Well I couldn't ask for a nicer day and after getting the engine finally running well, it was time to take that dredded first flight.
So I ran it down the runway pulled back on the stick.....pulled back...hmm......pulled even further and it finally broke ground. At lift off it wanted to drastically roll right and I had to give it lots of up to try and keep it level. I had a helper and told him to give it lots of up trim and lots of left. After a few very hair raising minutes I finally regained control and got it reasonably trimmed out. I made several high altitude circuts for about 5 minutes and figured it was time to land. I've flown jets before so I knew what to expect but each plane is always different. As expected, with a little throttle, it did come down nice and easy.
I re-adjusted the elevator for a more even flight and the next flight was much better.
After the 3rd flight I was starting to have fun with it and I made a total of 5 flights today with only 1 dead stick.

So what have I learned about this plane:
- it's not quite as fast as I had hoped but it still looks very good on high speed low flyby, especially when I make a turn away from the crowd and the bird on the underside shines bright (I'll get some pics). My YS 45 is turning 15,000 with 10x6 master airscrew, 10%/20% Byron fuel. Perhaps I'll try a 10x7 and get a little more speed out of it. (what does everyone else use?)
- I used a normal strut for the gear and will have to replace with a HD set. Going down the runway seems to make the gear spread a little and when it's retracted it doesn't come up sometimes.
- on the second landing I ended up taking that flimsy tail skid off, so I'll have to put a block in their and CF it to the block.
- the gear doors don't want to close all the way so as suggested by another club member, I'll try installing some sort of elastic in there to pull it the rest of the way shut.

So after I was getting use to it how did it fly, not bad at all. In the thunderbirds scheme it flew very scale like and the bird on the bottom looks awesome. I just need to practice a few tbirds manouvers and eventually put together some kind of show.

This plane has a few quirks that need to be worked out but all in all I think it'll be a fun little plane.

I'll post a few more pics soon.

She is a beauty....

I always run 20/20 in my YS-45 (Powermaster or??) the extra % will help give some oomph!

Also, try a 10x7 and even a 10x8 on the YS- It can handle it

How far was the takeoff roll? Is the CG pretty much right on?

That thing is great looking!

Roll out was about 150-175' and so far the cg seems close. Inverted doesn't require much down pressure and I did add 1 oz to get it to where it is supose to be.
So you think if I went up to 20% nitro and changed the prop it'll do a lot better?

Thanks.

I agree. I had one some time ago and used 20% nitro (didn't have powermaster though) and 10X8 APC. It worked well.

Good luck and congratulations,
Edgar

that is the best looking cbm f16 i have seen yet. i gave mine up. mine is just hanging in the garage. mine could never get off our grass runway. i kinda miss it but i don;t miss the problems.
i guess my ol patriot will have to fill my need for speed. i wish someone made a scale f16 in the size of the patriot besides the cermark. even if the engine was on the front. i have been contemplating converting my cbm f16 to a tractor prop. throw the engine on the nose. i have already carved out a hatch in the back for the electronics.

hey everyone, I have the same setup. Please answere me a few questions, I bought mine used and I flew it off of grass, 3 flights and the gear are totally trash now. What set of gear would be recommended for heavy duty use? And how much play does everyone have in there elevators? My 2nd and third flights I could not get the plane to trim out, and I thought it may have been the play in the horizontals, then again the gear doors were not closing all of the way so maybe they were flapping and causing some control problems for me??? not sure but if some one could tell me how much there elevators move with the radio off I would apreciate it.

Thanks

Michael

Goggles, did you use the recomended C.G. point with the wheels down as in the video? I'm ready to paint, just trying to decide on the scheme. Had to remove the front oleo strut and go with the stock wire as the gear door string would twist the wheel sideways and keep the door from shutting. I tried to use rubber bands on the mains and the doors really close well, but you must be carefull that you don't put to much tension on them as they tend to hang up the doors when comming down. I finally went back to string for reliability. The best way would to have use door air cylinders. My Y.S.45 with a tuned pipe tachs at 16400. using YS20/20

the cg required is 5 5/8" back from where the wing starts (not LEX) and I placed mine at 5 1/2" with 1 oz in the nose just to make sure. Inverted required some down push so I'm going to take out 1/2 oz and check it. I'm sure I can take the entire oz out but I'll do a little at a time.

For the nose gear catching the string and turning the wheel, I had that also but I found when I moved the steering arm closer to the servo so the arm was just less than 90* to the strut that would keep it straighter.

I also had problems with the little .....hmmm....how do you explain it......rods you make with the aero tube. After the first flight the connectors pulled out of the aero tube. Not wanting to have them pull out and have it hang up the doors some how I cut them off. I thought they were there just for show but I realized they actually do some good, they keep the gear from bending back to far. So today I made some new ones.....ones that won't pull out. I need to make one for the other side so I could take pictures of how I made them if any one is interested.

I used brass channel, attached it to the plastic guides with a bolt. It's not pulling out. I then mounted a pen spring to the middle hinge to make sure it pulls it toward the retract unit. So far all the up and downs have been uneventfull.

Another thing I messed up on was the shock. Thinking again it was just for show I didn't fill the middle with the tire as suggested (ma bad ). I quickly realized it actually helps keep the struts from spreading, so down to the home depot I go and bought some springs. It's just a matter of figuring out how many to put in it. Too many, too strong and it binds. I have 6" of springs in it now and I'll see how well that works on the next day out.

I get about 1/16-1/8" play in each direction.

Not sure if air cylinders for the door's is the best way or not. The CBM F-16 is obviously going to perform best when kept light as possible.... but from a reliability standpoint, they are probably the best way to go.

I opted to go the air cylinder route.... attached are a few pics. I started this project several year's ago, but never got around to finishing it. After seeing Goggles, I may dust it off & get fired up on it again.... but don't hold your breath.

Nice job Googles!!! By the way, how did the "Deadstick" go?

Goggles,

Make sure your springs produce the correct pressure when compressed as shown in the plans. I put springs in mine but I didn't have enough pressure when the plane landed and It would always nick the prop no matter how easy I touched down.

NXS I'm not sure how much spring to put into it. I tried 4 - 2" springs and it was too much and the gear was very slow or wouldn't work at all. So I put 3 in there and it has a little bit but I'm thinking not enough. I might cut one in half and put the 1" section in it.
On the second flight I broke the prop strike wire off the back but I made 3 more flights after that. I just had to take off nice and easy and land in the grass.

JOHN No video. Sorry man, I sure would have liked to have one.

Countryboy Dead stick turned out all right. I was trying to land and one gear got stuck so I was doing laps trying to get the gear to come down when it eventually ran out of fuel. I dropped the nose and headed for tall grass and when I got close I dropped the flaps and it slowed down an increadible amount that it looked like it was just floating...then it dropped into the grass. scratched the paint up and took off one of the missile rails but that was all.

Hello

That is a great job!
I just bought this kit from a guy in Georgia.
I hope that I can get mine to look half as good!
I hate to trouble you, but my kit did not come
with the instructional video.
I cannot get in touch with CBM, I've emailed and
called them, and still I get no reply.
Would you still have yours, and if so could I have it,
make a copy of it.
I really need it to continue building this kit.

Thanks

David

That was incredible. I have an old Y/A F-16A kit I am converting to a pusher like the CBM F-16N. I plan on getting a YS 45RE. Which version do you have? If you have the rear exhaust, which tuned pipe are you using? Also, which prop are you using?

Thanks, and good luck with that plane.

Tim

Thanks for the compliment and John did a good job of capturing it. (feel better now )
