One bolt is slightly recessed and the bolt heads are not parallel . The instructions that came with the muffler say do that but I not sure that I can. but i must try something.

Thanks

One final thought: Do you balance your props?

Yes I do balance my props but I will re-balance. Anyone else having this problem with this combination DLE55 and J-tec P40 muffler?

You might try balancing the spinner. I drill holes in the backplate to achieve the balance. Best of luck. Also, you could fashion a support strap on the back of the muffler and attach to the firewall area. Slimline mufflers have this feature.

Hope you can get this sorted out!

Well two more flights and the muffler was loose again and the engine was loose from the firewall. I think that I have some serious vibration. I will try the wire on the muffler bolts as in post 960 and balance my spinner.

I think you should get a dial indicator and see if your crank shaft isn't running true. That's the first place to look.

Check your prop and spinner balance first. Pulling the crank is not the first thing to do. Best regards.

No one said to pull the crank.. you can check its trueness while its still in the crank case. The point being if the spiner and prop are ballanced, I believe he said they already were, whats left?

I suppose that could be true even on a new engine.

I hope it is the spinner thats out of ballance. That's the easiest thing to fix after the prop. Yes its possible to have a bent shaft even on a new engine. Rare but possible. When you dont know what is causing the vibration you also don't know what isn't causing the vibration.

I don't know what to tell you? You really need to mount the spinner somehow to see if its out of balance. If you know that the prop is in in balance can you mount the prop and spinner and balance them both at the same time? Just thinking out loud here.

The spinner is to big for my prop balance. I'm going to fly the p40 without the spinner and see what happens. Will advise.

Bob. I drilled and wired the muffler bolt, re-loctited the mounting bolts and removed the spinner. I then ran the engine for about 10 minutes on the ground with and without and with the spinner. I re-mounted the spinner an flew for about 5 minutes. All is tight so far. I will balance the spinner when I find a way.

Hey guys I picked one of thes up dureing the tower discount, so now I have

This P40 and a Gaint P47 sitting in the box wateing on me.

My qestion is why is the build threads on this bird so much smaller than the P47. Are there isssues with the P40 that make most peaple afraid to fly them?

Except the cost of the folding reatracts, i cant see why Theres not more P40's out there.

I have been to 2 war birds shows and saw 5 P51's and 3 P47 but no P40's? WhY

I have no issues. The build is straight forward and it flies great. My only problem is keeping the muffler tight!!!

I've seen full scale P-40's fly more than once. But they are a pre-wwII plane and not as popular as the Mustangs and Jugs. They do fly fine though. In the modeling world I suppose it's not as popular for what ever reasons? Lots of famous pilots flew them though..
