The US 60 should be between 7 and 8 lbs. If it were mine, I would be looking for ways to reduce weight if possible.

Mine came in at 7 lb 10 oz before covering. Not sure how much weight covering adds; I broke my scale before I finished covering. Does anybody have an estimate on how much is added by the covering? Ultracote in my case.

I just checked it on my digital scale and its 7.4lbs and a full roll of monokote is 0.4lbs. This is new with the wraper, instructions and cardboard. So I think I'm ok but I'm still going to see if I can remove some weight.

Rest In Peace Mike!!!

If you built the plane per the plans and used what was in the box wood and hardware wise then 7 pounds ready to cover is right on. I cant figure out where you would remove weight from but just be careful. There was a modeler that posted here on the forums that he did a "lighten up the US" thread and the plane looked naked as all get out but I dont remember the outcome or what that modeler reported the finish up product was.
I do confess that the US is a little bit "over built" in my opinion but it is what it is to make it the Ultra Sport. I dont think the covering is all that heavy at all and when you weigh the roll of covering you are weighing the covering, its backing material and the cardboard tube so the .4 pound is over the weight of the actual covering weight. Build the plane to the book and by the plans and if you desire add retracts and enjoy you wont be disappointed and besides if the plane comes out to mid 7 to mid 8 pounds finished and ready to fly you will appreciate the fact that the plane penetrates the wind on windy days where it hardly affects the plane and you can even get so use to the plane that you will even take off and land it in full cross wind and still enjoy the plane. Relax and enjoy.

From what I have read on this forum, the man was a well respected talent and a cornerstone of the Ultra Sport Brotherhood.

Some sort of tribute is in order...

For a tribute to Mike I was think everyone that has an US could put something on there plane. Like maybe a black strip on the tail with his name in it.

I'm just starting the covering on mine and plan on putting something to that effect on the plane. Mike's advice and mods were used throughout my build, great guy for sure and will be missed by the brotherhood..

Excellent!  I am just starting my build but I will do something similar when it is covered.

I'm thinking about this "In honor of Minnflyer Ultra Sport Brother #2". Also Great Planes should make a special addition US60 ARF honoring Mike with retracts and flaps in his red, white & blue scream.

RCKen,

Can you run this up the flagpole at GP??

This is the best idea and would be a great tribute!  Put me on the waiting list for one!

Normally, I replace wood included in kits to reduce weight in the final model. This way, my US60 final weight is 7.0 pounds without fuel, fully covered with everything.

My US60 has GP mechanical retracts, flaps, 0.75 TH engine, 4 cell NiMH battery, 7 digital servos (retracts, flaps, throttle (mini-servo w/flex steel pushrod), rudder (steel-wire pull-pull) , (2) ailerons, and elevator (Dual-Pushrod)), Towerkote covering, carbon fiber pushrods, JR-PCM receiver, GP light weight spinner, APC 12x6, 14 oz tank, and foam wheels. No lead for CG balancing, only a very small weight for lateral balance (0.4 OZ). I built-up the stab and fin, I did not use the solid wood pieces. I made lightening holes in almost all ribs. Probably 90% Wood Glue, 5% CA, and 5% epoxy.

It flies awesome. Great pull even with the APC 12x6. As a matter of fact, the other day we checked the power with a fish scale. It was doing a pull of about 12 lbs. Same pull my SK 0.90 does in my Giles with an APC 14x6 prop. I was very surprised.

The 12x6 generates a resonable fast speed and unlimited vertical even at 3/4 throttle. Normally, I fly it straight and level at 1/2 throttle.

So sorry to hear of Minnflyers passing, I had to do a double take on the post. I thought it must be an April Fools joke. Damn I hate to hear it is true. I have read every review he has written. I will be adding a tribute to Mike on my latest plane.

Goodbye Mike. You will be in my thought and prayers.

I think that a fitting tribute to Mike would be if EVERYONE in the brotherhood who has an Ultrasport in flying condition would take it out to their local flying fields this weekend and fly the wings off of them. If I hadn't done something stupid and sold my US1000 about a month ago, I certainly would. I'm sure he would be watching over all of us.

Just a thought.

I like your idea David. My US60 is still in hibernation. I will dusty off this evening and check batteries, etc.

I would fly mine but its not done yet. I'll have to fly it on the simulator.

To reduce weight I could replace the Tru-Turn spinner with a plastic one. My spinner weighs 0.148lb or 2.35oz. What does a 2 3/4 plastic one weigh? I'm also a bit nose heavy so this could help that issue.

Steve,

I do not remember what my spinner weights, but I do remember when I was choosing the spinner for my US60, the GP plastic with aluminum backplate was the lightest of the reasonable cost ones. Of course you can always find something lighter for $30+

The big brown truck dropped off this cowl for my US 40+ and one for a future Super Decathlon.  They're from Fiberglass Specialties and they look very good.  A little pricey but not something I could duplicate any cheaper.  Should be more durable than the ABS version supplied with the kit.  I've seen some ABS cowls that some of the members here have done and they look superb but I thought I'd try this.  I'll let you know how it fits.

I actually regret not having worked on my US 40 and finishing it so I could have shown Mike the finished product.  He gave such great advice and tips to this first time kit builder that has made this kit relatively painless for me.

I too will make time to fly an US in memory of Mike on Saturday. I am really going to miss him here at RCU. He had so much enthusiasm for the US and all his projects in addition to using his gifted talent of graphic design to help us.

Keep em flying in memory of Mike,

Scott
