I am looking for a kit or good set of plans for the Hawker Fury, Hind, Demon, Nimrod series of biplanes. I would be happy building any of the planes in 1/5 scale. Any ideas on where to find a kit or good quality plans?

Try the Dennis Bryant plan of the Fury, 1/6 scale. through Bob Holman. Very high quality and I suspect easily blown up to 1/5. I think Traplet have a similar plan.

I have a set of Fury plans. I'm never going to get around to build it as my interests have changed. PM me if you're interested. I can't recall whose they are, but remember that they are very detailed. Wingspan was 60+ inches.

Hi Tom,

I have seen the Hind that you built... very clean looking plane. How does she fly?

I was fixing to say "I've seen your Hind" but that sounds kinda wrong.

Stunning model, tom! I wouldn't have had the heart to remove the engine!

Tom,
I am inspired by your work on the Hind. What was the flying weight of the model?

I just purchased a set of plans from AMA plans service for a 1/5 scale Fury. They were drawn by Dennis Bryant Elite plans. I hope they produce a good flying plane. I will probably have to make a built up cowl... or perhaps this is the time for trying to make my own plug and mold.

Every scale model presents its own particular challenges and on the Hinds the challenge (i.e. "the fun") would be in doing the metal panels on the forward fuselage. For me, this would be one of the prime attractions of the entire build. Tom, how did you do the panels on yours. They look like metal. Were they? Or did you, in the finest tradition of scale modeling "fake it?"

Thank you for the compliment. As soon as budget allows, the Hind will get another engine.

The metal work is thin aluminum with fake riveting.

The Hind came out to be about 25lbs with a Saito 180 for power.

How did you make the thin aluminum run around the compound curves, especially on the cowl? Or did you do something different with the cowl?

the curvature of the cowl is not very compound and the aluminum was burnished on by panels

Tom: I built the Dennis Bryant Hawker Fury I and it flew well. The problem was with the aluminum cowling panels. On the full-size plane they were highly polished. I tried simulating them with silver-painted Solartex. No good. Then I tried chrome Monokote. No good. I am thinking of building the plane again but the aluminum panels will be the stumbling block. What sort of aluminum did you use? How thick? Where did you get it? How did you attach it to the balsa sheet underneath and (perhaps) to the fiberglass cowling? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Roger
aluminum sheats can be obtained from McMaster Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/#aluminum/=7nl53a hard surface, attaches well with spray adhesive however I would suggest using aluminum duct tape from hardware store....much easier to apply with self adhesive backing. I used the tape on the Baby Bullet with very good result.

Texan, do you have a membership yet on RC Scalebuilder?  http://www.rcscalebuilder.com

I ask because a fellow named Gwyn has a really terrific build thread underway there for a 1/4 scale Fury Mk I of his own design.

You can find it there under Scratch Builds.   Here's page one of Gwyn's thread:   http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12777&PN=0&TPN=1

Hi John,

I do have a membership with RCSB. I have seen the extreme scale work of Gwyn... master is not sufficient to describe his level of skill.

TX

By the way, I just received two sets of plans. A 1/5 scale Hawker Fury from Dennis Bryant (AMA plans service) and a 1/6 scale Hawker Hind from Nexus.

I received the Hawker Fury plan by Dennis Bryant from AMA plans service and it is not the listed 72" WS. The plan shows a 60"WS which is 1/6 scale. Other that that, the plan looks good... I suppose enlargement is my next step.

The Nexus plan for the Hind is 1/6 scale. I received the plans but they were missing 5 sheets. I am told the remainning sheets are on the way. We will see.
