What is the most powerful s400 size brushless setup?

I have Graupner Speed 480 bb race and Gaupner fan, now I hear this combo cant fight its way out of a wet paper bag, so I am going brushless.

I just need advice on what to buy without getting caught out with an inferior setup again.

All info appreciated.

well i am no expert but every one seems to go with mega or astro there are different types of brush less motors some are setup for geared setups and some are for direct drive example mega 16/15/3 is the best brushless for a 5X5 prop direct drive while a 16/15/8 is good for gear boxes it has allot of torque. brushless motors really put out power they are worth the money

i have 2 of these units. use an aveox 27/13/3. I had them in a graupner comet and was getting fantastic performance and duration.

I wonder if you would mind giving me more info about your Comet?
Like how you mounted the naceles, I am worried about gueing them on because I would like to use them for an A10 next.
What was the flight performance like, ballistic! would you compare it to say a 25 size glow sport plane?
Duration about3 min?
Flying weight? hand launch? static thrust?

thanks-nervous flyer.

the naceles were just glued on with epoxy. they graupner units are very nice fans and well balanced, so little vibration to worry about.

the comet after launch could climb ot at a 30 to 40 degree angle. Once "on step" huge 200 foot loops and vertical manuvers we easy to do, provided you keep the energy and speed up. ( typical of a jet) The plane always turned heads at the field as it was fast, smooth and unique sounding. ( with the 2 brushless motors)

the same motors and fans are now going in a scale simprop dornier 328 jet. they are a great, lightweight, powerful and clean setup.

Hi

the most powerful setup would explode the graupner fan

B40 8L on 12cells 600watts and 1,2kg thrust from a minifan 480, but I doubt the graupner fan handle that kind of power...

I would choose a Mega 16/15/2 on 8x2600Nimh

this setup flies the Ky Shooting star superb! 5-6min fligths with lot´s of power.

Guys, thanks for all the constructive info, I hope to fly my config. this weekend with the two speed 480bb's. I will most probably order the brushless next week.

I was not under the impression that the ky fan was that powerful (or the graupner so fragile) but I agree (after a lot of web surfing) I'll probably go for the Mega's because I want the Graupners on an A10.

What speed control was on the comet?

I noticed that you have 2 Aveox 27/13/3 for your aircraft.

How do you get both motors to work since I am having a problem with 2 of my Aveox 27/13/3 - SL18 combos. One of the motors keeps shutting down after a short duration.

Seems to be I suspect the motor cut off kicking in and this is not good for a twin engine set up.

Is there a way to make two motors work either:-

1. Two motors on one SL18 speed controller?
2. Two speed controller but able to cut both motors at the same time?
3. Two Aveox 27/13/3 with a kontronik speed controller?
4. Disable the motor cut off so that it does not shut the motors down.

Thanks in advance.

Rappy Pappy,

Are you using two speed controllers with two seperate batteries?
You could be facing problems if one battery drains faster than the other. Would be better for you to either use one pack, or connect the two packs in parallel so that both motors drain the joint pack equally. That may solve your problem.

Of course, this is only assumption since you told us about your motor setup, but seem to forgotten to tell us what exact setup you have in terms of batteries and speed controllers (i.e. one controller, or two packs, or etc. etc.)

If you are using a Y harness on your speed controllers (assuming you have two controllers) it may be that one of the controllers does not get the full output of pulses from the receiver, as it is reversed. I believe the GP controllers are affected by this, where they perfrom better with a certain direction set on the throttle (either normal or reversed). Maybe that is causing you problems also.

Finally if you want to keep your blood pressure down, store the helis, store your twin jets and go fly your ZAGI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey MalaysianFlyer,

Two speed controllers onto one battery. Speed controllers connected in parallel. Also tried using two channels to control individual speed controllers.

Same problem. However I suspect is the high current draw that is causing either one of the speed controller to shutdown.

Have tried on the heli mode on the speed controller...problem seems to go away now.

Zagi is on the way. Will finish off the strapping tonight. Going brushless.

Will use the other for the microjet.

So how's your slinger comin along.....

Rappy Pappy,

It flies, but not as good as a Zagi. Not very good instructions, the actual plane does not look as good at the box pictures, and the tray doesnt fit very well. Still, I shouldn't be surprised, as it is a Great Planes product, so there had to be a GREAT many mistakes!!!!!

Am planning to modify it to see if I can improve its performance.

And no more cracks about old age ok???? Or I will build a Spaggi with the 46 on the nose just to "kill" your zagi

Try to mod the battery tray to accomodate AA sized batteries.

Then you might be able to get better batteries, i.e. AR or AUs.

Also consider using the Speed 480 in-lieu of your stock 400 motor.

The stock motor sucks. Another mod is to check and adjust the timing of your motor.

With regards to your Spaggi I have been hearing about it for ags. I would probably die of old age before seeing it fly! Ha Ha!.

Bring the Slinger to the field and lets see how we can soup this baby out. Maybe plunk my Aveox on it!

Mugh rip the wings off but then again what a rush!

Yep, am already planning to cut the battery tray.

After plunking th Aveox on it, theres no need to take it back right???
