Well, I almost made it through the day without breaking a prop. still flying kinda high....... don't wanna have to restart all the time, even if it is a tough ol' bird.

Finally found that sweet spot for the high alpha hovering. Wheee. After that I was "walking" figure eights. pretty kool.

On my last flight of the day, I went into another inverted spin ( as usual ), got out if it, got into another spin, didn't get out of that one................. realised it was too dark to fly anymore. So I finally break a prop. Spinner too.

I'm starting to think Spinners are a waste of time. so no spinners for now.

I DID learn someting about engines. During these High Alpha flights, the engine was running hot. So I richen the mixture about a 1/4 turn. Voila, no more unexplained glide practise.

Did a great toliet bowl today, after I maxed out the rudder. Thanks to whomever that suggested that.

FYI Elevons are +/- 2 inches. Rudder is also +/- 2 inches. using an old OS40FP. oodles of power.

Cool! Sounds like you had fun. I gotta get mine out again and do some low flying. I've broken at least two spinners and am not going to buy any more. Once the feel of the PBF just 'clicks' the fun really starts!

I am going to build my first PBF I have a norvel .15 I'm going to use on it. What would be the optimum size for the PBF for a .15.

The father of the PBF, Bob McD.,s original was 24" X 24" and ended up being powered by a TT 42. Mine is 18" X 18" and powered by a Norvel .074, which has more than enough power. I added landing gear using 1/8" music wire and Sullivan 1 3/4" lite wheels. Also, I pounded a 1/8" fibre glass rod into the first flute at the leading edge. This has really helped in the breaking of props and one point landing departments!

For a 15 sized I would go with about 22" X 22".

Although I never got around to completing it, I was going to reduce the PBF down to 18"x18" for my HB .15.......which ironically is the engine that I started out with on the original 24x24 PBF.

We here in California have just added a new dimension to PBF flying.
Last weekend, at the local flying field, about nine guys with pbf's put ten feet of crepe (if that's how you spell it) paper on our pbf's and got in the air and started combat. Talk about fun One guy had less than an inch of crepe paper left after he landed. Has anyone tried anything like this?

Nice action photos, tatoo. How close do you guys fly while doing combat?
Here for the damage report from this session.
1. One PBF slightly damaged by a landing gear of the other
2. A battery on a PBF flew away
The lesson learned: use zipties to secure the battery, never use just velcro

Yep, PBF combat with streamers is a blast!

But if you want a real challenge, try P.B.F. with PBFs. IMHO, Prop Blast Fighting is even more fun than streamer combat. The goal is to maneuver your PBF so that your prop blast knocks the other guy out of the sky. It's a lot harder than it sounds, and it's good for hours and hours of pure fun.

There are some links to some videos of my PBF getting prop blasted by my buddy Tim's PBF on my PBF web page at:

Oh, shut up smart @### Yah, my battery is taking sunbath somewhere in the weeds. My nice PBF Extra Topping has retired. Chopped elevon (I don't think it was a landing gear, it looks more like a prop strike), every zip-tie is broken (can you believe that ), shattered ball bearings in my old COMO 40, and LG twisted like a question mark.
But not to worry - it's just a cheap piece of plastic. It will be ready for the next combat session in no time. And, yes, I will use a zip-tie on the battery

Yeh, I agree with Dave on Prop Blast Fighting. during High ALpha flight........... you get a blast from someone and you are GONE!!!! and if you are low enough, its not recoverable !!!
