here is the new gear - next weekend we see what it turns.

Target is the 3 Blade Spit, scale Prop  (hopefully 31 x 26" or  28")

Hi Ralf,

What about a 3W-110 or 150..??
Could you make a gear for that..?
Sent you another pm.

Cheers,

Roger

Sendt several mails to info@as-scaleparts.de trying to order a BMF 80 with gear for a 1/4 Bf-109.

No answer.

I see on the webpage http://www.as-scaleparts.de/32.html that we cannot expect any engines until 2013.

Okay for me, but I think one could at least take orders?

I like the design of the gear. Would be fantastic to have a BMF 80 with that gear in my messerschmitt.

I dont care if it is e.g. a ZDZ 80 or a 3W behind that gear. It is the gear I like.

Hi Kwik,

no answer?  - normally he answers - i will give him a advice.

With the BFM is one issue:  BFM makes only a couple of that engines and they are rapidly sold out. At the moment there are no engines available. -hmm.
And the RR 258 inline engine:  I test my stuff before i put up for sale .  At the moment I am proceeding the manufacturing of that beast - but i see slowly  a result.

by the way:
I do not  go the way  like other manufacturers  do -    marketing and selling    before thoroughly testing and do not take orders  without having any engines/gears.

- please understand these circumstances
.

I understand very well. An approach everyone should follow.

Just wanted to get a message that I am on the list, delivery expected dec 2012....

It is okay for me to wait, when waiting for that combo.

hehe.

RR 258 !

its time for that breaking news:
now it is real- i have the permission to come out with it:  MVVS plan to produce that Inline - Engine RR 258.... with gear '(!) - or without....
the expected name will be MVVS 116 RR .
. . we all need a little bit patience until next year ....

So it takes a good direction - that is the best way from my point of view.

Congratulations with your excellent work Ralf.

I studied the picture of the MVVS cylinder temperatures. How, and where did you fit the sensor? Looks like thermocouple wires. Temperature are creeping up to 250°
Is that °C or °F ?

Thanks in advance.

I'm German...  so  it's Celsius.

And -yes - that seems to be hot - but the engine is still running.  No problem with full throttle - directly to idling - and back to full throttle. No "signs" of "lean or hot running" .

I take this temp with NiCrNi Termocouples "inside" the gasket of the spark plug- Special"cutommade" copper-washers with  the couple-tip inside (soldered).... maybe the thermocouple get a "offset" by soldering inside the copper-washer.
(This is aslo a measurement to get the difference between the cylinders)

Thank you for the explanation.
The washer under the plug certainly is the best way to measure. Offset should be there at room temperature as well.
I fly aerotow and measure (MVVS engines) with a NTC resistor at the back of the cylinder (highest cooling rib) with the sensor shielded from air. At peak temperature I get 220°C. The engine does not respond with less power. However, the piston bottom (inside piston dome) starts getting brown to black at temperatures above 190°. This shows the piston was too hot.
Remedy?
So I made a boost port with piston port to set up gas flow through the piston. After prolonged static running at 200+ degrees the piston bottom still is clean without a trace of discoloration.

MVVS engines are of cart racing design technology. Carts are mostly driven with on-off power over the track, with the long straight only during a few seconds. Long high power runs longer than 30 seconds may need some extra engine design care.

Im shure that my measurements are ok - and the engine is running since more than 200 h....

And: you put a separate boost port into the cyl. -  at the opposite side of the exhaust? do you have pic's of your modification? Does it result in better accelerance or do you have more (or less) max. power?    interesting things everywhere!

I have a bit more power over the whole rpm range. The extra power however is a side effect of the modifications for towing. The 58 cylinder does not need it as it already is very powerful.
The 116 boxer engine as fitted on a Bidule116 produces 15.8 hp at 6400 rpm using RE2 tuned pipes and Mejzlik TH27x12x3.  (edit: 6400 rpm was 6200)
My tow 58 produces 6.8hp at 7200 rpm using a Mejzlik 23x10 prop and TD75 muffler
The wrist pin bearings are bronze bushed for increased reliability. The extra port also is for extra lubrication flow to the bearing as well as for piston cooling. Piston sides are relieved for less friction.
The piston upper part is relieved to avoid metal contact in the upper cylinder region, and allow compression gasses to reach the ring better for less friction and better sealing.

PS
After some running, I checked the ring ends as they ride over the boost port. The wear surface is still smooth and flat without any sign of ring ends catching in the port.

No, The opposite side has the exhaust port. It would take some snaky porting to squeeze in two extra ports AND give them enough directional energy to overcome the high speed exhaust flow over the piston top.

Hello Ralf !

A friend of mine wants to sell me a ZDZ 80RV. It has run 2 tanks of gasoline.

I am building a Meister Platinum Bf-109 1/4 scale.

I would like to use your gear in it.

Question;

Should I say no thanks to the ZDZ, because your gear only fits MVVS ?

Hello to Norway,

all the ZDZ'ds I've seen ... are not  the engines I would choose.  They where running rough. I dont like them -but thats only my personal opinion.

My gear is not designed to fit MVVS engines -> i take MVVS cylinders and pistons to design a inline engine (RR258) with gear.

BUT - i have good news:::

Wait until next year - MVVS is in touch with me - they decide to manufacture the RR258 with and without gear. Maybe they will give them a little bit different name - but the engine is the same. The manageer told me that they starting in spring 2013 !!!

Okay. In post 77 you show us a picture of a BMF 80 with gear. That was the original solution that
caught my interest ; an 80cc single cylinder with gear.

Otherwise I am afraid the price skyrocket into the Kolm region.....

Something similar to Mick Reeves solution for the G62, but stronger, fitting into the nose of a 1/4 scale 109.

It's been a long time, but are there any more videos or news about your engines and gear reduction drives??

I have been looking out for more 1/4 Me-109 videos with the BFM-80 engines and reduction drive but have found nothing..

Thanks

Dave
