Thats too funny. I have to laugh at people who think their way is the only way. Pretty closed minded. Its all the same hobby. Who really cares how the plane was aquired. If it flys, cool, have a ball with it.

Some people need to find something else to worry about.

Thats the point .. Its about flying and skill in the air... If the point was too just bring your plane too the field and admire it Yeahh kit builders could look down on ARFS..

I know some that build some awsome planes, but they can't fly. They enjoy that part of the hobby. Wish I could build like that. Mine are far from junk, but I could never do the detail of scale like some do. Man I wish I could.

Why are Arfs So cheap? - 7/31/2003 10:41:21 AM

I saw this question " Arf's must be of cheap quality because they sell cheaper than kits"
I think we might need too look were the arfs are built. In china the cost of labor is so low that they can sell them cheap and they make so many the economics of scale kicks in. The more you make the cheaper you can make them.

My kadet sr arf makes everybody at the field look and say how well built it made...

my pt40 kit cost 69 bux. can you get an arf for that? oh yes 20 bux for covering so 89 bux is still cheaper than you can get an arf i think. besides that i put it together so at least i know it has glue everywhere it is supposed to!

its still the old "ford vs chevy" thing ask 100 people and you will get 100 different answers and reasons why they like their favorite.

lets just go fly

This discussion is just like saying you HAVE to start out with Gliders rather then Prop planes. You can say the only REAL way you know how to fly is with a glider because suppose your engine dies in a prop plane and you can't bring it down in one piece without flying a glider.

Everyone has an opinion, and most of the points posted on here was well noted. I personally want to build my own plane which I haven't seen in a kit yet so I'm probably going to REALLY have to start from scratch. It's going to be a challenge but I feel that AT LEAST EVERYONE IN THE HOBBY SHOULD BUILD ONE PLANE FROM A KIT IN THERE LIFETIME. it really makes your knowledge of flying complete. Now I wouldn't recommend doing it in the begining of the hobby because that's what RTF/ARF's are for.

This thread could have stopped after Tall Pauls' post.
ARF + quick into the air for less than a kit.
ARF - assembly required. (most of the time)
Kit + fun to build, your workmanship, easy to "personalize".
Kit - Lots of time required, cost more in the long run.

Isn't this rather hypocritical? After all, for some, it may not be about "flying skill in the air" but rather the skill it takes to build somthing that can actually get into the air, or be a scale representation of a plane, or that cool covering scheme.

Hey Gordon, you forgot invent the wheel for use on landing gear

Like I said.. I love arf's and kits both As long as they fly good, who cares??? LOL... I just wish more companies had ARF's like Hanger 9 used to do with the cap.. multiple color scheme options for each arf.... That would be SOOOOO cool!!

i.e. Hanger 9 Edge 540 in standard blue/yellow scheme, or an all yellow scheme so I could do Kirby's scheme on it... or other graphic packages to go with it... That would be sooo cool! IMO

Uhhh ... 2 possible answers to that one:

1) I was intending to use skids for snow-flying.

2) That step was included in the "..." that my post showed between Step 2 1/2 & Step N.

This stuff is going to be around for ever... what a waste of time argueing who is better...

I would like to point out one thing - some of us "scratch builders" (yes, I love to design my own planes and have 8 or 9 under my belt) do NOT look down on other people for any reason. I also enjoy building IC engines and have just finished my first scratch built turbine this summer. I would never even consider thinking I am in some way "better" than a fellow who enjoys buying a plane and flying.

I do what I do because I ENJOY it. IF we all cared more for what we like and less for what the other guy is buying/building/flying we would do away with this mess once and for all.

I like ARFS, I like kits, I like to design and build my own planes, I like working metal etc. And most importantly I LOVE TO FLY. Its really quite simple....

Worry about yourself and everyone else can take care of themselves...

Andrew

I have only bought one ARF in my life and that was one too many. Jesus what a piece of junk. A Spirit sailplane. I have observed others at several fields and most complain about their investment. All have modified their purchase to add strength where needed. All when asked said they were not impressed with their model, not as good of quality as they expected. Foreign built crap mostly. Keep buying this stuff guys and I will have the only well built model on the field. You can come over and admire some quality.

Dewey,
Guess it's just a case of doing your home work, and buyer beware, huh?
I've just picked up a "Spirit " ARF, w/radio installed for a song, and I've got to say it flys great, well built, took 15 mins. to get it in the air, and looks real good too. Maybe you just got one made after lunch, on a Friday!
