I have upgraded my Zagi Fixx to an Astroflight 010 "mighty Micro" brushless motor and a 7 cell 700mah Nimh batter with a full bore run time of almost 8 minutes ( prop is the same one that goes with the GWS IPS {"A" motor but bored out to a 3/16ths ID to fit the prop adapter on the direct drive AF motor)). This plane is now in the extreme area of performance. This setup works well but the motor gets hot (not over powered as per the specs and measurements with my AF micro meter)so make sure you let it cool between flights. I will be optimizing this setup hortly and I expect even greater power gains as well as longer duration as the current setup is not even close to being efficient. I will post an update here as well as my site (www.thecarver.net.... still under reconstruction) when I have new figures. This setup really brings this plane to life. You can do just about any areobatic manuver you can think of (execpt knife edge for obvious reasons) and get a good 7 minutes of it at the same time. This plane is gourgous and deserves a powerplant that is not anemic.

Trick R/C reall d
esigned a great plane (other than the powerplant, type of foam (arcell would have been much better), and hinges) but if you mod it be very carefull to not hit the ground as it now comes up VERY quickly. If you have any good ideas or mods, please let me know. Thanks

your not a pro at flying the zagi or zagi fixx until you have mastered night flight and what a kick. I bored two 3 inch holes in each wing of my zagi and then used clear 2mm coroplast as lenses. between these lenses I wired 5 bright leds. on the leading and trailing edges I inserted thin glow sticks

Hi Neocypher,

I've been doing some static tests with different gearboxes and props on the Astro 010 that I plan to use in a second Fixx I'm building. See the following URL:

I would think the amp draw on the Astro 010 using the GWS 8x4.3 stock prop for the Zagi Fixx in a direct drive mode will be more the the instructions say which is 7 amps maximum. Was your test within limits? Also, what hinge mods did you use? Good luck with your changes.

I went ahead and did the upgrade and it worked extremly well (espesilay on 2S2P Lipo pak) but the amp draw was a little high in static tests. I would recomend going up one size in brushless motors as well as upgrading the ESC to at least 10a and using a 3cell serial pak for incredible performance.

With the 010, performance is much better than the stock but it needs more ommph. I will be trying the next size up (as soon as I find out what that is....maybe a hacker 20). This is a great plane but.....

1. it needs to be made of more sturdy stuff.....Z foam is a bad idea

2. it needs a BIG power boost (they say it will not hold up to anything bigger but we know better)

3. Its way to expensive for what you get.

Although these are some big issues, the plane is an execelent design and is very areodynamic. It flies very well and will do just about any trick in the book. Just need one made of epp or fiberglass or something light but strong and durable (I have been spoiled by EPP foam).
