I ended up creating a small slide for the tailwheel mount to rub against as it retracks in to the opening. Seems to work pretty good but if you hold any rudder the wheel it self wants to hit. I may try the spring idea as well is it should snap the wheel straight when the cable gets slack.

Thanks Sam, but I just don't see spending more $ when I have a G62 and a B+B Side muffler on hand.
She will look fine at 100mph.......................LOL

Roger,
Dick Bennett (B&B) makes a thin carb extension (replaces the present thick one) that may help along with tilting the engine about 5-10 degrees. Those muffler corners are pretty thick so you may be able to grind them off. I've had success using dremel's metal grinding bits to remove aluminum.

A pitts 'wraparound' may do better:

Roger, I have a friend with a G-62 on a TF Corsair and almost the whole bottom of the cowl cut ... and nobody notices it on a nice low pass. I would have used a G-62 if I didn't have a DLE 55 on hand. That G-62 is a great juggernaut of an engine.

What are folks using to extend the exhaust tubes on there jtec mufflers when using a DLE 55? Or, how is the cowling holding up without any extensions?

A new or 2nd version of the J-Tec Wrap around Pitts made for the TF P-40 and DLE55 is made and sold by Jtec that has longer exhaust tubes that clear the cowling, you can buy direct from Jtec and specify this muffler with the longer tubes, Tower Hobbies sells this muffler but it may be the older version with the shorter tubes.

Congrats to Capt G for his first place in "Best Military Flight" category at the OEAF event over the weekend. The airplane looked great in the air and the landings were particularly nice.

Bummer, I already have the muffler installed and have no desire to buy a second one. Hopefully others have already had some flying time on there planes and not had any issues.

I would get a piece of heater hose from the local auto parts store and secure it with a couple small hose clamps to extend those muffler down tubes. There isn't much pressure in the down tube and getting the exhaust out of the plane is a good thing.

The tubes need to be about 5 1/2" long to clear the cowl on the P-40. The one I have is only 4" long.

get you a piece of Al tube that slips over the muffler pipes, slit the ends 4-5 times and then use a hose clamp and high-temp rtv to attach them to the existing stacks. I have found that old aluminum framed lawn chairs make good extensions.

Serge760 - I would take the bolts out and clean the threads and bolt holes thoroughly with some alcohol or other cleaner. Then put a light coat of permatex ultra gasket sealer on them and on the engine exhaust flange (don't use a gasket.) Tighten them down and let cure overnight. That should do it.

The gasket will fail and eventually lead to the muffler becomming loose. The permatex will provide a seal and allow a muffler to flange contact so it doesn't loosen. I checked my permatex and it's Ultra Copper. Gaskets haven't worked for me in glow or gas, but without them I've had little trouble.

BTW - I'm using a JTEC large volume muffler and had to make a small 1/8 moon shaped cut for the muffler side and one bolt hole. I considered the others, but for me it's a matter of noise control and I think the large volume should help so the cutouts are not a problem. The exhaust tubes stick out about 1/4 inch on the bottom.

Hey Roger, I have the P47 and the tailwheel on it does the same thing. I only widened the doorway for the wheel to retract through and need to maintain a centered rudder before retracting the gear. I have had no in flight problems with it the way it is, but I will be paying attention to that area when I begin the P40 build.

Hey Serge, clean all the threads of the bolts and bolts holes with acetone, you can use a q-tip for the bolt holes and use red thread locker. Get a tube of Permatex Grey gasket maker for autos and apply a thin coat on the muffler, exhaust port, and both sides of the gasket if you use one. Make sure these surfaces are clean before you apply the gasket maker, then bolt her together snuggly. That should do it You can get it at any auto store or walmart.

Getting there. Mounted the satelite rx in the copckpit. It was a good position and also provides a bit of flash.

Another tip to pass along. I removed the covering on the bottomo of the wing and fuse for the belly pans using the soldering iron method. However, the edges were slightly raised due to the burning of the covering. In order to get the edges feathered smooth before glueing the pans on I took my covering iron and set it on a hot setting. I then went over the edges and got them smoothed out!

Just finished my p-40 this evening. Just need to re-check the CG a little closer as I just the did the quick finger lift (boy this thing is heavy compared to what I am used to flying). Looks like it might be a little nose heavy. May have to move the ignition battery back some and see if that gets it close to where it needs to be.

Anybody else come out nose heavy with DLE 55?

Did you check the CG with the gear up? I like my warbirds a little nose heavy at first and then adjust after a few flights. I am using a ZDZ 50 and it came out just a little nose heavy with gear up. I have not flown it yet but if it is like the P-51 and P-47 I will be happy.

Yeap, checked it with the gear up (retracked). It may be fine once I get it checked correctly. It is just to heavy handle by hand.

A friend of mine who has built many a warbird with retracts says he always does his cg check with one wheel up and one wheel down.
With the P40 that retracts to the rear it would be interesting to see how that works.
I am about a week away to CG mine, will try and let you know, unless you guys do it first.
