You can buy the plans direct from Great Planes. The fuse plan is $6.92, the wing plan is $2.82. I don't think the wing plan has the rib patterns, I can't remember for sure. I noticed you said "no foam wing setup", does that mean you don't want a foam wing? Because there is one available, I think from Eureka Aircraft.

You can get the plans with the rib patterns from RCMPLANS.com. I have a set but why not just buy the kit.

KaP2011,Roary m, smkrcflyer

thanks guys for reply. thought rcm was out of business and plans not available.
checked the ama, model airplane news, uncle willies sites without results.
never done a foam wing before also balsa build so far.
on the kit price 150 a lot of money on retirement income for kit. have lots of balsa
and time.
will do a search on the rcm plans
had a arf US 60 years ago and windy day and engine flame-out met its demise, not much
you can do with an arf repaining crash damage.

thanks again

The more I fly this plane, the more it becomes my favorite plane. I finaly finished the covering job. I was going to put a decal on it as a tribute to Minnflyer but decided that the covering scheme itself and the Minnflyer mods to the plane were a tribute. The E-flite retracts have worked great until this past weekend when the right side burned itself up. Don't know why, it just retracted on the rollout after a smooth landing. It was as if I had flipped the retract switch except that the left side did not retract. I called Horizon Hobby and explained what happened and they said they would send a replacement. That's what product support is supposed to be like. No hassle just "Sorry you had a problem, here's a new one. Don't bother sending the bad one back. We trust you."

Your plane looks very nice. I'm doing the final assembly on mine now. How did you mount your canopy?

Thanks for the compliment. If you've never flown an Ultra Sport before, you'll love this plane. I used screws to mount my canopy because I have the battery pack mounted under it. That's also why I painted it black.

KaP2011,

The following are comments not criticism.

There is possibility to install such a canopy so that screws do not have to be removed to access the battery pack.
No screws are used and of course no glue either unless the canopy is part of a sub-structure.

I can illustrate one mehod if you really need to see an example.

You may also have seen many models where the canopy is part of an entirely removable structure held by dowels and only one or two screws or magnets.

I imagine that you are not recharging a lipo pack inside the model with little ventilation.

Zor

I got my canopy tinted use the Rit dye method. I didn't want it to dark because I have a volt watch mounted on the dash. Also got my retracts done.

Thanks for the input Zor.
I'm using 6v NiMH for power and there are ventilation holes cut for cooling. I've always hated gluing or screwing the canopy on, I've just never known of a better way. I would be very interested in hearing what you have to offer. I've got a couple of planes that have the canopy attached to a sub-structure and that works well for what they are. It didn't occure to me to do that with this plane, I'm not even sure it would work on the Ultra Sport without major changes to the fuselage.

smkrcflyer - Looking good, more pictures please.

I bought the plans before the 60 size kit came out. It has to be one of the easiest plans build ships I have seen. The kit is nice but you shouldn't have any trouble cutting this guy and building him.

KaP2011,

The canopy pictures I posted previously were a quick find in over 5,000 pictures.
Here are more recent ones.

Zor,
How is it clamped? It is not readily apparent from your photos.
Thanks,
John

Hi JNorton,

I will try to explain and will not apologize for the way I write my postings.

Looking at the first picture on the left we see on the left side of the cockpit a piece of hard balsa glued on the inside making the fuselage thicker by about 1/8" and about 3/16" vertically. Now looking at the canopy itself there is aluminum strips cemented on the inside of the canopy. The two aluminum strips extend below the bottom edges of the clear plastic and are shaped to snap in over and below the balsa strips just mentioned at the cockpit section of the fuselage sides.

We also see two strips of hard balsa cemented on the inside of the clear canopy from near front to near back.
When closing the canopy these two ;pieces sit on top of the fuselage sides and the clear plastic extend a bit below that. So on the ooutside the clear plastic is flush against the fuselage outside surface and the two aluminum strip snapped in prevent the canopy from going outward as well as opening upward.

If you now look at the second (middle) picture at the front of the canopy you see a break where the white dope meets the red dope, From the rear side of the cabane wires to the front of the clear canoply there is two lollypop sticks epoxyed and shimmed to leave just the thickness of the clear canopy that has a flange left on and slide underneath the lollypop sticks. The canopy cannot possibly lift out of that nor snap out of the sides aluminum strips.

In the third picture you can see the clear canopy extending below the side strips of hard balsa that are painted blue and also the front part of the canopy that slips under the lollypop sticks.

Later the pilot got a seat backrest and the space behind him became a small baggage compartment.

Hope this text is sufficiently explicit but feel free to ask further questions.

Best regards from Zor.

Thanks for the info and the photos. An interesting idea, looks sorta scale. And not too difficult to fabricate.
