emilmendoza,
Thanks for the picture, that helps a lot. I think the macs muffler looks pretty good on there. I wasn't wild with the looks of the OS AX square muffler, it doesn't match the looks of the plane for sure.

Anyone have a Saratoga fuselage they want to sell (or the entire ARF)? Needs to be shipped to zip code 29412 (Charleston SC).

I had one with an OS 46AX in it, and it was great!  Flies nicely and looks great.  Lands a little faster than my Pulse, but does not have any bad habits.  Build quality is typical of Hanger 9-very high quality.

I just checked Hanger 9 and they appear to have discontinued the Saratoga 40.  Horizon is out of stock.  I can't imagine why, given its popularity.

I am on my second Saratoga...Last spring I was flying off skis and the runway was very icy with big holes melted in it...I came in to land and dropped into a hole and tore the landing gear completly out..It bounced back up in the air so I hit the throttle and went around..Poor mans retratcs...I still had lots of fuel so I was doing some goofing around then I got thinking " What if the battery falls out " so I came in and found a patch of snow to land on...I think nylon bolts might have saved me some work..It made a mess of the bottom of my plane..Those things are not made to stand much abuce...But they sure fly nice....

Its is too bad that the Saratoga is no longer in production..Mine is getting a little beat up but I will keep it...I think I will scratch build one maybe just a little bigger...I am not sure how to size it up say 25% but I think it would be a pretty nice plane...

Score!

I saw one of these NIB at the hobby shop yesterday; did some reading on it here last night, and went back this morning and snarfed it up.

What a jewel... I can only surmise that sales weren't high enough to warrant them continuing production. We (modelers in general) are our own worst enemy. We want everything CHEAP (as in inexpensive). But, by God, it had better be top-shelf quality, too! News flash; the two don't go hand-in-hand. This ARF is among the best-quality I have seen from any maker; and that includes the excellent Pilot offerings. With an MSRP of $229, its not priced "out of the box", either. But Billy-Bob and Bubba see a similar Phoenix (or worse) ARF for $100 less, and go right for the el cheapo.

Serves them right, as far as I'm concerned... but it hoses those of us who ARE willing to pay more for a quantum leap in quality. At the rate this is going, all we'll be able to buy in a few years is a poor design, made from bamboo, covered in ChinaKote.

It will be a while before I get around to putting this one together. But my brief look through the box at the pieces/parts was enough to convince me that, if I run across another one NIB, I'm grabbing it without hesitation.

The H9 Katana 50 I bought yesterday is equally impressive, from a kit-quality standpoint. I've assembled several dozen ARFs, from widely disparate makers, since that first Royal 40T in 1986. These two H9 offerings are as good as anything I've seen yet; except for the hardware. The only real gripe I can think of is the Phillips head "bolts", but they will do the job if you use thread locker.

Besides, most of who have been at this a while have our favorite type of fastener, etc., and use them. What has impressed me is the quality and materials of the structural parts; wings, fuse, cowl, etc.

The Katana will go on the table soon. If it flies as good as it looks, I'll be getting another one to stash right away... before Billy-Bob and Bubba's non-purchasing kills it too.

No place around here to do any float flying, Ken. I'd certainly like to try it, though.

its the last glow plane in my fleet every thing else gas or electric. its powered be a satio 82 just a great combo. great speed range can be set up as a trainer or yank and bank at a flip of the dual rate switch.

Did you mount the 82 semi-inverted like the kit mount calls for? If so, how does it behave in that orientation?

I'm considering that engine for mine, but never had much luck with OS four strokes with the jug below side-mounted...

The 82 seems like a lot of motor for the Saratoga..Did you need to add any weight to the tail ? You are rite about how they fly . They are very versitile...I wish they were still in production...They are a lot like the Pulse only sholder wing which is better for floats than low wing...I am flying mine off the snow on floats now..This will be the third year bringing in the New year with it weather permitting...

I did add 1.5 onz. to the tail of the plane. The motor is mounted at the 7 0r 8 clock position when looking at the motor from the front. I have had no motor problems at all.
