David, In my case it was House of Color Laquers and Glasurit clear. Both highly regarded as quality items. It was on a motorcycle and there were 6 layers of color before the clear went on. I think there was only about 24 hours between the last coat of color before the clear.  I've got an all composite 40% Extra that I will be gearing up to paint in the spring and the use of laquer colors is something of interest due to cost of such a large project. I have just been staying away from that system because of my past failed experience. I'm pretty sure I just didn't let the colors gas off long enough.

Ralph,

Are you going to wet sand before clearing? I find the sanding tends to ''set'' the paint to the point where all that's left is pigment. Any solvents are definitely gone if they are ''released'' in this fashion. But then again, lacquer is so volatile that I'd be curious to see a half life chart of the solvents. I suspect off gassing is logarithmic with a half life of, give or take, an hour. In other words, there should be no appreciable solvent content difference between 24 and 48 hours.

David

David,

I always lightly wet sand with 600 after each color. Mainly to knock down any boogers that might have attached themselves to the paint. I've often wondered if sanding helped the drying process at all.

clear back to nitro cellulose lacquers painters would use 600 wet or dry to scuff the coats to allow better flash off of solvents....new catalyzed paints have much less solvent

For the final touch I got lazy and resorted to pin striping tape!

At this point the UFO is ready to be clear coated.

BE-U-T-Full!!!

Ralph, looks totally awesome.  I really like how you used a classic paint look.  The Lettering style is SO perfect.

Congrats on a fantastic build and finish.

Thanks very much Doug!

I'm happy that you mentioned the "classic paint look" because that's pretty much what I was shooting for with this paint scheme. I tried to create a scheme that flowed with the curvy, swept back lines of the UFO and captured the classic feel of a 70's era pattern model. I hope that Joe Bridi would also approve!

The instant I saw that font I thought it would be a prefect fit with this model! A curvy font for a curvy airplane! The font is called Sofachrome.

Ralph-

A request.

Would you be willing to film this airplane flying for us (me)? I have never seen a UFO fly and would really like to see this.

Stunning. Personally, I'd hate to fly something so well done. I guess it's a good thing you'll be at the controls, huh?

It doesn't get any better looking than this or Mike's Blue Angel.

Hey Ralph, I really like the Font you picked!

Thanks Paul!

All I need now is one more 65-70 degree weekend to shoot the clear. Hopefully Mother Nature has one more left in her before the weather goes completely south! Fingers crossed!

Brian,

I do have a friend lined up to handle the video chores on Maiden Day when the time comes. He's got some sort of highfalutin, fancy schmancy HD video camera. So hopefully I won't pile drive it into the ground that day! That would be embarrassing!

Thanks for the kind words!

No clear coat yet Tim. Ran out of painting weather! Going to have to wait until Spring time.

Right now the UFO is sitting patiently waiting for it's final coat. In the mean time I'm busy catching up on some things that I've neglected during this build.

I bought a used furnace for the garage. Its a 125,000 btu Carrier that is not a high efficiency design. I paid 100$ for it hooked up a gas line and in ten minutes the garage is 70 degrees. I usually turn it on get everything ready and then turn it off while I paint. Then I open the doors and let the fumes out and when its all clear shut the doors and turn it back on while the paint cures. (If Wifey isn't home sometimes I just run the stuff in the basement after the initial cure. )
I've been for following your build and you truly are a master craftsmen. Its not many guys that can do it all from cutting ,carving, painting and rigging that do it as well as you have sir and my hat is off to you.
I hope you do another build for us and once again AWESOME Just AWESOME!!

I think RG should just go rent a heated spray booth for a few hours. It's like watching you favorite show and then having to wait all summer to see what happens next.

Nothing wrong with plastic pin striping. As long as it is shot first with a coat of clear and allowed to kick off for a couple hours before shooting the rest of the plane, it ain't coming off.

There's also a lot to be said for the simpler paint lines and schemes we used to put on pattern planes. They were easier to see and far less complicated to actually paint.

Paint schemes nowadays require a computer and a plotter to get accuracy...buh humbug!!

Thanks Gene!

Yeah, acrylic lacquer is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. It's so easy to work with!

RG

First off let me say that I've spent much of the last 2 days reading through this entire 30-page thread. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail is amazing, Ralph. I've never had that sort of patience. This UFO is absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I'm the type of guy who wants his pattern planes to be very presentable, but don't have the time or desire to have them be museum quality. That means a painted glass fuselage and MonoKoted stab, rudder, and wing.

I respectfully have to disagree with you on the acryic lacquer, Ralph. I painted ONE pattern plane fuselage with acrylic lacquer. It was without doubt absolutely the WORSE EXPERIENCE of my admittedly limited painting career. Lacquer has absolutely NO filling properties which can be a problem for those of us who aren't as skilled or patient as you in the prep department. It also requires MULTIPLE COATS to achieve a nice even color. Not my cup of tea!

Soon after that debacle, a friend who owns a body shop turned me on to automotive base coat/clear coat paint. The base coat is a 1-part paint - no catalyst is used. It covers well and dries very quickly allowing me to get a lot done in a short period of time. Following the normal prep, priming and sanding, this allowed me to apply two coats - a mist coat for adhesion and a final full coat - of each color, unmask almost as soon as I finished cleaning up the spray gun, feather in the hard edge with 400 wet & dry, remask and repeat for the other two colors - all in one morning. I allowed it to dry for the entire afternoon and sprayed on the catalyzed urethane clear coat the same evening. This gave the most beautiful shine you ever saw and it was tough as nails and absolutely fuel proof. I only wish I had a picture online to show you but I'm afraid I don't.

I needed to match three colors of MonoKote, so I took the MonoKote to my local PPG auto paint dealer. He scanned it and mixed up the most beautifully matching paint you could imagine. It's not inexpensive but it's definitely worth trying IMHO.

Jim
