the wing. And it rolled to the right hard. At first I thought it was aileron flutter! I corrected and noticed the black carbon sticker on the right wing complely ripped off. Actutually only part of it came off. Most of it was trailing behind the wing on the maiden flight. This plane is simply awesome but not at all for beginners. I have a 5 0z aiptek video camera that I am going to strap onto the side of the plane. It should prove interesting. Yes drnickm this thing turns heads. I fly it at my house but luckily I have an open 400 acre field in front of my house. I think it might be tough to land at my RC field with a pond and asphalt runway. This thing is similar to flying a turbine. You have to keep flying in BIG circles. I love mine! What a rush!

After over two years I have retired my magnum.........I got lot's of very fast and exciting flights out of this plane....I think I will take the west v1 engine and put it in something a little slower and easyer to see like a GP viper. As far as speed planes go the magnum is one fine design and the west v1 engines are awesome......sure wish this plane was around when my eyes were young......er.

I'm looking forward to tossing mine up for the first time this weekend. I was going to last weekend but it was windy, so instead I ran up the engine at home - and the big end on the conrod let go after a few seconds of rich 2 cycling. Weston is going to take care of it, I heard there were a few that had a bushing problem. So anyhow last night I started grafting my Jett .50 in there - tight fit, get out the dremel! But now I can fly.. I think my eyes are still up to it but we'll see!

Frankly though, I HATE yellow and black. I built a sport plane years ago with yellow covering and black trim. I had all kinds of misery over orientation with that one, and I don't normally have orientation problems. Never used that color combo again. So, with the Magnum I'll see.. I hope!

Well the magnum is fast..... realllll... fast and in just a matter of seconds you will only have a small black silhouette to fly by.... that or just plan instinct.....I think the color combo help you to see the plane really, cause the black show up good on the wing even when you are way out......lot's of times that's all you will see..the magnum is a great speed plane and all I can say is just be ready.

Did some onboard video work this week.
You can judge the air speed by the wind noise.
A lot of this short flight was at half throttle, but there is one section where she was WFO in a dive.

Camera was a 5.5oz aiptex ISDV.

www.rob.com/matt/rc/rc_video/magnum.wmv

16 mb file.

This plane is SICK!!!
And yes my 9CA is at my friends house so I am flying this with a plane jane 4 channel no D/R no nuthin, and I hand launched it my self no problem. Great trainer...NOT! Great first low wing...NOT!

I havent tached her with and with out the pipe. I will though and post the results. I am on a business trip in Vancouver, BC at the moment. I also havent shortened the header any yet so there are some gains to be made there. On one flight with the APC 9X10 during a straight down dive the motor picked up a lot more rpm than usual. I almost wasnt able to pull out from the dive! I dont really know what happened, maybe the motor came onto the pipe or something with the stock header length? I can see me buying a second one after this thing puts a smokin hole in the ground...or my house....

One thing I will say is that the OS 46 AX has been BULLET PROOF with the mac header and 8.5 cc pipe, 15% nitro. The thing starts right up and idles nicely. It does take some serious concentration to keep the plane in sight though. I love the way it accelerates stright up like a full scale jet. You can do a huge 800' loop and pick up some major speed on the down side of the loop!

It would be interesting if I could build a magnum to accept my K&B 7.5 rear exhaust ducted fan engine and bury the pipe inside the fuselage. I bet that motor would really spin an APC 8X9.
