Hans,

I am in the process of searching for a substitute for coroplast at this time. If you can get the 500 x 300 mm coroplast and it is of the 4 mm thickness, you may still be able to use it. The 500 x 300 mm would be about the same as a 20 x 12 inch when converted. If the corrugations run the length of the 20 inch piece you can simply use two pieces ganged together to give you a 20 x 20 inch PBF / Stamp. Where the two pieces join place wide clear packing tape on both sides and you are in business. If the corrugations run the length of the 300 mm piece it will not be strong enough.

To Hans Insulander,
I realize you are in Sweden, but perhaps you can still purchase coroplast from a well reknowned supplier here in the US. Contact Harbor Sales. Their website address is: www.harborsales.net I have purchased both 2mil and 4mil from them in several colors. They will cut the coro to dimensions no larger than 2 x 4 ft and ship to US customers for very reasonable prices. Be sure they know what direction you want the coro flutes to run. Good luck.

Not sure if anyone else had posted a new way of sticking things to coropast, but as I have learned in making Gutter spout SPAD planes here in Texas, DAP contact cement is EXCELLENT. My only experience with contact cement was in grade school and we would smear it all over our desks, let it dry then roll it all up into a realy nasty looking ball! LOL

BUT....the cement holds perfectly with coroplast. Incase you have not actually 'worked' with contact cement remember that to use it you must brush on C.C. to both pieces or sides, let dry for 10-15 mins, then just push and hold together by hand for about 10 seconds and then VIOLA! an instant bond.

Rules for product selection.... I prefer DAP(Weldwood) brand and make sure that you get the FLAMMABLE kind! They make a non-flammable kind that does not have the same effect on coroplast (weaker bond).

Hope this helps someone.

To Hans Insulander-

Just a thought but you might try using 3 mm mahogany plywood door skin material instead of the plastic. I think it would be a tiny bit heavier and you'd have to hinge the controls yourself and finish it with something fuel proof but on the positive side you could use regular wood glue.

The 3 mm pressed paper material similar to pegboard but without the holes would probably work too but it's a little heavier than either the plastic or the mahogany.

OR, you could use regular corrugated cardboard and some finishing varnish.

Check with the larger appliance dealers. Boxes for fridges and stuff often is double thick and it's VERY stiff. Make it up so the wing screws onto a gear subframe and you can just replace the cardboard when it gets "soft" from the hard landings.

Completed and flew my PBF Sunday - loads of fun! Used an OS 25 FSR, plenty of power - when the fuel got low (and I had graduated to a 9.5x6) the speed started to pick up and some flutter set in - for sure on the rudder, maybe on elevons as well - not sure, but I kept the speed down. I will add either wheels or a skid - probably a skid to aid in hand lauhcning.

First launch was a disaster - I tried launching as I saw Dave do in one of the videos - hold it up at a steep angle, full power and let go - it sort of fell forward, never gained airspeed and broke prop #1. Second launch was a more conventional hand launch and was sucsessful - got it more or less trimmed and was exporing low speed environment, stalled out at about 10' and broke prop #2 - still grinning ear to ear. Lots of suggestions from my buddies as to what to do with decorations and such - I brought 2 "semi-kits" to give away, just the 24" square and a piece for the rudder, plus a piece of pine for the spine. We'll see what transpires.

Those of you doing streamer combat - where are you attaching the streamers?

Thanks to Dave McD and all the others who developed the PBF!

Jeff

Jeff-

When I fly combat, (with myself or others!) I usually tie the streamer on the bottom through one of the ZipTies that I used to secure all my hardware to the plane. I thought about putting alittle eye screw through the pine as a place to secure a streamer, but tieing it to the straps worked so well that I never got around to it! You may want to experiment with towing a banner or something tied to an eye hook!

Jeff,
Congratulations on your new PBF!

I think you will enjoy flying it even more if you try a 9x4 or a 9.5x4 prop. This will give you better static thrust, and make it much easier to accurately control the amount of thrust with the throttle. It will also make it easier to handlaunch.

To handlaunch your PBF like in the videos, hold the PBF up at about a 45 degree angle. Adjust the throttle setting so it barely holds it's own weight, then gently push the PBF forward. Even with a 25, you'll only need about 2/3 throttle to do this. None of the launches you saw in the videos were done at full throttle......not even the launches out of the chair. The Norvel 25 powered PBF lifted out of the chair at a little over 1/2 throttle, with a 9x4 prop.

To attach a combat streamer to a PBF, follow JR's advice about tying it to a zip tie that's closest to the CG. That way the streamer won't have as much effect on the maneuverability of the PBF, and you can get more kills!

What is the smallest Pizza Box Flyer and what was it powered by, that has been posted here? Just finished a "mini" or "personal pan" sized. Its 16"X 16" powered by a Norvel .074 and micro gear, weighs in at 15 oz. First flight this weekend. I sent Dave McD. site out to the local club members and have started something. There are three more being built. Thanks Dave.

Fly SMALL, Have A Ball,

Frank

Thanks Tattoo!
I was looking for that exact same post, but couldn't find it.

That little 8x8 PBF sort of makes a 16x16 seem like a giant scale PBF.

Flew my new pizza box today... It's 24 x 24 and uses the Dave McDonnald spine and rudder attachment methods..... came out to 2lbs 3 oz.... I set the CG waaaaay back at 6" Boy was that a handfull... definately too far back... put a heavier battery up front and it balanced at 5 3/4"... much better.... Flew pretty good... I was doing tail touches on the second flight

I've got an old os 25 f cast iron piston jobby with a mousse can... boy is this engine tired..... It has a crappy air blead carb on it too.... I might have to break out that os 32.... or something.....

Hi ...
I saw all threads about PBF yesterday , I have no any coroplast , but i have some 1/4" carbon tube , My idea is to build a square frame with 4 carbon tube , and 2 for spine . then cover all of them . Is my idea correct and if this PBF will fly ? My estimation for weight is about 7 oz. and that it will be very stiff .
Thanks
