Well I maiden flight my Blue Nose H9 P51 this afternoon and it flew great. Motor is still rich but good power and I love these motors on H9 warbirds! Landing was sweet with half flaps, full flaps with down elevator mixed in was to much. I need to put in about half the down at full flap and it will be good to go. Can't wait to get back out there with it on Sunday and rip up the sky again.

Nudge, I am quite sure most people want to do it the way you did it.

It will then be more nose-heavy when wheels down.

You don't balance with the wheels down because that isn't the way you fly. Nothing wrong with a warbird being a tad nose heavy coming in for a landing

Interesting to see you had to grind the bottom of the leg away. I gather it hit the doors?

Always balance a model with the wheels in the rearmost position - in this case up. If the wheels rotated back for landing (like an A10) then you would balance with them down.

Yes stoat
to keep the curvature of the doors to a minium the bottom legs were filed down, but theres plenty of meat on them. The real legs allso had angle on them to get inside the doors.

Hi
Maybe of some help to you out their who want to mount the front gear doors. The items in the kit dont work and best in the bin.The arms were cut from ali sheet and 2mm screws were tapped into the side of the leg.The job takes a bit of faffing around but worth the look when coming in for that landing with ]everything hanging out

cheers Nudge

VERY NICE pic's Nudger!!!

Fantastic how nice that plane looks in the air. And on the ground too, for that matter.

And the door-solution is excellent. Makes me reconsider my own solution.

Been to the UK a few times, and that blue sky , no, havent seen it before.

hehe.

You have replaced the girl in pink dress with Jolly Roger?

Great pics. Just needs a dummy radial and it will be the perfect model! Need to get mine finished... just keep getting sidetracked on other projects.

Your photographer did a bang up job on the photos,  I am impressed.  You are a good modeler Nudger,  I keep reminding myself it takes patience....... I am a pilot, I don't like to build so the fastest way into the air I naturally follow.  The Saito 450 install was reengineering at best.  The details however, make a huge difference in the final copy of the plane...  I love this airplane too, the radial, the three bladed prop, the sound,...... you have inspired me to get it back on the bench now and finish detailing it.

On the doors for the tailwheel, did you also use one servo for each side?  That would make 6 servos in all to operate your doors.  How did you then hook them up, it sounds like a Y-harness nightmare...

Thanks for the kind words MagnumRc
Just love the sound of your 450,well worth going for the collector ring makes all the difference As for patience you do need plenty of it in this hobby to sort out all the problems you encounter.Thats why I like to share how Ive over come these to give other modelers a quicker way of getting what they would like out of their models.

As you can see from pics no sevos just 2mm threaded rod and ball joints, very simple and works.A small piece of hardwood glued and screwed into the fork of the tailwheel, then some trial and error getting angles right.Like you said its all the small details that add up to make the final copy..but its worth it.

Stoat... Ill get right on it

Cheers Nudge

Nudge, looking in your tailwheel bay I see you retained the stock pull pull rudder actuation system. I take it you had no rudder flutter issues during your flights? I did a gound run on mine and the flutter I saw was enough to convince me to scrap the stock set up and go with a conventional external linkage.

Next item, my Corsair is on CG with the wheels up and now weighs 36.5 POUNDS dry! The fuselage is 22.5 lb and the wing is 14 lb. My build data: Wing is stock with the addition of a servo in each wheel bay to lock the gear up (ok, that's aft of the CG). Fuselage; I cast the dummy radial with resin, have a DA-50 with a Slimline wrap-around muffler, scrapped goofy engine mount tube thing and replaced with own wood set up (see early post), ignition box above the engine, three 3000 mAh NiMh batteries immediately behind the firewall, stock radio installation, air tanks on CG, full cockpit (Ty's) and Best Pilot figure (aft of CG of course). So my only aft CG deviations from stock are the 2 servos in the main wheel bays and the cockpit kit/pilot. The engine mount modification is a toss up weight-wise. I poured 4 lb of metal powder/resin mix around the firewall to arrive at the proper CG point! Yours flies fine at 32 lb and I'm sure mine will do the same at 36 with very carefull energy management and carefull attention to landing gear stress. Hopefully I'm dead wrong, but I do not think the Chinatracks from ESM will hold up. Luckily we fly from pavement and there is 600 ft of it. I will report on how it goes.

Detailing tip, I hit the entire model with 000 steel wool and it resulted in a perfect Pacific Theatre weathering effect. The blue Chinapaint is very thin on the fuselage so as the steel wool started to wear through in areas the white undercoat just started to show giving a very realistic sun-weathered effect.

Thanks
