Normally I travel most of the country attending and covering events, but this weekend I got to cover one in my back yard. For the 6th year Warbirds Over Oklahoma has given the opportunity for those in the southwest part of the country to come together and show off their warbirds. Since I was only about an our away I jumped at the chance to come and show off the warbirds!!!

The biggest problem was the weather. With the outlook of pouring rain for the weekend everyone worried that we would be able to fly. Friday the rain held off, but was very cool with temps not even getting out of the 50's. But that didn't stop those on hand from flying. And Saturday looked even bleaker as the day started with fog and mist reducing visibility to less than a quarter of a mile. But..... later in the morning that burned off and it turned into a very nice day. Ohhh, and how the warbirds flew!!!!!

Here are some pics from the action here!!!!

Keep those pictures coming, trying to spot the Lubbock boys airplanes. I so wanted to be able to visit this event this years, but things did not work out for me.

Made the 8 hour drive to WBOK from Houston and was really worth the trip. Steve and crew did an exellent job of running the show as it didn't look like much was going to happen when I arrived a rainy Friday AM. Around 11:30 AM the first flights were made and the confidence and spirit rose from there. Many, many sorties were flown including three of my own. Despite the damp and brisk winds, nobody gave up! Saturday AM was calm and foggy, causing a later than planned start. Visibilty improved very slowly during the morning but that didn't stop the WW1 and electric planes from flying. The flightline crew did an exellent job of keeping the pilots and spotters organized. By 11:00 the fog had lifted and the show was in full steam. Warbirds of all kinds and eras were flying. I especially enjoyed flying one of the WW1 and WW2 large gaggle flight sessions that were put on during the afternoon, thanks to 2.4 gh radios only. A beautiful full scale DC3 did arrive for all to climb aboard and see. The local advertising for the event was apparent as the spectator area and bleachers were full most of the day. All in all it was a most enjoyable fly-in for me and my wife as I was able to put a total of 11 sorties on my five planes I and did not damage any of them. That is a rarity for me! I saw a lot of old friends and met some new ones. Congrats to G-Pete on winning the "Best of Show" award with his P-38. Good job ! My hats off the the WBOK crew as it was very well done and hope to see ya'll again next year ! Paul

While many left yesterday or early this morning, some stuck around to fly again on Sunday. Those that stuck around were treated to the best day of flying of the weekend. Although the sky was a bright shade of blue that we haven't seen in awhile, and there was a strange bright orb in the sky that had many baffled.

With Warbirds Over Oklahoma 2010 in the books it was definitely a winner, even with the rainy weather. For those that attended they know what I mean as all had a great time flying. And for those that didn't make it, or didn't know about the event, I highly encourage you to come on out next year as it will most definitely be even better than this year.

Keep an eye out for a full coverage article in the RCU Magazine. I'll post a link here when it's up.

Ditto on everything that Paul stated above. What a fantastic weekend of flying. The El Reno airport was an excellent location and the Warbirds over Olkahoma Crew did an awesome job. A big thank you to Bill Holland and crew for the superb control of the airspace and flight line.
A definite repeat to attend in 2011.

Double ditto's on all the positives.

Glad everyone enjoyed N34, the DC-3 being there, the crew had a lot of fun.

My only disappoinement TWO green model 1/4 tigermoths there the one pictured above, and mine, and no pictures of mine!

Saddly the LAST flight of the event was a 1/6 scale stuka, It broke in two at the cockpit/firewall on a firm landing around 2:15.

Hope everone in OKC survived the hail storm!

Had a great time.

Could not believe the great turnout for the weather. Those who did make it had some very rare Oklahoma weather to fly in, cool with no wind in may.

Bill and Steve did a great job of putting this together.

See you guys next year.

Hi again, everyone!

This was my first big event that I actually got to fly in and man, I flew a LOT!!! All in all, I had an absolute BLAST! I know I can speak for the rest of the Lubbock, Texas boys when I say this was a first class event run by some first class folks. Maybe this Red Raider has some good things to say about Oklahoma after all!

Bill, you and your lovely wife, Sharon couldn't have been more gracious hosts for Les, Tom, Doug, David and me. A special thanks to the two of you and your outstanding support staff for a wonderful weekend. You truly are, "The Man!" You have set the standard for what an R/C airboss is all about. Fantastic job!

Steve, your vision for a terrific event is spot on! You added some great side events and participation for the community and local youth that seemed to go over with success. Kudos to all of your support staff for an organized, clean, well planned event! Even though we were originally concerned about the weather, the good Lord was on our side and kept the worst weather to the east of us. Steve, PLEASE consider moving this event back a little later in the year. I understand your passion for keeping it connected to Armed Forced Day, but lets find another military/memorial holiday to celebrate and honor. Many that I talked to would be in favor of it and think it would reduce the chances for adverse weather in that area ensuring an even better turnout.

Please keep in mind that WEST TEXAS WARBIRDS is coming up August 6th, 7th and 8th at the Abernathy Aerodrome hosted by the Wings Miniature Aicraft Society of Lubbock, Texas! Girls, you will see many handsome guys like the ones in the picture below!
Keep an eye out for more information here on RCU and the Wings Miniature Aircraft Society website at www.wingsmas.org.

A special thank you to RC Ken for an outstanding job with the camera! I couldn't imagine a harder working coverage man. By the way, Ken, I love the pics you took of my H&M Performance Spitfire! Tally Ho!

Ken:

I don't know about the RCU Magazine. Could you post some info about it, where to find it, and approximately when it should be available to see?

Thank you, sir!

Bryan,
The RCU Magazine is where all of our coverage articles are posted. You can find it http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine.

I'll get the article out as quickly as I can, but I have two others in line in front of it (SEFF and Top Gun). Like I said, I'll post a link in here when the article is up

Hi G Pete. Tom Wagner here from Lubbock, Tx. It was good to see you again at Oklahoma. In case you hadn't heard, you won best WWII and best of show awards for the P38. You've got some awesome planes. We hope to see you in Lubbock on August 6-8th for our Warbirds event. I thought you lived in Austin since I saw you there last month and 2 years before that. But since you live in Dallas you're only 4 hours from us. Us guys from Lubbock had a great time in Oklahoma, overcast skies not withstanding.

Yeah Tom, was good to see you too.
Terry informed me as I was on my way home about the trophies - nice surprise . I told my wife I would be home Saturday night we had the grand kids over...don't want to miss out the Sunday with them.

It is more like an 7hr drive from Allen to Lubbock TX Anywho put me on the list to expect. I saw some pictures from last year and I saw Cowman and the Stuka crew and some other guys who I know.
C-ya then.

Hi again Pete. I'm happy to hear that you're going to come. Yes, we have Jimmy Cowman and his crew chief David every year at our warbirds. He does his RC shopping in Lubbock since there is no hobby shop in Clovis New Mexico. Our event is kind of a "warm up" for him before going to Warbirds over the Rockies. I had time set aside for that this year but it seems they moved the event from the last weekend in August to some time in September. Oh well. You can't win 'em all. I'll let the guys know to expect you. The crew from Oklahoma will be with us again this year with maybe a few more pilots. We're hoping to hit the 50 pilot mark this year, so if there is someone from Allen intrepid enough to make the trip with you bring him or her along. How about the wife and kids? Are they game for something like that? If you have grand kids I guess your kids aren't really kids anymore are they? Oh well. As we get closer to the date if you need to reach me my cell is (806) 777-1598 and e-mail is flyboywagner@yahoo.com. See ya soon.

Nice thread I just discovered it tonight, been a little busy this week and have not had time to get on RCU like normal.

I was so pleased with the event this year!! As mentioned the weather looked as though the event may have been rained out, but things turned out really well. I really enjoyed meeting new faces, including the Legendary RCKen and the Lubbock crew who were all spectacular guys and many others I can't even remember at the moment. I really have to hand it to Steve and Bill they did a great job organizing this event and I think did a lot to promote our hobby to the local community. I can't wait till next year hopefully the weather will be a little more suitable.

Lubbock guys......Speaking of up coming events I hope to be able to make it down to Lubbock this year with Bill seems like you guys are going to have a really decent show this year and I can't wait to be a part of it I'm trying to clear my calendar now.

RCKen... great shots I can't wait to see the video that you come up with.
